Tamanyan is the most famous architect of Armenia. Under Soviet rule, he was responsible not only for the design of some iconic buildings, but sometimes the layout of whole cities - such as Gyumri and Stepanakert.
It is only fitting that he holds the place of honour in Cascade Gardens, where he is now competing with some weird and wonderful statues.

It is a huge statue that I first saw when I arrived at the Park located infront of the Cascade. In addition to this Statue, there are other statues at this park, a couple of them were created by Botanero, a Columbian sculptor. Also located near all these statues and sculptures are beautiful, flowering gardens.

On your way to Yerevan's awesome "Cascade Complex", a major statue will certainly call your attention. This is the "Alexander Tamanyan Statue", by sculptor Artashes Hovsepyan, inaugurated in 1974. Alexander Tamanyan was the most famous Russian-born Armenian architect, responsible for the first general plan for a modern Yerevan, back in 1924. After nearly a century, his firm imprints can still be seen in central Yerevan - wide avenues, ring roads and many parks. As an archictect, some of his works are todays Yerevan's landmarks, such as the "Republic Square" (including some of its main constructions - "Government Building", "Foreign Ministry", "Central Post Office" and "Marriott Hotel"), the "Armenian National Academic Theater and Opera named after Alexander Spendiaryan" and the iconic "Northern Avenue". The statue honors the memory of an architec ahead of his time and father of the modern neoclassical Armenian architecture! A few pictures and "Cafesjian Sculpture Garden" is just a step away! Enjoy!

Alexander Tamanyan is famous for being the urban planner of Yerevan City. His monument provides a fitting welcome to visitors coming to The Cascades, a major tourist attraction and city landmark.

The simple fact is, this is a statue in memory of an architect who laid the blue print of the capital city of Yerevan and whose original plans continue being adhered to almost a 100 years after he envisaged them. As a result, central Yerevan is such a wonderfully simple yet beautiful urban complex.

Not many cities boast a statue in memory of the architect who effectively designed the city. Yerevan does. But then, it is part of Armenian DNA to celebrate and commemorate contributors to the enrichment of this ancient culture above all others. Almost every street in Yerevan is named after a writer, a historian, a scientist, composer or painter. Every currency note bears the picture of a poet or writer. A statute to an architect is therefore unique, even in Yerevan.

Well worth a visit. It sits at the Cascade, a unique structure in its own right.

I love sculpture, and this one is grand and lovely. Great curved lines and beautiful stone. Great placement at the foot of the Cascade.

In the very heart of yerevan you can see the statue of its "father" great architector. Behind the statue is the art center of the city which perfectly complete the idea of how he wanted to see the city.

The statue is really artistic and nicely created. It is near the opera so you can plan visiting these together. In the same area there are other statues too.

The role of Alexander Tamanyan(1878-1936) in Yerevan, Gyumri, Stepanakert and other cities of Armenia’s architecture is very important.
His most famous designs in Yerevan are the Opera and Ballet house and the Republic Square. Also played a big role in the development of restoration of historical landmarks in the country.
More interesting is his statue, which is a really strong and heroic view of this great architect, just in the front of Cascade.
