Hue to Thuan An beach by private car
Thuan An village, about 13km from Hue, lies beside Hue’s only beach of note. It’s within easy reach – if you feel energetic, it’s a pleasant cycle ride. The road runs alongside the river past several interesting pagodas and commune houses, and a local market at No village. From there, you cross a bridge to the long sand spit and lagoon where the Perfume River finally enters the sea.
The signs will direct you to the busy part of the beach. Unless you want to eat in one of the many dozens of seafood restaurants, this area is best avoided. It’s very popular with Vietnamese people – on public holidays, in particular, a sizeable part of Hue’s population heads for Thuan An. The beach disappears under the seething mass of people, and the sea boils with flotillas of ‘swimmers’ buoyed up by inflated vehicle inner tubes. The sand is dirty, and there’s no shade apart from that offered by the restaurants.

Hue to DMZ 1 -Vinh Moc tunnel ( half day ) by private car + tour guide
The tunnels needed 5m-deep ventilation openings, and as the community within expanded, they had to develop wells, kitchens, bedrooms and health-stations. The tunnels also had to store provisions for the army and locals, and had to be able to house as well as transport hundreds of tonnes of rice. The tunnels are not just famous for the uniqueness of the constructors’ endeavor, but for the meticulous ingenuity of their design. All the kitchens required chimneys, which had to be able to disperse their smoke without attracting enemy planes, no easy feat for a designer who was trying to fight a war.
When the underground channels were designed, the designers had the foresight to consider their protection as well as their construction. They must be well against damage long, tropical rains, and monsoon. Architects would like to visit this historical and solid shelter to figure out how their elders could succeed in constructing such a complex, huge, but firm and sufficient place of living.

Hue transfer to Phong nha via DMZ area ( a day trip)by private car
The Vinh Moc Tunnels are located on the coast 37 kilometres north of Dong Ha. When the DMZ, the dividing line between North and South Vietnam, was created along the Ben Hai River, the village of Vinh Moc found itself at the precarious southern edge of Northern Vietnam.
Secretly built between 1966 to 1967, the red soil had to be dispersed under the cover of night to avoid detection by enemy surveillance. Three different levels were constructed – 12 metres, 15 metres and 23 metres deep – with 13 entrances/exits, including seven to the coast. Not only did this provide a breeze for ventilation, it was important for supply lines to the sea.

Happy Car Driver (Huy) was friendly and extremely safe driver. Vinh Moc was highlight of tour, along with Khe Sanh. It is a long day of driving (about 12 hours all up) and sights are few and far between. Some sobering places along the way.
