This place is a hidden gem and not many of the locals seem to know it. We paid a driver for the day to take us various places and he had to follow his sat nav! There seems to be regular tombs and temples in Hue on the tourist trail (some free/some not), but are always crowded. By comparison this beautiful site just outside the city costs a matter of pence to enter and is a beautiful haven of peace, tranquility and stunning architecture, pools and carvings. It is a huge site and you could spend hours there. Apart from the man at the gate I saw no one else there. How this is not more well known is amazing to me.

This was a spectacularly beautiful temple. I misread the map and thought our cabbie was taking us to the wrong location so be aware that this is an isolated spot pretty far from downtown Hue. However, this meant on a weekday afternoon in the fall we had the place to ourselves. It was peaceful and serene and I only wish we could have spent more time there.

We made a stop here while out visiting the tombs in the area. Unlike many of the other attractions around, we had the entire place to ourself here! We waked around most of the grounds, which were quite large. The walk up to bell was nice, although tough due to the humidity. My favorite area was this staircase with long dragon statues on both sides. The cicadas were so deafening loud we had to cover our ears during the walk up. Not sure how long cicada seasons lasts, but bringing earplugs might be a good idea, I am not joking.

This temple was not on the standard tour guide route so we needed to hire a car and driver (costs a little more but means we were not rushed in and out of sites by guides keeping to a schedule) to get there. The approach is through 100 acres of graveyard which is spectacular in itself.
The site is more a complex than a temple with stairs that ascend up into the hills. The dragon banister was one of the most spectacular we encountered across Vietnam.
It was a rainy day when we visited so we actually had the entire temple to ourselves. The other temples and tombs are often crowded around Hue. This one was silent which gave us a chance to contemplate (and meditate if so inclined) in peace and quiet.

We went here on a rainy day so we were the only people there. It's fairly cheap to get in, only 30.000 dong.
The area is beautiful with amazing stairs and a stone dragon running along the sides. Very impressive. Lots of green and a jungle feeling to it. Beautiful temples and decorations etc.
We walked up all the stairs to the peace bell which is well worth the effort.
However, beware that he stairs can get extremely slippery and dangerous. We were a little scared on the walk back down even tho we are experience hikers. Its just really steep slippery stairs with an incline which make you slip real easily. And there is nothing to hold on to.
So make sure to only go up there if you're confident that you can make it back down.
Recommend to go on a dry day but do go, it was a gorgeous experience. We liked it better than the tombs because it was so quiet. You only smell incense sticks and hear the birds. Plus you get to ring the peace bell on top of the mountain which was a magical moment.

We read the history of Huyen Tran princess on the internet. She was the later Queen paramecvariin of Champa during Tran dynasty In May 1307, Jaya Sinhavarman III died and the crown prince sent an ambassador to Dai Viet to offer white elephants as gifts and announced the death of his king. According to Cham tradition, all of the royal wives would be cremated with the dead king. King Tran Anh Tong ordered a general named Tran Khac Chung to go to Champa to officially attend the funeral but the real mission was for Tran Khac Chung to rescue Huyen Tran and take her back to Dai Viet by boat. The trip back took a year. Legends had it that Tran Khac Chung fell in love with Princess Huyen Tran and the two disappeared from sight together but there is no historical proof to back up this story
The temple has been well preserved.
Respect to her too much.

i don't know why this isn't more popular... many people were surprised i wanted to visit here. but if you're into architecture then this is a must see. i live in bangkok and so i've seen some stupendous temples, and i love them. maybe that's why i was so eager to see this one. don't get me wrong, i enjoyed king's tombs and i was impressed with angkor wat, but personally i like things that are very visually appealing, and this temple is just that.

We got a taxi from hue which dropped us at the gate. It was almost deserted except for a girl in the ticket office (30k each) and a couple of other staff in the extensive grounds. The gardens and buildings are attractively laid out and the temple was very beautiful and well looked after. It was a wet day and many of the paths were very slippery so we didn't go right up to the top to see the bell. The atmosphere of the whole place was very peaceful. We were wondering how easy it would be to get a taxi but no problem - the girl at the gate got one for us. Definitely worth a trip but try to choose a dry day! The approach road is very rural but goes through acres of cemeteries- some tombs looked very old. A fascinating afternoon trip.

This place is just amazing - if I were a princess I would definitely choose this place as summer-domicile!
If you love nature, silence, temples and history this is the PERFECT place to go!
It was a little hard to find it though, cause the address shown here was wrong (it's 151 Thiên Thai, Thủy An, Tp. Huế, Huế, Vietnam - where the Huyen Tran Cultural Centre is located - this institution is in fact the temple complex).
The entrance is 30.0000VDN and more than just worth it!
--> bring some water! ;)

I'll warn you, there are a million stairs. Your legs might fall off and you may have to pull yourself up by your arms. BUT!!! It will be worth it. The view from the peace bell is amazing and the dedication is absolutely beautiful. They have unkept this temple very well and the grounds are huge. Much to see.
