An imposing, but yet unimpressive attraction highlighted by a large Vietnamese flag. However, a good landmark for direction to the Citadel from a distance, worthy of a photo when the flag is blowing in the wind.
As far as the history, the Flag Tower Citadel was constructed in 1807 during Emperor Gia Long, the founder of the Nguyen dynasty, the last dynasty of Vietnam before being conquered by France.

Right in front of the "Imperial Citadel", a huge Vietnam's flag flies over Huê and its "Perfume River"! This is "The Flag Tower", a witness of Vietnam's recent history. The tower was originally built in 1807 and remodeled on several occasions as 1829, 1831, 1840, 1846, 1904, 1948 and 1995. It consists of three flat-top pyramids, each placed on the top of the other, in descending order. At the top pyramid, a 37m high steel-core flagpole was placed, bringing the total height of "The Flag Tower" to incredible 54,5 m! Along the years, all Vietnam's flags were raised here, from the Imperial one up to today's flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam! Unmissable! Enjoy!

The Flag Tower is a unique structure. As far as tourists are concerned it is nothing more than a photo opportunity, as you cannot go inside. To the locals it means probably much more. It was built at the start of the 19th century and has withstood time and become a symbol. It has always flown the flag of the rulers. Today the Vietnamese flag flies at the top of a very long pole and it is the centre of many significant and symbolic ceremonies.

There is an iconic war photo taken by AP during the Tet Offensive in 1968 of a tower with a South Vietnam flag on top of a tower at the end of the little bridge across the moat. Many people died here defending the Citadel. The flag tower is located just beside this little tower that has been refurbished today. The flag tower is a great defensive system that reminded me of Edinburgh Castle.

Very impressive flag tower during day outside of citadel. But the best part is at night every day at 19.30 the flag tower is illuminated with lights and the 4 cannons breath fire accompanied with music. It seems not a lot of people know about it but it is very much worth it just on a chilled evening

An area of the city steeped in ancient and modern history. The Vietnamese flag like a cherry on the top. It was tempting to hoist the marine corps globe and anchor on the flagpole, but I let it go.

Hovering over the Citadel, the flag tower dominates the skyline of Hue. It is located near the main citadel entrance.

The Flag Tower in Hue stands at 37 meters and is a major landmark in the Imperial City of Hue. From a distance you can see the Vietnamese flag flying proudly. A stage is usually built on this site during Hue Festivals so that some of the activities are available for easy viewing by spectators. It is located just opposite the main gate of the Imperial Citadel.
