About a 40 min scooter ride from Hue. Water buffalo soaking in the muddy water. Took an amazing boat with a fisher woman over the lagoon to see her fishing stake; she showed us her creels and emptied the catch. utterly beautiful. this was not an organised tour but we drove the the edge of the lagoon and were offered the trip

This was an absolute fantastic tour! Absolutely unexpected!
We had a fab tour guide named blue, he was great and showed us around local culture. We felt part of a family, if you’re visiting would definitely recommend for an unforgettable experience. ~ Jackson and Tiarne

I love Tam Giang lagoon, I love its beautiful landscape, poor but friendly local people,
I love the children here,
Tam Giang means Three river, if you are a backpacker with a scooter, you should driver in 49B national road to take a look to people life, they don't live at a house, they live in a boat,
The children here don't go to school, no candy, no books, nothing
You should visit Thanh Duyen pagoda which you can have an overview of Tam Giang lagoon

This is a great lagoon framed by the mountains on the west and a strip of land separating it from the ocean. It is surrounded by little villages of fishermen and farmers. There are many rice ponds and small fishing boats, eel traps, oysters bed. There are a few good restaurants around.

I was on a motorbike tour to tam giang lagoon. Upon reaching one part of the lagoon, I took a boat to a restaurant in the middle of the lagoon. Fresh seafood was served and the food was simple but delicious. I could relax or take a nap on the bamboo floor on the mats provided on the restaurant on stilts. I took a boat to go around the lagoon after that and the sunset was beautiful. I opted for homestay at a village at tam giang lagoon and I was given the option to go frog catching at night with the kids or wake up 3am to follow the fishermen out to sea. I was too tired so I opt that out and slept after late dinner to woke up 5am to visit the fish market. The sunrise was breath taking with beautiful changing colours in the sky and as the lagoon water is shallow, I could walk to the boats nearby which are coming in with fresh catch of the day. As I walked around, I could see prawns swimming in the water and clams hidden in the sand under my feet. The lagoon gets busier as the sun goes higher as more boats come back from the big boats further away and people started walking on the lagoon to the boats to buy seafood or fishermen were pulling their small boats or washing their nets around me. After the market, I visited a local village eating place for breakfast and had some noodles and coffee. It's really good. I could do some farming at the vegetable plot and go around the village on the motorbike in the afternoon. It's a good 2days away from the city and it's a good place for those who wanted to have a taste of the local village life. It's a beautiful place for those who are interested in photography too. It's been a good trip for me.

Best to get a local person to take you by car and help you choose a restaurant and boatman to take you there. Awesome Viet experience sitting eating, drinking Huda and generally enjoying life alongside great absolutely fresh seafood.

The sunrise is spectacular. Totally worth it.
As form of tip I will write what we did:
- We had a motorbike and had bought breakfast (2 kitkats/juice) the previous evening
- Sunrise would be at 5:30, so we got up at 4:00 and left about 4:15
- The drive to the southwest of the lagoon was quite difficult to navigate, even though we had a phone with databundle and gps. It's just so dark. Alleys are marked as intercity roads on googlemaps and vice versa. You drive slow and your speed is very variable making estimating covered distances difficult. We arrived at about 5:20 with the horizon glowing red already. I recommend getting up at 3 just to be sure and to also enjoy the black-to-red part
- Fun fact: I was expecting it to be completely deserted at 4am in the morning, but there was plenty of traffic along the way and even whole markets full of people trading.
- Bring glasses and a mask. The bugs are plentiful at those hours.
Location:
- Looking at googlemaps you can make out an unnamed 'village' at the middle-south of the lagoon
- On the westside there is a tiny road marked to go to the edge of the lake, giving you a long view to the east. This is where I was and probably the best location to be
- Plenty of activity going on while there. Fishing boats are out fishing and returning/coming from the village to your east. Giving you a vietnam view. We even had a local trader at our location who made deals with three boats that 'docked' there to sell fishes to him.
- Later we went to the village itself, where you can find a road to a small harbor of sorts, where those canoe style boats sometimes dock. With hand gestures we asked a local if he could take us on a short tour (15min) across the lake. He was happy to do so. After returning we tried to ask him how much he wanted for it. Confusion followed and we concluded he meant to gesture 'as much as you think is fair' and we gave him 100k. I expect 0k would also have been accepted, but hey.
- Note: The harbor Bến đò Cồn Tộc marked by googlemaps is much bigger but completely deserted. One of the failed government projects i guess. You need a road north inside the village.
All in all we were back at the hotel for a nap at around 9:00.

We visited this place in Jul 2014. One of the most favourite places in my 10 day trip.
We hired a motobike and drived to the lagoon after visiting Thanh Toan Bridge. It is not far from Hue city, road condition is ok but a little bit hot as it was summer.
We asked a local restaurant and they offer boat trip for guest who book meal with them. We had a nice lunch with excellent fresh and delicious seafood at a cheap price (we were really surprised as it is so cheap and so delicious). Then we had a cruise around and enjoy the landscape. Regret that I did not have much time to enjoy it much more. There are not many tourists. We only saw some locals.
I recommend to go there in the afternoon, so you can see the sunset while cruising.
Should not leave Hue without visiting this place.

We stopped by here on our driving transfer on the way to Hue. It's very pretty here, kind of reminded me a bit of Inle Lake in Myanmar. If you've never been to a fishing village like this before, or you just like fishing villages, this is a pretty and interesting place that is worth a visit.

I would like to go to the Lagoon for sunrise and to see fishermen in action. What's the cost of a cab if I had to go for an hour or so and the cab will wait for me and brings me back to the hotel? Thanks

There are various taxis in Hue, and it iss difficult to wave a taxi on the street. Therefore, normally, you have to call. The most popular ones are Mai Linh 054.3898989; Thanh Cong 054.3575757 or Hoang Sa 054.3757575. The prices for a small 4-seat taxi start from 10.000vnd per kilometer. You can ask someone who can speak Vietnamese to phone directly to the diretory enquiries about the route and the prices. Have a nice trip

Hi. I read many wonderful things about tam giang lagoon. was wondering how far is it if i cycle there from hue town? is it safe to cycle back at night after sunset?

Hi, it about 11 km from Hue city. You can get there by bicycle but it is not safe when comeback to city at night because the traffic is busy. My suggestion you to get there by car. after that take a boat to center of lagoon, relax in the local House (cho house), enjoy the local food and the romantic sunset.
total cost of them is 700 000 dong ( 32 USD)/ person. if 2 peoples group will cheaper.
Contract to me via phone number: +84 913 905 135 to book tour. (you pay when the tour finish).
Regards.

Hi,
It's about 15kms fron Hue downtown. It's a nice trip, but you need a half day.
Do it with huetourist, they have daily departure and you'll help the poor comunity on the lagoon.
Have nice trip.
