Interesting cooking class
Mar 2018 • Friends
We booked a cooking class with BA and it was interesting. We learnt to cook some dishes and taste so good. The host, she was lovely and patient. Now I know how to cook some Vietnamese food for my friends and my family. I will book their other activities when I come back to Vietnam next trip.

Amazing course ever !

I did a wood carving class with Mr Dinh and it was a highlight of my trip in Hue. Me Dinh is sooo friendly. He helped me with the wooden piece and turned it into a special souvenir for me to bring home. Would recommend this activity to anyone who loves craft and wants to experience a really off-beat thing.

Authentic Cooking Class

We have just come back from our cooking class with a lovely lady at her family home in Hue. She was a lovely host and although couldn't speak any English however fantastic translator Annie made the whole experience nice and easy. They were all so friendly and welcoming. We helped make pork and lemongrass, marinated grilled pork and pancakes. Annie translated the recipes and process perfectly and got us very involved. We then ate together in the home and was shown the Vietnamese way to eat. We learnt about their family and at times were joined by them too. The whole experience was very authentic and humbling. Overall great experience hosted by wonderful people!

Good courses, but could be better

I took a cooking class and hat making workshop in Hue. Both were interesting, and the ability to do the classes with local people was nice. Both were shorter than advertised - 2 hours not 3 and 4. The cooking was mostly just watching the process with a bit of helping (although there was a problem with the gas cooker was part of the cause)
The hat making was interesting, but it would have been much better to have been able to see the whole process. The class really only consisted of sewing a partially completed hat, I would have liked to have at least seen how the leaves etc are assembled on the frame, and how the sewing process is started. It would also have been nice to have been able to have the hat I worked on completed to take home, even if the sewing was not very neat.

Left high and dry with nothing to do in Hue.

We were all geared up to do the conical hat making workshop in Hue. We had signed in and organised a time and made a booking request. The backstreet academy site only allows you to book things one day in you cannot book on the day, this gives the person running the workshop a days advance notice. We recieved our confirmation of the request early in the morning, but heard nothing from the instructor via backstreet academy to cancel until 8:30pm at night. Far to late to rearrange any travel plans. We are SO dissapointed in the very late response. We now have one more day in Hue with nothing to do and no way to book another class on the day! VERY DISSAPOINTED!!!!!!!

Hi OS247, We're sorry to hear that you were disappointed during your stay in Hue, but to point the finger at us for this disappointment is not entirely fair. Hence, we would like to clarify a few things: 1. Most of our hosts generally require a 24 hour notice to be able to confirm a booking after ensuring availability (this is clearly stated on our FAQ page also). We received your booking on the 3rd of May 2pm (and not early in the morning as you claim) for the following day 4th May at 10am which is already a lesser lead time then what our hosts require; 2. On the very day that you sent the booking, we sent you a message at 7pm (and not 8:30pm as you claim) informing you that the host was not available on your preferred date, and asked you if there any alternative dates you could attend the activity. 3. By 9pm you had responded checking with us if the host was available on the 5th of May. After receiving your message we could only get in touch with the host the following morning and we responded the following morning at 8:40am letting you know the host was not available and asked if you would like to book other activities and suggested you to book our conical hat workshop in Hanoi if you were heading there. At this point our correspondence ceased and we did not hear back from you. While we recognize that our communication could have been faster and apologize for not being able to make this activity happen for you, but to fault our team for 'the very late response' and for being the reason for wasting your day isn't fair, if you had only responded to our last message we could have arranged either a cooking class, wood carving workshop or street food tour for which our hosts are generally available at short notice of a few hours. Alternatively you could have contacted several other travel companies (evident in the number of listings on Tripadvisor) to arrange something for you. That said, we do hope you get to attend a non-la workshop elsewhere in Vietnam. Our best wishes and safe travels! Cheers Anil

Great Platform

I took part in a conical hat workshop in Hue and then calligraphy class in Hanoi and they were a highlight of my trip in Vietnam. It met my expectation of having a special souvenir made on my own and most of all, to meet locals and support them in a perfect way. Backstreet Academy is a really impressive platform. I will visit them in other SA countries for sure.

Authentic cooking class
Jan 2017 • Couples
We have just returned from our cooking class with a lovely local lady (Nguyen) at her family home in Hue. She was a lovely host and although couldn't speak any English the fantastic translator Annie made the whole experience nice and easy. They were all so friendly and welcoming. We helped make pork and lemongrass skewers, marinated grilled pork and savoury pancakes. Annie translated the recipes and process perfectly and got us very involved. We then ate together in the home and was shown the Vietnamese way to eat. We learnt about their family and at times were joined by them too. The whole experience was very authentic and humbling. It only lasted 2hrs (rather than the 3 stipulated on the website) but this is a minor detail as the 2 hrs we did have were great. Plus we got to hand over their share of the cash at the end. ( note to the academy- it would be even nicer if the share of the organisers/academy and the local people was a fair 50/50 split) even still it was nice to know that they had the rest of their 40% in their hand. Overall great experience hosted by wonderful people!
