I needed to go down the street and the ride took 20 minutes longer than it should have. He purposefully went in a circle to increase the time and to get more money. Always make sure to show the driver a gps location or some sort of map of the destination. This may deter them from trying to rip you off if you seem like you know where you're going!

Beware of taxi scams in HCMC - my mom and I took a taxi from the Ben Thanh market to our hotel and it was one of the worst taxi experiences in my life. He stopped the car in a dark alleyway, and told us our hotel was right around the corner. When I told him we wanted to be dropped right in front of our hotel he said he would have to take a long way around and etc. I told him several times it did not matter how long it took that We wanted to stop at our hotel anyway and he just kept arguing over and over telling us that we should get out of the car. After I told him I just wouldn't leave he went around in circles and then stopped at the corner opposite of my hotel. That's when I gave him a 500.000₫ bill for a 140.000₫ ride (I had no change on me, and had just withdrawn from the atm 2million₫ in 4 500.000₫ bills). He then switched my bill with a 20.000₫ bill claiming that was the bill I had given him and that I still owed him 120.000. The money here is obviously confusing to foreigners especially because of the number of 0's and the colours (both bills are blue). He locked the doors and windows and wouldn't let us leave the car unless we paid him 100.000₫ (he was trying to make us think he was being nice now for allowing us to pay less). My mom was too scared to argue with him so she began collecting scattered change to give him the money so we could just leave. When she had the money in her hands he tried to take it, so she told him she would only pay if he unlocked the doors. When he did so, we got out of the taxi and went into a store to ask for help. We tried asking people to help us call the police or something (he was still parked right in front of the store and wouldn't leave) and everyone in the store just completely ignored us. It was as if we weren't even there. After 5mins of being in the store without a single soul trying to help us, the taxi driver came inside with 3 100.000₫ bills and handed it to us.
So after going around in circles to charge us more money, trying to rip us off, and basically locking us up in his car he still thought he was actually being nice by giving 300.000₫ back? He still ripped us off of 60.00₫ which ok isn't a lot, but still.

When we got the hotel we told the receptionist what happened and showed her his license plate. She said she would try to call the taxi companies and find out etc but that it would be very difficult to do anything about it. 😤😒

He asked too much for a little drive (we knew now after two weeks of Vietnam) but we were tired and it was still nothing for us compared with Holland so we got in. Het asked 100.000 what has been around 20.000. He probably thought therefor that we were just arrived in Vietnam, so when he stopped at our Hotel he tried to rip us off more by changing it in 10.000 bill and asked for 100.000 with a surprised face. Of course we were alert and we start screaming at him that we were going to go to the police and throwing the bill in his face we stepped out. He drove quickly away, probably he got frightened by our reaction the filty thief. Always ask to put the meter on, but better go with another company or much better and save take the Crab taxis(by app to contact them and they know were you are and come to you. You get by forehand their numberplate and look like normal cars)They work for themselves and are very reliable because all there personal information is known by the organisation. As soon they do something they are out of the list. Normal taxis are not happy with them. Be alert because at the airport another taxi tried to rip us off also, there you must take the taxi that provides the airport inside. We didnt see that straight away. Its very bad for the tourism of Vietnam what is already so poor and needs the tourists so hard!

Yes we were ripped off too according to our Hotel. I tried to get a price out of the guy and he was totally shady and kept changing his story, very far, very near! If I wasn't so tired I would have just got out.
Avoid at all costs ....rather like HCM!

Please look out for these taxis. They charge one rate verbally before you accept to use them and once you in they charge a different rate. Their initial price was 150000 VDN more than we were suppose to pay and 170000VDN more than reliable taxis. Rather use Vinasun Taxis who are reliable and honest and charged us only 27000VDN for the same distance

Can only agree with other reviews. This company is terrible. They tend to park outside of tourist spots and actively recruit you to their cabs. They take extra long circuitous routes, have meters which jump up rapidly, and use sleight of hand to switch out large denomination notes which you paid them with smaller ones. Our fare with them to a pagoda was 225,000 VND. Took Vinasun back and it was 65,000 for,the same distance. AVOID. Vinasun and Mailinh ( the green taxis) offered courteous and fair rides- seek them out.

The driver dropped us one block and asked 200,000 VND. The act is stupid so you can catch them easily. Also, pulled the old trick of replacing larger notes with smaller denomination. This left a bitter taste and the government should definitely try and regulate taxies

You can find those taxi everywhere, they are using the meter but it will jump inexplicably while you're not watching! The driver could speak english very well, was very nice and distracted us showing attactions and restaurants. For a 5 min drive we paid 220 VND. Same distance with Vinasun and Mailinh would cost you around 25 VND.

Took this taxi from outside the war museum. The meter was running 10 times faster than normal taxi in Vietnam. A shirt ride ending at 250 000. The driver also tried to rip us of as i paid 250 000 with a 200 000 and one 50 000 and he changed out the 200 000 with a 50 000 and claimed I gave him to little! Stay away. Use the reliable Viasun og Mai Linh taxi companies instead.

My daughter and I took one of these taxis from outside the War Museum, checked first that he had a meter and made sure it was running. Had the address and map showing where we wanted to go. Meter immediately started going up way too fast, we drove way out of town, miles away from where we should have been, then doors locked internally and he demanded all our money, shouting at us and wouldnt open doors until he had it all. Had the cheek to say as he let us out, be careful ladies its a dodgy area, then drove off leaving us stranded with no money. Happened to other people on our cruise ship on the same day.
