About
Halfway between a life-sized investigation, an original city-tour and a treasure hunt, Urban Tales invite you to solve a mysterious case of murder that took place in the thick ambiance of Cholon. By following in the footsteps of the culprit you will also enjoy an unusual self-guided tour of Ho Chi Minh City’s fascinating Chinese quarter. This 1/2 day excursion has been especially designed for individual travelers willing to discover the city by themselves. The scenario will lead the visitor to some of Cholon best kept secrets: century-old temples and pagodas, traditional Chinese medicine boutiques, votive paper shops and hidden lanes. Urban Tales is also a formidable opportunity to meet locals who will interact with you all along this scripted walking tour to bring you additional clues and help you solve the murder of Dr Lam. Price: 990.000 VND/adult & 750.000 VND/child (7-11 yo)

I really enjoyed how the local community was involved in this mystery game. It was really fun to walk down a street and suddenly be interacting with locals working in little shops and other places. Even people who were not part of the game would try to give little hints, because they have seen others playing the game many times. The clues were fun - sometimes a little confusing, but we were given a phone to contact the main guide when we needed help.

An innovative crossover between an escape room and guided tour, the first clue to solve was finding our way to the non-descript alley which was to be our starting point.

The tour takes you through local homes, Chinese medicine shops, temples, alleys and interesting photo opportunities along the streets of Cholon.

Frequent escape roomies may find the ‘murder solving’ part uninspiring but the game makes great use of the route as a way to explore the area. Cholon is full of character and offers a different vibe to other parts of HCM City. We had some trouble understanding the English over the phone but otherwise had no communication issues with everyone else we interacted with.

A little pricey for Vietnam standards, but a great way to explore.

I have to say I usually hate going on tours so I was not really sure what to expect here, but the self guided aspect attracted me so I gave it a try to this Cholon urban tales tour...

First we were picked up by classic cars to take us from our place to Cholon, which was in itself a great experience! And as soon as we arrived, the story began and was totally immersive.

Entering into the life of the locals, interacting with them and seeing where they live, discovering this old Chinese quarter from the inside, walking through small hidden alleys and pagodas (I was amazed by the strange ceremonies!), all supported by a good script... I have to say I am rarely so enthusiastic!

To all the Urban Tales team thanks so much for the good time, you have been really fantastic.

Definitely an experience not to miss if you are in Ho Chi Minh !

We started early but the old cars make your forget that pretty easily.
The whole trip was well balanced between investigating/playing and walking around/visiting. Good staffs also and a well organized day full of surprises and useful breaks all along the game.
I definitly recommend this, the best way to me to visit all ChoLon (Chinatown) with family or friends.

This is our first time doing a self-guided tour and we loved it!

The activity was well-organized and we enjoyed walking around the neighborhoods. Our guide called us a few times to make sure we were not lost.

It was quite challenging to solve the murder case but we finally did it! We also liked the treasure hunting part as well.

Thank you Urban Tales for organizing this experience.

My first time doing this type of self-guided tour and my group really enjoyed it! like other reviewers said, it was really a great way to explore Cholon, rather than wandering around aimlessly. I really enjoyed looking at the temples as they were all "live" temples with worshippers going about their daily business. it is a lot of walking and does get very hot - so just be prepared, but totally worth it.

This a very enjoyable activity that takes you through the streets of Cholon, the traditionally Chinese enclave in HCMC, on the hunt for the killer of a chinese doctor. You begin in the home of the doctor and are given visual and verbal clues that lay out the basis of the mystery (as well as detective hats and wonderfully perfumed tea.). From there it is a self guide tour through Cholon visiting temples, traditional medicine shops and restaurants to continue to gather clues as to the identity of the killer. Along the way there will be clues that will only be discovered by solving puzzles and honing a discerning eye. In addition, you will learn about historic architecture, Vietnamese folk tales, and the fascinating story of the Chinese in Saigon. The tour wraps up with a visit to a local restaurant for a tasty lunch. All in all about a half day spent on this exciting walking tour through Cholon. Be sure and spend the additional money for the tour company to pick you up and drop you of at your hotel in an antique french motor car.

When you think HCMC is all boring and just lots of dust and bad traffic, along comes a gem like this that reminds you to enjoy the city as You Should Have--- appreciating the beauty that you've been missing out amidst all the messiness and dust.

Things done right:
1. Reminding you to catch the beauty of certain old buildings and walking into the local neighbourhoods so that you'll understand a little better of how locals live (rather than stuck in our own world as privileged tourists/expats!)
2. Role-playing a detective is lots of fun, especially for a rather interesting plot that truly engages you. Makes you pay more attention to all the streets and sounds too.
3. Rather cool guide. Not intrusive, not too friendly either. Just the right amount of attention we need to immerse in our role and not ask for too much help.
4. Riding in a vintage car & cyclo. Ok, at first I thought all these were just gimmicky touristy things to do. But when we rode on them, hey it DID feel good. With a little bit of imagination, we did "travel back in time"...

Warning: LOTS of walking. Wear comfy shoes and clothes! It's gonna be hot with all that walking. Also, there's a little bit of a plot twist but it's really not that complicated. We over thought... and ended up doing a lot more than we have to! Overall we took around 5hours? Most people probably will take a shorter time but we really took our time exploring, taking pictures, sipping some teas, and allowed ourselves to get lots a little along the way... (before calling for help)
