I’ve been to Ho Chi Minh many times with work and been to all the museums, coffee shops, parks etc... and was looking for something different to pass the time on a Sunday. I came across the Saigon Hash House Harriers on trip advisor and decided to give it a go. I’d never heard of a Hash before so didn’t really know what I was letting myself in for but it was so much fun and the people were really welcoming. We met outside the caravelle hotel, leaving on a private bus at 2pm. The bus took around an hour and a half to reach the destination, the journey gave me chance to see parts around the edge of the city that I’ve never seen and also the countryside which was much closer to the city than I thought it would be. The rules were explained to me, basically follow the paper trail left by the hare, work as a team to eliminate routes etc. I am a regular runner and found it tough but really good fun. The terrain was a complete mixture, similar to a cross country race in the UK but including red ants which don’t mind chomping on any body part they attach themselves to. Lots of drinking and fun and games after the run, everyone was in really good spirits and it was a pleasure to meet so many lovely people from all over the world (UK, Netherlands, Germany, Vietnam, Australia...). They all went for food and drinks when we arrived back in the city but I already had plans in the evening unfortunately. If you have time on a Sunday, go along for the ride, you won’t regret it. We left at 2pm and arrived back around 8pm, cost was 300,000 dong if I remember correctly which I though was great value as it included the transport and unlimited food and drink throughout.

Last week was a very tough run through thick bush (as we say in NZ). Looking forward to this week - and the beer stop is a great way to catch up with people mid-run!

I've run three times with the SGN Hash and have enjoyed the runs and the friendly reception I received. Circles were funny and not too long and the On On's a lot of fun... On On .. Flasher (Gold Coast H3)

The Hash is one of the best ways to get out of the city and potentially explore the countryside, with a bunch of Vietnamese and Expats. Generally, the club catches a bus out to the countryside (Rice paddies, mountains etc), goes for 7-10km walk/run that has a Beer stop along the way, and then more beer afterwards. A great Sunday afternoon. A drinking club with a running problem - it fits the description perfectly Be prepared to get a bit wet and dirty (bring a change of clothes!) and for a bit of wicked/foul/filthy/crass language - but all in good fun!

Weird to see a Hash with tripadvisor reviews so I'll add my thoughts. This is a fun hash with good people. It's a good mix of locals and expats and they are quite welcoming to newcomers and visitors. More so than any of the other SE Asian hashes that I've been to. The run is always outside of town. By a lot. So expect to be spending 2-3 hours on the bus roundtrip. It's a great way to see the countryside. When I went it was an excellent trail through rubber tree farms and along dry creek beds. But it is a lot of time spent on the bus. The biggest downside is that it's insanely expensive. Most of the SE Asian hashes are pretty expensive compared to the US which I find strange. But 300k vnd is crazy. That's twice of anything that I've encountered hashing in the states. And the beer is sponsored so you aren't paying for that. There are some light snacks but nothing much. Basically you are paying for the transit I guess. It just seems really steep. I have this suspicion that most hashes in SE Asia are taking in a profit. I dunno and it doesn't really matter in the end. I just know I would still complain about the price of this hash if it was in the US and I was still working, but I complain a lot. If you are interested in seeing different parts of the city, then the monday hash may be of more interest since it is inside the city, but this is a great for seeing rural areas. And if you have not hashed before, do read up on what a typical hash entails. The Saigon H3 website has a very good overview. The drinking part at the end is typically very bawdy (they aren't too overboard at this hash) and everyone gets mocked for a variety silly things. It's all in good fun but you should know what you're getting into. On-On :)
