Several years ago I passed a bus of French tourists entering this lacquer ware factory, so I tailed along. The guide was a very nice lady who spoke both French and English. We followed her through the factory, observing the various stages of lacquer ware, and then entered the showrooms.
I immediately recognized their lacquer ware as top quality items we had seen in friend's homes. My wife is Vietnamese, and our lacquer ware was purchased years ago. Frankly, what we have, with one exception, is a grade below phuongnam's lacquer ware. The factory manufactures a complete range of furniture and art objects, using painting, duck shell, and mother or pearl techniques. Their art ranges from traditional, through montage, to impressionism, to modern art pieces, to include triptychs, single panels, and art objects such as bowls, etc.
I took my wife to see their wares this year, and while she was impressed I couldn't convince her that we should replace out current furniture and art items.
Anyway, if you like art and are looking for a unique souvenir to take home; or if Vietnamese traditional art and furniture is your choice, then a visit to their factory if recommended. If you'd like to see a fuller range of Vietnamese art, to include lacquer ware and other media, I'd recommend a visit the the Saigon Museum of Fine Arts, across the avenue from the Thanh Ben market, two blocks down Pho Duc Chinh Avenue (runs parallel to Calmette)

At the outset of your visit, you do get to see some artists making lacquerware with egg shells, sea shells and paint, and then you quickly get to the displays of completed work. They have a good variety of sizes, styles and products. The staff is courteous and helpful. We purchased several pieces and they made a box to carefully wrap them. They even made us a handle so that we could carry the box easily. They accept credit cards. All in all, if you want to see the art form, and/or if you want to buy, you’ll find a good selection here.

Obviously one of these stops that the tourist companies get back handers for dropping bus loads of tourists off at. Having said that the factory tour was interesting and did lead into a shop at least 5 times the floor area of the factory.
Really good quality items but reflected in the price. Like everywhere else in Vietnam they are desparate for American dollars and really interested in dealing in the Vietnamese Dong.

This is not a real factory
This is simply a shop pretending to be a factory
The factories are elsewhere in Vietnam, not downtown in the capital city.
Prices are what you’d expect to find in the West.
It’s okay if you were told what is going on but effectively it’s a scam. Don’t be fooled.

Great demonstration using mother of pearl and egg shells to create beautiful paintings, plates and other artefacts. Huge gallery with some beautiful exhibits. Made a small purchase of a picture with local Vietnamese boat scene. Could have easily made more purchases if not for the transport back home. We did not experience any hard sell and not very busy when we went so able to view with ease. Would recommend if not seen this craft before.

We had been to this facility 10 years ago and bought some incredible pieces. Sadly on was lost in a move so was excited to return and replace lost item, still available in eggshell lacquer art, so incredible. You can see how they are made and then purchase one for excellent souvenir and memory of wonderful Vietnam. Highly recommend, friendly and no pressure purchase experience. Helpful staff and laid back approach much appreciated.

Usually trips to factories like this do not interest me as I have been to countless of them before on trips across the globe but this one was really good (except their lack of H & S for their manufacturing staff!).
The goods are all made by their staff and are of good quality albeit rather more than one can buy elsewhere on market stalls for seconds - these gave 17 layers of lacquer.

If you want to buy really good lacquerware I highly recommend going here. Last year I bought some pictures which I,had seen on their website which was shipped to me and arrived safely. This year I went to visit them and bought more pictures and other items which again are on their way to me now. Mr Hing is the man to see who speaks good English and is very helpful. All their items are beautifully made, vases, coasters etc. And good prices.

Had no idea how lacquerware was made. Walking through the different steps was extremely interesting (we were taken in charge by french speaking couple, very nice, very pleasant). And then visiting the gallery...... Such beautiful pieces and some we really fell in love with. Only we did not feel comfortable with taking them on our flight, so we settled for a bowl.
Not many places for such visits. We understand there is another one in the north of the country which we will definitely try on a further trip.
