This church was the scene of the dramatic demise of the ngo dinh diem government. November 1963 diem and his brother Nhu had taken refuge here after the military take over sponsored by the Americans especially henry Cabot lodge. Promised exile and safe passage the brothers surrendered in this church but outside were murdered in cold blood inside a tank. The bench in the church shows were they prayed for the last time..

Good for a few pics, open from 9-5, it’s a typical church with some nice architecture. One time visit only.

We stumbled upon Cha Tam church whilst exploring Cho Lon. Cha Tam church is definitely not as touristy as Notre Dame, Tan Dinh Church or Huyen Sy Church, but it was an oasis of peace when compared to the surroundings.

I did not realize it but this was the church where Diem (the president of SVN) took refuge in after the coup.
Definitely a place for Vietnam War history buffs to visit.

About 300m from Binh Tay market towards the city is this church which is within its own courtyard and once inside the noise of the traffic disappears, so quiet and peaceful. A seat at the rear of the church is marked as the location where in Nov 1963 the then catholic President and his brother were seized, having sought sanctuary by soldiers during a coup and murdered while being taken back to the city. Has an eerie modern day Thomas Beckett feel about it.

The Cha Tam church is located in the heart of Saigon's Chinatown - Cholon. Church is normally closed except for Mass times, however the compound is accessible. There is an interesting plaque commemorating the Vietnamese martyrs.

First of all don't go out of your way to see the church, but if you happened to be visiting district 5 then do check it out. It's a bit different than Western Catholic churches but also an important landmark to where the previous president and his brother were killed.

I was impressed by the architecture, upkeep, and the standing room only Mass being held on 1 October 2017. The overflow of attendees (families) was in the courtyard where the Mass could be heard on loud speakers. One can include seeing the vary large market and several temples/pagodas in that area while in that part of Saigon. It is an adventure to ride on the back of a scooter from across the city to the Cholon area. Go for it!

We walked here from our hotel Liberty central, it took about 45 minutes. The church is a lovely impressive building--- quite a contrast from what sits around it. The church was open for people to have a look around or sit in quiet contemplation.

I found this church on a walk around Chinatown (Cholon) and the surrounding areas. I had no agenda and was just wandering around and came upon this beautiful church. It was open and very peaceful and I decided to wander around the church and grounds itself and admire the building. Really nice church and architecture and peaceful grounds.
