This cooking class was the greatest! Especially to learn about the history of each item used before cooking with it. We did 3 dishes, fresh spring rolls, green mango & bbq chicken salad, and lotus fried rice. So so so so yummy! The chef was great with instructing and we added a wine pairing to our meal as well.

We (5 of us) spent a lovely Sunday morning going to a market and then cooking a delicious lunch with Chef Ly. Very clear directions and logistics, and we learned to make - and enjoy! - a wonderful 3-course meal (plus dessert) ourselves. A very worthwhile experience and way to absorb local food culture in HCMC.
(It’s part of the Hoa Tuc Restaurant where we also had an excellent dinner experience earlier in the week.)

We took this cooking class and market tour through Viking. Our guide met us at the market and showed us many of the foods we would be cooking with. At the cooking school we each had a propane cooktop, all the utensils needed to cook, and the ingredients we would need. Our chef was understandable and went through each step. We made a sour soup, a pork and shrimp salad, and chicken in a clay pot. It was fun to eat the food after we cooked it. We were sent home with the recipes in a little booklet. I have made one of the recipes at home. It really is reminiscent of the tastes of Vietnam. I would definitely reccomend doing this!

Market tour was very nice and informative, and also a small group, which made it easier to ask questions. Our guide was friendly and easy to understand. The cooking class was fun and we loved eating what we had cooked. Especially fun was learning not just new foods but also using new cooking tools and frying our own spring rolls and birds nest noodles. The class was run very smoothly with lots of helpers to clean up and keep us on schedule but never felt rushed. Loved the air conditioning, iced tea and recipes to take home at the end.

My girlfriend and I were very excited to visit the Saigon Cooking Course given the glowing reviews on TripAdvisor. Unfortunately, we had a really disappointing experience.
Put simply: the value for money is awful. The class size was large: there were 15 of us and only one chef and it was clear that the course had been overbooked (they had to add an extra table, there weren't enough deep fryers for the whole class, etc.). The market tour was perfunctory and was conducted by a hostess, who while nice, explained little about the ingredients or the market itself. And there was very little cooking involved in the course: one of the dishes was pho (noodle soup) which was prepared entirely by the chef. The other two dishes (spring rolls and a salad) just required assembly, as almost all the ingredients were pre-chopped and pre-measured.
Your mileage may vary: if you want a good (but expensive by Vietnamese standards) meal in a nice building, accompanied by a light lesson from a fairly low-level cook, then Saigon Cooking Course is for you.
But if you want to get your hands dirty to prepare a proper Vietnamese meal, if you want to learn about traditional ingredients, Vietnamese markets, and the country's rich culinary history, or if you just want to interact with your chef and have some fun, then Saigon Cooking Course would be a poor choice.
Save your money, take a cooking course somewhere else.

My daughter, sister and I booked into this School and it was fantastic right from the start. We all met at the market and was given a guided tour to source our ingredients from rice papers, noodles, the freshest seafood and meat, fresh herbs and spices etc etc etc. Did you know that Vietnam has the freshest meat in the world as well as the best Fish sauce?? We made some great dishes - spring rolls, lotus stem salad and beef in beetle leaves - all prepared and cooked by us. It was so clean and so well organised. It was interesting to sit at a table and meet different people from around the world and share stories as well as eating all our dishes. Our Teacher was fantastic with a great sense of humour and could speak english very well. Would recommend this to anyone who wants to be part of a genuine Vietnamese experience.

As a working professional chef I can tell you this class is good not only for home cooks but for professionals as well. Vietnam is fast becoming a culinary hot spot and I can think of no better way of learning than taking this hands on cooking class. You don’t sit there and take notes and watch, You roll up your sleeves and learn the right way by preparing and cooking all ingredients you prepare! Chef does a great job of talking about each ingredient, substations and encourages checking for seasoning by tasting all along the way. The staff is friendly, location is easy to find and the class is worth every penny. I only wish they offered more classes. Tip, bring camera, photo each step when possible and sit across from instructor. At the end of the class a great recipe booklet is given for the days class.

The half-day gourmet tour was a fun experience well-suited for us, because it was held in English and spoke to the person who knows very little about cooking and even less about Vietnamese cuisine yet eager to learn first-hand about both. And all cooking prep work was done for us, so it’s a super-easy, low-stress activity.
There were about 14 students in the class. We first met around 8:30 at the Ben Thanh market where we toured Vietnamese produce and ingredients. Then we returned to the Hoa Tuc restaurant for the instructor-led group cooking. We ate what we cooked, and were given the recipes to take home as souvenirs.
I suggest you bring along with you a personal beverage (I took my ever-present water bottle) and some light snacks, because it’s a 4-hour activity and there were no easy options to pick up beverages or ready-made food at any point. Oh, and don’t forget your camera so you can take pictures along the way. =)

If you chose the option including the market, here is the organization: you meet the chef at the market (they send you a map and clear explanation, you can’t miss him then they bring you to their cooking studio. The Chef is fun and the tour was very interesting. Our group consisted of “happy foodies” so that the visit took place in a pleasant atmosphere.
The class itself was very well-organized with a very caring team. We absolutely loved what we have cooked, our only concern is that there is some ingredients that might lack when back home. You shall ask them before joining a class what will be on the menu as they change it every day. Highly recommended.

I always enjoy cooking classes when abroad. In Saigon, had a class at Hoa Tuc Restaurant with Chef Phung. Met first, with 6 others, at Ben Tranh market to buy some items - fresh rice noodles, lemon mint, purple Thai basil - and to learn about other produce - keep your eyes closed at the fish section if you're vegetarian. Chef Phung speaks very good English and has a pleasant, upbeat personality.
We were joined back at Hoa Tuc by several students who hadn't taken the optional market tour. Our menu was fresh spring rolls (different and better from the Thai version I had learned);a stuffed rice ball - a very preparation-heavy item - more of a 'restaurant' dish; and lastly Bun with barbequed pork - delicious!. We also learned to use some uniquely vietnamese utensils - the water hyacinth stem splitter was keen.
Chef Phung worked very well with the varying degrees of cooking expertise of his students and was a pleasure. I'd mostly certainly recommend his class. It's downtown near the Caravelle, Rex and Majestic.
