We live in Vietnam. When we have guests (frequently) we typically take them on private or small group tours of places like Cu Chi and Mekong. Yesterday, we arranged a private tour with EXO Travel to Can Gio (Monkey Island) for four of us (two guests) and it was a disaster. Starting with the bus. The bus was terrible. Bone shaking, hot with no curtains - we baked in the sun and have sore backs and necks as a result. Then there was the bus driver. He took a wrong turn and after driving for a while had to reverse for more than 15 minutes down a road. Then he was not there to pick us up when the boat brought us back, despite the distance from drop off to pick being 200 meters and him having more than an hour to move the bus that far. To top it off, on the way home he decided he knew the best way from the city to our house in Thao Dien, despite it being more than double the distance of the normal way that all taxis and people take. It was incredible just how bad this driver was. In fact, I am not sure he was a professional driver. The Guide was also of no use at all - I think it was her first time as she was unable even to find the restaurant for lunch. She tool enough pictures all day so I assume she enjoyed herself. In short, private tours with EXO are not worth it. If you use them to book with others that's your choice. Take one of their tours and you have been warned.

We booked via the in hotel desk in the New World Hotel in Saigon where we were staying. For both trips we had the same guide, Ms Le Minh Chau and she was wonderful. Both trips were private guided tours, so we had a driver plus Chau, and on the Mekong our own boat. The really big plus was that on the journeys to and from the sites we could sit and chat with her about all things related to Vietnam, which gave a great inisght into modern life in this country. She was a superb guide too, and steered us around the big groups so that we had a much quieter and more enjoyable experience. Both trips were excellent, the Mekong especially so, and would definitely use Exo again when we next visit.

From the start of our visit to Vietnam to the end, 3 weeks later, we were treated to a fantastic service. Upon arrival at Hanoi airport Mr. Vinh-Tel our English speaking guide was waiting for us, despite a 3/4 hour wait due to our luggage being some of the last items to come off the plane. On every tour we took with him, his knowledge and information was amazing and presented in a very interesting and engrossing way. His assistance at Hanoi airport when we were travelling to Ho Chi Minh city was invaluable, arranging with the check in clerk to allocate us extra leg room seats and taking us straight to the departure gate was invaluable and much appreciated. Arriving at Ho Chi Minh city airport again our English speaking guide Troy was waiting for us. He accompanied us on every tour and again his knowledge was amazing and imparted with great enthusiasm. He was also interested in teaching us a few words of conversational Vietnamese, for example Mot, hai, ba, YO. Instead of cheers, We in turn taught him "Slainte mhath" among other Scots words. Both guides did everything possible to ensure our experiences in Vietnam were well informed and memorable. Due to security restrictions Troy was not allowed into Ho Chi Min city airport but was most diligent at the hotel to ensure we had everything we should have and the same diligence at the airport.

Our tour of Vietnam & Cambodia was organised by Adventure World from Australia, while the onground arrangements were made by Exo Travel Vietnam & Exo Travel Cambodia which were excellent. We can’t commend their guides highly enough & would like to personally thank them all: Bang who took us from Hoi An to Hue and showed us round the Cham Museum in Danang; Lang with whom we visited the Imperial Citadel and from whom we learnt about the Vietnamese dynasties & the change in their language from Chinese to Latin characters in the 17th century. Duc in Hanoi introduced us to the Temple of Literature, one of the 1st universities, founded in the 11th century. Duc was particularly helpful with the train to Sapa where we were met by Quyen who introduced us to H’mong villages as we walked through terraced rice paddys. In Dalat we were met by Richie Rich who again was a mine of information on Vietnamese history, as was Kenith in Siem Reap who introduced us to the wonders of Angkor Wat. All our guides were very helpful, we learnt so much from them all. An amazing trip. Ros Poole & Nick Westley
