If you are expecting a nice train ride, you'd be disappointed.
Jan 2020
The train gets you to LoiCaw from Hanoi overnight. But if you were expecting a nice train ride and some sleep, you'd be disappointed. The train was old, somewhat clean but not really, the bathroom was terrible, and the ride was too rough to get any sleep. Take the bus during the day time to get to Sapa from Hanoi.

Restless night
Dec 2019 • Couples
Sapa as well as the trains were not what we expected. The train was old. The cabin was smelly and dark. On the move, it was noisy and swaying in every direction. When the effect of strong hypnotic worn off, continue to sleep was impossible. This was the worst overnight train experience we ever encountered. The amenity was not as good as the Vietnam train.
And Sapa was full of air pollution from construction dust and burning wood fire. The city as well as the tribal villages were expanding very fast and had lost their charms and characters. In my opinion, the trip was not worthed. Northern Thailand was a much better choice.

Much better than the bus
Sep 2019
Hanoi to Lao Cia night train . Leave at 9.20 pm , we booked a 2 berth cabin , no sharing with strangers . 2 bunk beds , pillows and blanket . Bed side table with a cold beer and coke , bananas , biscuits and nuts are a nice touch . Hot coffee and tea arrive as we depart . Great views of Hanoi as we slowly leave the city . Sleep well as we rattle and sway through the night . Shortly before we arrive in Lao Cia there is a knock on the door and coffee and breakfast bars delivered . The train was way better than the return trip by road .

My experience with Fanxipan
Nov 2019 • Couples
For anyone contemplating going by night train from Hanoi to Lao Cai and then further on to Sapa, here's my experience with Fanxipan:
Buy the ticket for example via 123 Go Asia. Print the voucher and take it with you to the Fanxipan Restop latest 1 hour before train departure, right opposite of the train station entrance, they will hand you the boarding pass. Make sure you go to the correct train station in Hanoi, where the northbound trains depart from.
Is the train clean - the cabin and the sheets, yes.
The toilet was awful. The bathroom is just a sink where you can brush your teeth, it cannot be locked and you're out in the public. Don't expect that you can properly wash yourself. I recommend to bring a small towel from home and soak it with water from the sink. Bring another towel to dry yourself as they don't provide towels at all.
At least there were no bugs.
Can you sleep - it depends on how sensitive you are to movement. The train shakes a lot. A LOT. All the way from Hanoi to Lao Cai. I personally was able to sleep but another person didn't close their eyes for not even 10 minutes and arrived in Lao Cai completely wrecked. The bunks are relatively hard. The airco is blowing continously full speed and cannot be controlled individually. Choose to lay your head towards the door instead of the window and you will not be cold. The blanket is fine.
They serve coffee and some refreshments and snacks (crisps, nuts), the latter you have to pay. One coffee was free. Don't board the train hungry.
Two small bottles of water are free of charge, also two cans of beer (interesting choice). There were also some banana's and nuts in our cabin when we boarded.
When you arrive in Lao Cai and your final destination is Sapa, ignore all the taxi offers and go to the official bus stop which is a few metres to the left once you leave the station hall. Bus number 01 to Sapa. It costs 30.000 Dong per person. It takes you to Sapa in about an hour, only picking up some locals on the way. The road is winding and the Vietnamese driving style is adventureous - just trust that this guy is driving the same route every day and he knows what he's doing.
Would I take this train again - probably I would. The pro's outnumbered the con's, just manage your expectations.

An eagle eye view

Coming from a hot and humid country, this is the best moment of my life. I highly recommend come to this place as you can see view sapa town from fansipan peak, ticket only cost 700k dong kind of expensive but it is worth it as it include tram ride and cable car ride. You could see China from there too.

Overpriced

First impression is that the place looks very clean, the hallway were pretty shiny. However, there was absolutely no wifi and the staff spoke hardly to no English. Still, the beds were pretty clean and they even had toothbrush sets. Toilet was as expected - smelly. I slept in the last cabin next to it and the entire night, i could smell it. The ride wasn't smooth. If i had to pick again, i may think twice about spending the money for this train.

Fanixspan Lao Cai to Hanoi
Apr 2019
Constant smell of cigarette smoke pouring into our room. However, this only happened one way. Beds comfortable. Rooms good for 2 people - could not imagine sharing with 2 strangers - we booked all four to be sure we had a cabin to ourselves. We heard the sleeper buses are the way to go (shorter duration and much cheaper) but we did not try them. I don’t actually know if smoking is permitted but it was constant throughout the night and definitely impaired our experience on the return trip. The water, snacks, toothbrush and wipes were a nice touch.

Think it will be fun? It's not!

We had a four berth carriage for the two of us, I can't imagine how four people begin to sleep. The train looks like something from the first world war and travels like it, so uncomfortable that sleep is nigh impossible and the toilet was disgusting.
We have since learned that a bus from Hanoi to Sapa only take 5 hours - that has to be a better option.

what a trip

ok, so it's not luxurious, but comfortable. weird sharing a room with two French folks that didn't speak English, but they were nice. bathroom serviceable, but not too fancy. ride was bumpy, but mysterious. a genuine experience. cool to walk in the train hall way at night and look out an open window

Absolutely fine

We got the train from Hanoi to SaPa. Booked one cabin of 4 for 2 of us. I don’t know what the people before were complaining about. Comfortable bunks, bedding clean. Snacks of bananas and nuts in cabins and coffee arrived in the morning. Loo fine - you wouldn’t want to spend long in it but nothing wrong with it. We managed to sleep 5-6 hours. Train arrived promptly at5.30.
