The puppet show is very good and even more fun is to visit the workshop and learn about how to make them

Great Experience

A cultural production of water puppet show that is very enjoyable. Appreciate the skill behind it all. Didn’t realise this until end of show and the talented puppeteers allow me to try it. It’s heavier than you can imagine and they must be pretty strong to be able to swish around the water smoothly.

Intriguing part of traditional Vietnamese artistry
Jan 2018 • Friends
Mr. Liem follows the path of six generations before him in learning the art of water puppetry. He makes his own puppets, and has many made by his father and grandfather. He created a mobile stage and pool so that he can present water puppet shows at schools and other locations, besides his home theater. We were able to talk with him and his wife, through our guide/interpreter, and see a room full of old and new puppets. The show would have been even better if there would be an explanation of the story that was being played out by the puppets.

Very cool to see

Here's how it works: this guy is the seventh generation in his family to do this, he's travelled all over the world but mostly performs for people in his home along with his wife. There is no schedule or anything, you email him and then arrange a time to come to his house, then he'll walk you down an alley to his home and show you some info about him and his family, how the puppets are made, and then perform a show in the top floor of his home in a little pool they have set up. After that he'll let you try to use them (it's harder than it seems!) And take you back downstairs to go over the stages of building them. He speaks zero English, all translation is done through his wife. It was really cool to meet a master of the craft and get up close and personal with the art form, I'd way rather do this than go to one of the big shows.

Enjoyable show in the home of the puppeteers.

It was an unexpected surprise to see that the pool of water in which this show takes place was upstairs in the home of the talented puppeteers. We enjoyed having the opportunity to speak (through our guide and interpreter) with the artists, to see a brief show, and then to have the opportunity to work the puppets ourselves. By the way, it's not as easy as it looks!

enjoyable afternoon after walking through some narrow alleys we came to this house. After an explanation of this art form we were taken up to the fourth floor (steep steps) to watch the show We then had the chance to try working the puppets and had a look at how they were made Phan Thannh Liem was interesting to listen to and we enjoyed the show.

Another form of entertainment

This art is not something the Western World is used to. i enjoyed my afternoon with this show and family. Initially we were given a talk by the owner. We then saw the show with a variety of puppets. There were various messages throughout the performance - some history, animals, people interaction etc. At the end the audience was invited to try and use the puppets. We had a drink on the first floor and discussed how some of the puppets were made. Some of the information given has already been highlighted.

What a Special Treat!
May 2017 • Friends
Water Puppet show was on our group agenda and I expected the standard show. Was very pleasantly surprised instead to be taken to the home of the puppeteer. His house is at the end of several alleys but opened to a delightful experience. He shared his families history of puppet making, provided us with an up close puppet show on the fourth floor of his home, and then spent time with us in his workshop. Very special indeed!

A craft to br treasured

Visiting the water puppetry theatre was a real treat. I started with a walk down a maze of alleys and climbing up 4 flights to a small theatre in the house. The puppeteer and his wife but on a lovely show with hand carved puppets. In today's world of 3D movies and CGI and was really nice to step back in time to a simpler entertainment. One can only hope that their children pick up this tradition so that its not lost

Wonderful time and experience

This was so much more fun an inmate than your larger shows. We not only saw the show but how the puppets were made. This gentleman is a third generation puppeteer and his wife is also very active in the show. Being able to see all the old puppets his family used was a treat and you can also purchase puppets direct from him if you desire. His show was quite fun and his puppet scooter/road safety program was a hoot to see.
