Be prepared to man handle your own luggage to the platform: there's an elevator up to the bridge but only a stair case with a metal ramp attached to one edge to get to the platform. Trying to wheel a large case on the ramp without it running away or pulling me over was challenging. I was fortunate that a man spotted my struggle and came to my assistance.

We had pre-booked our tickets on-line, for a sleeper train to Hue. It was a bit nerve-wracking cos we didn't really know what was going on. In fact it was pretty straight forward once we had talked to the staff at the enquiries counter. Our self-printed tickets were accepted. The station is not very photogenic. Maybe it had been destroyed during the war?

When you enter the station, you will see the trains behind glass door. Turn right to find the ticket counter and toilet. Turn left to find the Vinmart , cafe and passenger waiting area. The building has no air conditioning but is not too hot because of ceiling fan. But after 12 noon it start to become hotter. The building is in town area, walk able to Old Quarter but be careful while crossing roads. If you don't want to dine at cafe inside the Railway Station, there is a Highlands Coffee cafe just opposite railway's main entrance.
I had to go up first floor for exit to platform 2, then get my ticket checked and walk across and down bridges to platform.
The toilet is clean and dry. There is self paid locker available too. The ticketing offers speak minimum English languages. I found 3 self buy ticket machine near the HP charging station. Comfortable to wait for train. I saw the Mango hotel just next to the station.

We are a group of 4 friends and have arrived at Ga Ha Noi (Hanoi Railway Station) at around 5.30am. We wanted to look for the luggage lockers to store our baggage’s as we saw the signboard at the main entrance of the railway station.
As we are unable to locate the luggage lockers, we proceeded to contact the station staff to check with her on the location of the luggage lockers. She quickly directed us to the VIP Area and mentioned that the luggage lockers are located there. We were then attended by another english-speaking station staff who then negotiated the price of the luggage lockers with us and quoted different rates depending on the storage duration. They appear very worried when other people saw us (non-station staff) at their illegal locker area and rushed us to place our baggage in the lockers quickly. A receipt was issued to us once we made payment for the storage.
This is when we noticed something amiss as we suspect that the lockers are the illegal ones which the station staff use for their personal belongings storage, they use it as an avenue to earn side income and trick unaware tourists. When we went to collect our baggage, we saw other staff tried to direct a group of 3 tourists to their illegal locker area and we tried to warn them but to no avail. The station staff appears very defensive and kept insisting that the “authorized” locker area is their illegal locker area. The staff ask the issued receipt back from me and tore it right after that.
Please be aware of this when locating the luggage lockers at Ga Ha Noi, do not ask the station staff as I believe that there are some station staff collaborating to trick tourists. You may look for the locker area yourself by following the signs at the station, it is located at the staircase area (level 1) which is near the toilets.

i arrived at Ha Noi railway station from Lao Cai. Took a night train and arrived at this railway station around 550am.
it is great to walk across the overhead bridge connecting to the railway station and looking at he complex rail. should be a great photo scene i believe.
one thing that i worry is how clean is the washroom specially crowded area like this. but to my surprise, it is great.
i on my Grab and it took 10 minutes for the car to arrived at this station. so no problem at all. very convenient

The original building was damaged in the American bombings several times and rebuilt in a modern way. The building is still beautiful and retain its French style. It is very neatly kept. Descriptions in English is adequate to help the international passengers.

It may be old but it functions as intended. The toilets are clean and have bidets even. It is very bare, but from the looks of it, empty rooms and hallways have stories to tell. Really, it's just a place to take that slower route to elsewhere.

As it was Tet and nothing better to do we wandered over to the station. Thinking Grand central style!! Not worth the effort. The best bit about the train is where the train and tracks are very close to the houses and they have to take their washing in when the train goes by!

Adequate train station for travel. Do not expect to get quality food here. Stop before arriving at the station if you want food or snacks for travel.

I plan to take the night train to Hue from Hanoi, should I book the train ticket on line?which site?or I can buy the ticket at train station before I leave?which one is less expensive?Thank you!

I booked through Baolao was great online ticketing service. There is a small extra charge about less than $1 australian from memory but well worth no hassle. The ticket is emailed to you as pdf which you can show the train conductors straight from your phone before boarding. Depending on how busy I wouldnt rely on getting it from the station. If you book a sleeper get the bottom bunk.
