Amazing handicrafts

Lacquerware is a beautiful craft when one learns about how the drawings are drawn and filled in with oyster shells and egg shells. It is a step by step process and worthwhile to see how the miniscule pieces of shells are glued on to the pictures ....which then get soaked in some liquid treatment vessels to get the lacquer finish. What is truly amazing is that even though lacquerware is wood ..the finished products can withstand heat and water. You can get vases, tealightholders, bowls, plates, and the famous wall hanging screens....all with a beautiful sheen and pattern unique for each. ( remember its a painstaking handiwork)

Fascinating and worth a look

I knew about lacquer ware but was never greatly taken by it or interested in it. As part of a tour of Hanoi we were taken here to see how they make it. After seeing the months of work that goes into one art piece I know view lacquer ware with new eyes! The Vietnamese are the only ones to use egg shell in their lacquer ware so this was a point of difference for me and made a unique souvenir of our trip. There was a huge variety of paintings, bowls, trays, vases and plates for sale. We bought small salt and pepper pots decorated in egg shell lacquer. Very different and not something I've seen anywhere else before. The Picasso inspired art work was beautiful and combined all 3 styles - paint, abalone shell and egg shell.

Wonderful place to fall in love with Vietnamese traditional painting
Aug 2015 • Solo
The workshop is instructed by Mr. Tuan, who is a lecturer in Hanoi University of Industrial fine art. His specialty is Lacquer, one of the traditional painting in Vietnam. Paining lacquer does not require special skill in painting or drawing so most of us can do. It is focusing on color, imagination thus it can help us express your feeling in an beautiful and unpredictable way. It is nice option for relaxing, understanding a traditional painting and also for "do it yourself" souvenir.
