Being students travelling on a tight budget, we were not 100% sure if a cruise would be worth the money. This happened to be one of our best decisions.

We chose this course since it was cheaper than the others and of course we were a bit nervous of what to expect. The standard was really high above expectations - almost too luxurious for the amount we paid. I wonder what more the 5 star tour has to offer.

The boat itself was made of wood and it was very beautiful and traditional.
The room we got was on the top deck and was spacious with a double bed and a toilet + shower. We were surprised that it had aircondition (being a wooden boat) and the view (we had two windows) was of course spectacular. You have to beware that there is no wifi, but we didn’t miss it since there were plenty to experience.

The food itself was fantastic and we were served a wide variety. They do ask if you have any allergies, we didnt and thus got the standard menu. We got a lot of sea food, calamari, oysters, shrimp, fish. But also beef, pork and duck served in traditional vietnamese manners.
We are in general very cautious with sea food, but all of our food were perfectly cooked.
The food is served continously and you share with people around your table (6 people).
Only thing you pay extra for are drinks except at the breakfast (where you get delicious fruit juice and coffee/tea).

There were also plenty of activities, kayaking, swimming, a bit of hiking, cave sightseeing, tai chi on the top deck and a little food class.
We came for the view, but the activities were surprisingly fun. Especially the kayaking (it was our first time) were a great way to see some of the beautiful Bay.

Alex and his Crew of the Royal Palace Cruise were very warm and welcoming and made sure everything went smooth and according to schedule. Alex is really friend, has very good humour and you feel like being in a good company.

Again, while being on a tight schedule, we think this was one of our best excursions in South East Asia and it is worth every penny.

In the past few days, my husband and I visited Hanoi for a short holiday. It was a great experience that we have in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay.

Our tour guide (from Vietnam Open Tour) - Ms Lily is a pretty, friendly and experienced tour guide. She is able to explain the places visited like Mausoleum, Museum, Ho Chi Minh's house, One Pillar Pagoda, Literature temple and Quoc Tu Giam etc. She also told us some stories like "returned sword lake" etc.

We boarded a boat call "Royal Palace Cruise" for Ha Long Bay 2 days 1 night trip. It is a fantastic journey while cruising towards thousands of amazing limestone islands emerging from emerald water. We were warmly welcomed by friendly captain and crews. Foods are delicious, especially those seafood and spring rolls.
There are activities, I like kayaking the most. We have a great time in kayaking. Visiting cave is a great memory too.

We have a great time during the trip!

I must say that halong is extremely turistic,
Do no expect to have the vistas to yourself. We took the 3 day 2 night cruise; what they do is that they manage to squeeze yourself between two 1 night trips by making a sidetrip on the second day. The boat was superb; the food (specially the seafood) was great, drinks affordable, rooms clean and spacious enough, and above all: the staff was really friendly and open to suggestions. Thomas (the crew manager) was exceptional. The only suggestion we had was to improve the side-trip boat we used on our 2nd day; the rest was great!

This was a really excellent cruise, the boat was luxurious, the food delicious and the staff were really great. They were always cheerful and did their best to make sure everyone had a nice time. I was especially impressed with Mr Le Xuan Hoang who went out of his way to ensure that a phoned charger was returned to me (when I carelessly left it behind at a beach bungalow).

I would definitely recommend this company and next time the only thing I will do differently will be to stay longer!

Summary: Excellent crew service but poor condition of rooms on level 3.

My elderly mother with walking difficulties, my cousin and I stayed in 2 rooms in the Royal Palace junkboat cruise overnight (2D1N). Halong Bay was a picturesque place but we didn’t enjoy our room on the junkboat cruise. The cruise was arranged as part of a 5D4N tour by a travel agency in Singapore so I’m not sure how much of it was paid to Royal Palace.

The junkboat is made up of 3 small levels with around 14 rooms in total, in addition to a main dining area (on 2nd level) and the upper deck (on 3rd level). To get to the junkboat, we took a 3.5 hour bus ride from Hanoi to the pier. We had to transfer to a small boat which will then bring you to the junkboat cruise. In these instances, there isn’t any proper docking area, the process of crossing over to the boat intimidated my mother. The tour guide and helpers from the cruise were on hand to help so it felt safer and we were very grateful for that.

The Royal Palace was supposed to be in a “4-star” category but we were disappointed with the rooms they assigned us. They actually said they gave us better rooms on the 3rd level, the “Deluxe Room” (406 and 401). The rooms came with basic toiletries and towels.

Starting with room 406:

1. There was an unpleasant foul smell which was a mix of sewage plus mould, I’m not sure how to describe it. The tour guide explained it was because they repaint the boat frequently so he attributed the smell to the paint. But what was obvious was that there was a lingering (unpleasant) smell & it kept me up all night.
2. The structure of the room seemed to have deteriorated over time, so the room is not level. The whole room seems to be tilted to one side. As a result, when i started to bath, the water does not flow to the standing shower area drainage area but flooded out to the rest of the shower area. I will attach a photo to show this. We only found out at night after the day of activities and as we were concerned our baths will impact the rest of the bedroom, so we both did a quick shower and did not wash our hair (terrible given that we were supposed to be on a holiday). By then, my mom and I were both exhausted and had no energy to switch rooms or find another area to bath. We didn’t want to kick up a big fuss as it was a small group of us and I don’t think the crew can do much about the unlevel flooring on the spot.
3. Because the room was tilted to one side, we also had to switch our sleeping positions; it was hilarious. Instead of our heads at where they should be, we rotated to have our heads at the foot of the bed as it was on the higher angle.
4. The fixtures in the room were not maintained. The bathroom mirror cabinet bar came loose as the screw fell off.
5. The door handle of the cabinet in the room was missing and it was also dusty.

1. For room 401 where my cousin was staying, her shower handle came off and the smell was stronger coming from the bathroom when I went into her room. She is someone who is very tolerant and did not say that she enjoyed her stay.

My main disappointment was thus the rooms. We gave feedback to both Royal Palace staff and tour agency TransViet. TransViet was responsive and they gave us a small refund of USD10/pax as a form of compensation. So the service attitude is impeccable.

Nonetheless, the overall junkboat cruise seemed to be worn out and not well maintained.

Also note that while meals were included in the package, all beverages, including mineral bottled water, cost extra money. (except for the 2 small complimentary mineral water).

While there was WiFi during the evening, I did not use it but I heard from other passengers that it was quite patchy.

In terms of activities which are included in the package but optional, they brought us to:
-one island for kayaking / visit a pearl jewellery gift shop (1 hour)
-one island for swimming / climbing up quite a number of steps to a hill top pavilion (1 hour)
-next day early morning to surprise cave with steps and walking involved (1 hour)

They also provide a simple demo on making spring rolls & tai chi exercise.

Given the state of the rooms, I find it hard to highly recommend anyone to take this particular cruise vessel. But on account of the excellent crew and their helpful attitude to assist my mom to board and alight the boat and junkboat safely, I have given it a rating of 3 stars.

I highly recommend choosing this boat for your Halong Bay experience. Alex, Noi and the team were wonderful. They made sure all needs were met and the food was perfect. We received an upgraded room and it was awesome...just right for my wife, daughter and I. The excursions were also super fun.

We did the three day two night tour with a night on bungalow island. The food on the trip is amazing, the most food I have eaten over our whole trip. We loved all the excursions and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Would definitely recommend this trip to friends :) drinks aren't included but we found that they weren't over priced.

Our guide picked us up from our hotel and told us we had been upgraded to a more expensive boat than we had booked - a new addition to the company's fleet (8 months old) so they were running a promo - so was off to a solid start. Really friendly and funny tour guide (David) with very good English. The boat itself was amazing - very nice, clean and modern with all the trimmings, we stayed in a double room which was v comfortable and nicely prepared, staff were extremely polite and helpful, the service was excellent and food was even better, a 7 course lunch and dinner of (slightly westernised) Vietnamese cuisine. Had the chance to kayak around several islands, swim and jump off the boat (the cruise manager leading the charge!) and the 'surprising cave' was interesting but very busy. All in all amazing few days!

Enjoyed our 2 days 1 night cruise. Mr Lucky was friendly and accommodative to all passager needs. Food was plentiful and delicious. We need to pay for drinks. Bring your own mineral water as 2 bottles were provided per cabin.
