Stayed on the Royal Palace cruise for 2D1N, hosted by Mr Lucky and Manager Alex. Rooms were beautiful and had an old charm. Crew did everything to ensure we had a great time. Mr Lucky was very knowledgable and helped us arrange a bus to Ninh Binh back due to our change of plans. Overall a fantastic experience. Thank you!!!

Summary: Excellent crew service but poor condition of rooms on level 3. My elderly mother with walking difficulties, my cousin and I stayed in 2 rooms in the Royal Palace junkboat cruise overnight (2D1N). Halong Bay was a picturesque place but we didn’t enjoy our room on the junkboat cruise. The cruise was arranged as part of a 5D4N tour by a travel agency in Singapore so I’m not sure how much of it was paid to Royal Palace. The junkboat is made up of 3 small levels with around 14 rooms in total, in addition to a main dining area (on 2nd level) and the upper deck (on 3rd level). To get to the junkboat, we took a 3.5 hour bus ride from Hanoi to the pier. We had to transfer to a small boat which will then bring you to the junkboat cruise. In these instances, there isn’t any proper docking area, the process of crossing over to the boat intimidated my mother. The tour guide and helpers from the cruise were on hand to help so it felt safer and we were very grateful for that. The Royal Palace was supposed to be in a “4-star” category but we were disappointed with the rooms they assigned us. They actually said they gave us better rooms on the 3rd level, the “Deluxe Room” (406 and 401). The rooms came with basic toiletries and towels. Starting with room 406: 1. There was an unpleasant foul smell which was a mix of sewage plus mould, I’m not sure how to describe it. The tour guide explained it was because they repaint the boat frequently so he attributed the smell to the paint. But what was obvious was that there was a lingering (unpleasant) smell & it kept me up all night. 2. The structure of the room seemed to have deteriorated over time, so the room is not level. The whole room seems to be tilted to one side. As a result, when i started to bath, the water does not flow to the standing shower area drainage area but flooded out to the rest of the shower area. I will attach a photo to show this. We only found out at night after the day of activities and as we were concerned our baths will impact the rest of the bedroom, so we both did a quick shower and did not wash our hair (terrible given that we were supposed to be on a holiday). By then, my mom and I were both exhausted and had no energy to switch rooms or find another area to bath. We didn’t want to kick up a big fuss as it was a small group of us and I don’t think the crew can do much about the unlevel flooring on the spot. 3. Because the room was tilted to one side, we also had to switch our sleeping positions; it was hilarious. Instead of our heads at where they should be, we rotated to have our heads at the foot of the bed as it was on the higher angle. 4. The fixtures in the room were not maintained. The bathroom mirror cabinet bar came loose as the screw fell off. 5. The door handle of the cabinet in the room was missing and it was also dusty. 1. For room 401 where my cousin was staying, her shower handle came off and the smell was stronger coming from the bathroom when I went into her room. She is someone who is very tolerant and did not say that she enjoyed her stay. My main disappointment was thus the rooms. We gave feedback to both Royal Palace staff and tour agency TransViet. TransViet was responsive and they gave us a small refund of USD10/pax as a form of compensation. So the service attitude is impeccable. Nonetheless, the overall junkboat cruise seemed to be worn out and not well maintained. Also note that while meals were included in the package, all beverages, including mineral bottled water, cost extra money. (except for the 2 small complimentary mineral water). While there was WiFi during the evening, I did not use it but I heard from other passengers that it was quite patchy. In terms of activities which are included in the package but optional, they brought us to: -one island for kayaking / visit a pearl jewellery gift shop (1 hour) -one island for swimming / climbing up quite a number of steps to a hill top pavilion (1 hour) -next day early morning to surprise cave with steps and walking involved (1 hour) They also provide a simple demo on making spring rolls & tai chi exercise. Given the state of the rooms, I find it hard to highly recommend anyone to take this particular cruise vessel. But on account of the excellent crew and their helpful attitude to assist my mom to board and alight the boat and junkboat safely, I have given it a rating of 3 stars.

Enjoyed our 2 days 1 night cruise. Mr Lucky was friendly and accommodative to all passager needs. Food was plentiful and delicious. We need to pay for drinks. Bring your own mineral water as 2 bottles were provided per cabin.
