An old fishing lodge at Hoàn Kiêm Lake ...
Jan 2020
At the "Old Quarter" of Hanoi, at the center of "Hoán Kiêm" - the "Lake of the Restored Sword", on a small islet, stands "Tháp Rùa", the famous "Turtle Tower", also known as "Tortoise Tower". It was built around the 14th century, as a fishing lodge for King Lê Thánk Tông. The three-story tower was never finished and cannot be accessed directly by the public. As it is beautifully lit, it is best pictured in the evenings from the lake's shore. May "Kim Qim", the "Golden Turtle God" protect your Hanoi's journey. Enjoy!

Beautiful Icon of Ha Noi With Interesting History
Mar 2019
Also known as "Turtle Tower", this lovely Temple was built in 1886, on the former site of Ta Vong Temple from the 17th or 18th century. Erected to commemorate Le Loi, later Emperor, who is regarded as one of the greatest national heroes of Vietnam, this Temple shines like a jewel when illuminated at dark. Leading the freedom movement, Lo Lie and his fighters liberated his people from the Chinese Ming army, who occupied Vietnam, waging battles from 1418-1426, when he successfully delivered his beloved people to freedom. While boating on "Luc Thuy" or "Green Water Lake", a fisherman "caught" the sword inscribed with the words "Thuan Thien" or "The Will of Heaven" which was presented to the Emperor to assist in the ultimate Ming defeat. Following the victory, while boating on the lake, a giant golden turtle surfaced from the water, requesting the sword be returned to the Dragon King. The Lake was renamed "Hoan Kiem Lake" or "The Lake of Returned Sword" either when the sword was graciously returned by the Emperor or taken by the giant golden turtle. In 1886 a (traitor) musician received permission from the French government to erect this beautiful monument, where he secretly laid his father to rest. The body was later removed. Now just the turtles bask in the sun along the shores of the little island. So much additional history to read about.

Thap Rua Tower is also known as Turtle Tower or Tortoise Tower and is situated in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake. You can walk around the lake and see Thap Rua Tower from all sides. Looks better at night when illuminated.

Visually very nice

Located in the muddle of the lake in the heart of the city it’s probably most photographed structure in the area.

You can walk around lake and see Thap Rua Tower from all sides.

It’s certainly more impressive at night all lit up, you can’t get to the tower soo see it from the pavement from edge of lake.

Surrounding area nice and safe, kept clean but the water is very dirty looking.

Turtle Tower

Thap Rua Tower is also known as Turtle Tower or Tortoise Tower and is situated in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake. There is no way of reaching it, but can be seen anywhere around the lake. Look up the legend of Turtle Tower, as it is more interesting than the tower itself.

Best viewed at night.

Situated in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake and constructed in 1886, Thap Rua Tower, also known as theTurtle Tower, commemorates a local Vietnamese folk hero, Le Loi, who was instrumental in freeing the Vietnamese from Chinese forces back in 1425. To be honest it’s not much to look at during the day but comes into its own after dark when it is illuminated with a golden colour scheme providing a good night-time photo opportunity of the lake and tower with the lights of Hanoi’s buildings behind.

Photo opportunity

You can not get to the tower. Didn’t even see a boat, but it is a great photo opportunity and you can see it from all around the lake.

Needs some urgent restoration and cleaning up
Oct 2019
Thap Rua Tower, in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake, looks very tatty these days, which is a shame as it's in such a prominent position.

Good to photograph, but looks tattier the more you zoom in.

A stark contrast to the completely restored Huc Bridge area in the northern part of the lake.

Ancient tower in the Hoan Kiem lake
Jul 2019
This is a small but quite ancient tower located in the middle of the lake. There's no bridge to access it, so you can only see it from the edge of the lake. This is a good example of where a better camera than that available in an iphone6 would be useful.
