We had a wonderful two day cruise on lan ha Bay organised through David at Hanoi Eco Tours. Our guide Tutu was very friendly and did a great job at organising our travel and activities. We especially enjoyed the kayaking trip and visiting the village on bikes. Tai chi at dawn on the top deck was also a lovely experience. While the weather was a bit chilly we still got some great views. We travelled on La Mignonne boat which had excellent rooms, superb and wonderfully presented food, and lovely staff.

David aka Nam is a very helpful and nice guide, always looking for best solutions. Fluent in English, he has a great knowledge and understanding of his country. Responsive and transparent, he made our trip to Cat Ba Bay a successful story, all in line with our expectations and agreements.

We had a lovely morning with a Vietnamese family in their home. They gave us a warm welcome into their home with tea and cookies. We helped prepare spring rolls and then all sat down for lunch with some local delicacies. Also had chicken, beef and noodles. We then walked to the local temple and drank tea with the local care takers of the temple. Lovely family and they made us feel welcome.

Wow!! Everyone was telling us with one free day in Hanoi that we should definitely head to Ha Long Bay.... but we knew there must be a more intimate and socially-responsible experience out there... And we found it!!! My goodness this was the most authentic, eco, quirky and exhilarating day! - After a 'hard' day's work planting rice and ploughing the field, we cooked, ate and drank far too much rice wine together with the farming family. And then it was time for a little cycle around the village and an epic Karaoke session! David made everything completely hassle-free for us by picking up and dropping us off at our hotel, and even providing us with clothes for getting down and dirty in the rice paddies! He patiently answered and translated all our questions, and together with ended the day belting out 'Hey Jude' at Karaoke! Thank you David and Hanoi Eco Tour for a truly memorable experience!

We did the Fishing Life tour with David of Hanoi Eco Tour and it was definitely our favorite thing that we did on our trip! David also helped us organize our hotel in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay Tours, but by far the highlight was the fishing trip. We traveled about 45 minutes outside of Hanoi and from there met a family from the village who showed us how they catch fish in their ponds - we were even able to eat the larger fish from the second pond for lunch :) The lunch was prepared at a local house and we again were more than welcome to help or just watch. The meal was amazing and was followed up by a cycling trip around the village, farms and rice paddies. Overall, it was a great cultural and learning experience. Hanoi Eco Tours provides a unique and one of a kind experience that you will not find with many other tour companies (if any!). We had a fantastic time and would recommend Hanoi Eco Tours and David to anyone who travels to Vietnam!

Recently my wife and I took a vacation to Vietnam and Cambodia for a riverboat cruise and the Angkor Wat Temples. Because of the airfare cost of traveling from the U.S. to Europe or Asia, we normally extend our trip to include pre and/or post days there. While planning our pre and post itinerary, I found a company called, “Hanoi Eco Tour” on TripAdvisor. Since they had good reviews I contacted them to see what they had to offer. In my initial email I listed the things that the riverboat cruise company would show us in Hanoi and asked if they could provide three days of additional sightseeing. I gave them some information of our ages (over 60) and physical conditions (pretty good.) I was surprised at the speed with which I received a response from “David” who is the Sales and Marketing Manager. He provided a three day schedule which ensured that we would not overlap our previous sightseeing and also would take us to some unique places. We made a few minor changes, no bicycle riding for us, David quoted us a cost. They asked that we make a deposit with normal refund policies. Prior to arriving in Hanoi we kept in touch with David with a few questions and to confirm meeting arrangements.
On the first day of our tour, we were met in our hotel reception area by none other than David who was going to be our guide. He also had a driver so that he could concentrate on the tour. We drove to Trang An Ecological site and got on a small rowboat with David and for 2 hours we were rowed around the site through 11 caves. As this site appeared to be popular with Asians; we passed several other boats with 6-8 people in them. While we couldn’t speak the language other than Xin Chao (Hello) and Cảm On Bạn (Thank You); everyone we saw was so friendly and there were several offers of food and drink. After lunch at a local restaurant, our first time eating mountain goat which is a specialty in the area, we visited Hoa Lu which is one of the oldest capitals in Vietnam which dates to 968 – 1009 AD. In addition to two temples, there were hibiscus gardens, ponds and many beautiful smelling plants. David’s knowledge of Vietnamese history, their culture and the various religions was exceptional. After returning to Hanoi and time at our hotel for a small rest and change of clothes; we were picked up again and taken to a family style restaurant for dinner. Lunch and dinner was included each day with the tour. While David didn’t join us for dinner; he was always nearby to ensure everything was to our liking or if we had questions. Both meals this day were very good and more than we would normally have eaten. The wine that we ordered was not included with the meal but was very reasonable priced.
The second day, we were again picked up in the morning at a reasonable time and traveled west of Hanoi to a very old agricultural village to see farming life up close. During our walk around the village and the adjacent fields/rice paddies we were able to see close up all of the stages of growing rice and other produce. Many of the homes we passed were over a hundred years old. We ate lunch at a private home which was over 400 years old. The owner was a journalist and his wife prepared private lunches to supplement their income. The house, which was simple but beautiful, had been in his family for several centuries. After lunch and pictures with our hostess; we walked some more of the villages. Everywhere we went, everyone would greet us and the children would smile and wave. We returned to Hanoi in the late afternoon for another short rest and then dinner. Another great meal during which included “butter clams” which are clams in their shells cooked in a buttery sauce. This was an exceptionally good dish.
On our third day, we were taken first to a village which specialized in the design and manufacturing of ceramics. Here we received a personal tour of one of the businesses which showed us the total process from initial design, clay processing, construction (often by hand), decorating and final firings of the pieces. On some of the floors we were allowed to take photos but on others we were not for propriety reasons. We then journeyed to another small artesian village which specialized in wood block carvings which are used for making prints on rice paper. After a demonstration of the process; the artist showed us a collection of his specialties. After asking about pricing, we had to buy several. We then had lunch in the artist’s studio. I need to mention that in Vietnam and Cambodia, the first floor of a home is used as a business run by the family and the floors above are living quarters for the family which can consist of several generations. So it is not unusual to have eating facilities in or near the business. As on the previous two days, we returned to Hanoi in the afternoon, got a small rest and then off for our final dinner. While returning in the afternoon, David had asked about our previous meals and any favorites we may have had and other likes/dislikes. That night we sat down to an excellent dinner (by this, I don’t mean to diminish any of our previous meals as they were all very good) which was a wonderful way to close out our time with David and Hanoi Eco Tours. Our time during these three days far exceeded our expectations. We found David and Hanoi Eco Tours to be excellent guides and hosts to their country. The schedule and places we visited were very well timed and we didn’t feel rushed like you occasionally do on larger tours. I think that Hanoi Eco Tours succeeded in their goal of taking you to the “paths less traveled by other tourists”. We were never allowed to want for anything and all at a very reasonable cost. I can’t recommend David and Hanoi Eco Tour highly enough.

We had a most enjoyable day with David (Nam) to the Ancient Village of Duong Lam. It was really great to experience the village life and surrounding countryside by bicycle at a leisurely pace. David was most knowledgeable, entertaining and enthusiastic. Lunch at a village home was plentiful and very tasty. I would certainly recommend this tour for anyone wanting to get out of the city for a day walking, cycling and taking in local life. I wish Hanoi Eco Tours continued success in providing alternative experiences in the tourist industry.

My girlfriend and I were looking for an opportunity to escape the business of our lives in Hanoi with a day trip to the countryside. David took us on an super and memorable day tour of the ancient Duong Lam Village. We were picked up in the morning from our apartment and driven to the village about an hour or so from Hanoi. David's enthusiasm is infectious an right from the start we enjoyed all the facts and knowledge he has on every corner of the village. We had lunch at one of the oldest houses in the village, hosted by the owners themselves. The food was amazing and they even catered us with vegetarian options. We then went on a bike ride through the country side visiting local temples. We had a lot of fun and recommend this day trip to anyone looking for an authentic rural and historical learning experience. We look forward to joining other Hanoi Eco Tour trips in the future.

This was one our best days in Vietnam. David took great care of us. We were transported by a private car from our hotel to a home about 20-30 min outside of Hanoi. There we learned about net fishing. We caught about 10 fish. After fishing we had a meal prepared for us by the fisherman's wife. The house was very clean and inviting. We felt very much at home and we were well looked after. We also enjoyed riding bicycles around the town, away from the hustle an bustle of Hanoi. We enjoyed seeing all of the gardens and produce growing. Everything was well organized and comfortable. We had a great time and we would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Hanoi. Well worth the time and money. David was awesome! HANOI ECO TOURS is wonderful addition to any trip.

We took this excursion a few days ago with Nam as our tour guide. A visit to this fascinating village should not be missed, and Nan’s knowledge and enthusiasm made it just perfect. Seeing village life is not to be missed. As amazing as the temples and sites were, the lunch in a quaint local spot was just so amazingly good. Honestly the best pork I’ve ever had and the spring rolls were unmatched as well. Cannot recommend Hanoi Eco Tours any more highly.
