*review for a tour done in Aug 2018*

Booked the French Quarter walking tour and my guide was a enthusiastic and nice college student by the name of Hoang. Hoang, if you are reading this, sorry for the late review!

He picked me up from my hotel and he was super punctual. He took me to see the preserved turtle at Hoan Kiem Lake, a fountain at the French Quarter, a famous ice cream shop near the lake and we even stopped for dessert nearby my hotel. During the tour, Hoang took the time to explain the history of the sites we visited.

We were supposed to see a few more sights but the heat took a toll on me and we ended up parting ways with a few selfies taken. Really enjoyed my tour and have recommended this to my friends!

We I always love using free walking tours in any city we travel to and Hanoi free walking tours exceeded our expectations. First, we did the Old Quarter walking tour which was fantastic, but unfortunately forgot to write down our tour guides name. We then did the Prison tour with Ted who was amazing! He was very knowledgeable and not afraid to tell us the Vietnamese side of the war even though we were Americans, which was exactly what we wanted to learn. We finished up with an unbelievable experience at the Ho Chi Minh Complex with Nina. Nina also altered the tour to fit our needs taking us to the War Museum since it was closed the previous day with Ted. Nina's English was the best out of all the guides we had and she was extremely knowledgeable about the sites. I would highly recommend Hanoi Free Walking Tours!

We met Hien and Tu promptly at our Hotel just south of the Old Quarter. Hien was the experienced hand, Tu was in training. We thought they were both just wonderful. The first meal we had was the famous Bun Cha (didn't know it was a famous Hanoi dish until we ate it and heard about it from Hien). Great little restaurant, upstairs, little chairs, sharing Bun Cha. Loved it. Then we went onto another restaurant for slightly different, spring rolls and other assorted dishes. Then we went to the back of this little place, not really a restaurant in the true sense of the word, but the deserts were just awesome. I ate so many I couldn't move and I was full before we got there. We went past the big church with the Xmas tree and took photos. Hien and Tu also happily shared their stories and told us about temple etiquette, how the streets are named in Hanoi, just lots of great little facts. We all just had the best night. If you have an open mind, eat most things and happy to dive in, just book these guys. It gives you confidence in approaching the city so I'd do it on your first day as we did. Thankyou Hien and Tu.

We joined a free private walking tour of the Old Quarters at 14:00 on 9 January. When we made the booking we were asked if we would like to have two travel guides. As it’s only two of us we said one would be enough. The company representative confirmed in writing that it would be one guide.
When we arrived at the meeting point our guide Ms Nhi, a nice mature lady, presented to us a young man and asked if he could join to practice his English. We gladly said yes. Then Ms Nhi said the young man would be our guide and she would assist.
The young man was the rudest Vietnamese we have encountered in our three week journey in this lovely country. He was churlish and never did any tour guiding. Ms Nhi who was obviously much more experienced did most of the explanation. When she was talking the young man made all kinds of funny gestures and rolled his eyes. And when we asked him something he would mumble a few words and said,” I don’t know.” impatiently.
He acted like he really didn’t want to be with us. Ten minutes into the tour we had to say we wanted no more of it when he suddenly started to yell angrily at Ms Nhi.
Ms Nhi then asked if she could guide us on her own. We agreed. She was a good, professional guide and we enjoyed the rest of the tour.

I think the company should not impose a guide on clients when it has agreed to send just one guide. More importantly, they should have screened their student guides more rigorously and provide better training both on substance and manners.
It is a “ free” walking tour but it still matters to ensure a nice, informative experience for visitors.
Maybe we were just unfortunate. Hope this will be useful to the company as well as other visitors.

Hi there, We are so sorry for this unpleasant experience of your tour in Hanoi. However, there are some misunderstandings here since our club doesn't have any member named Nhi. Besides, we have never arranged 2 guides for one tour without the guests' permission. Could you please check it again because there are some clubs providing free tours around Hanoi have the name quite similar to us? If possible, please send us an email to info@hanoifreewalkingtours.com so that we can confirm your information again. Wishing all the best for you! Thank you once again! Today, Linh was our guide through Hanoi Old Quarter and she was a great host. She showed us some hidden gems such as the apartment where Ho Chi Minh lived for short time before he signed the declaration of independence or the traditional house. I definitely recommend booking a tour with Hanoi Free Walking tours if you want to discover the city from a local.

I arrived into hanoi around 3pm. I contacted this tour and asked for last minute availability for my 3 night stay. Within 2 hours, I was matched for a food tour the same evening along with other tour options for my stay here. Leo was our food tour guide. He was polite, punctual, and very courteous the entire time. He took us for rice paper wrapped pork, then soft noodle wrap with meat and another with medium poached egg, then a beef noodle salad followed by sweet soup pudding dessert. Leo was great at sharing all our food given our appetites were very small. Would highly recommend seeking out this hanoi free walking tour to learn more about Vietnamese culture and aspirations of lovely young tour guide we met. Can't wait to do another tour with HFWT!

Kem was passionate in her introduction to the places she brought us to during the walking tour. We learnt about Hanoi and Vietnam’s history more than the last 3 days that we had spent in the city. Highly recommend going on a walking tour with a local to learn if you’re keen on more than just food and looking at the scenery this beautiful country has to offer!

Went for the war history tour on 7/8/2022 with Truong (Andy) and Yam - this involved a tour at Vietnam Military History Museum and Hoa Lo Prison. The tour itself was informative and gave us a good overview on the war history of Vietnam - which was heartbreaking but very enlightening. We learnt so much about the hardships, bravery and beliefs of Vietnamese people of the past (and how it influenced the present). The tour included our guides sharing with us various interesting facts, folk legends/stories and their modern views on some of these events as well. They were also very kind, warm and sincere people in general, and we felt very welcomed and taken care of. Thankful to have became friends with them through this tour. :) I certainly recommend this tour to anyone keen to understand Vietnamese history, and at the same time learn and connect with locals.

Thu Huyen and Hai Minh were great guides around the Old Quarter in Hanoi. They were very knowledgeable of all of the sights and shared a lot of cultural insight from a local perspective which was great! We got to try coconut coffee at Cong Cafe which was delicious and refreshing in the hot weather and learnt a lot about the city. Definitely recommend as a first day orientation tour when you arrive in Hanoi!

Our tour guide, Minh Thu, did an excellent job in introducing Hanoi to us. The 3 hours tour was both insightful and interesting. It was nice to learn about Hanoi and its history from the perspective of a local and at no cost at all!

Highly recommend to those who want to learn more about the city and its heritage and don't mind to walking through the bustling streets.

Will definitely take up another tour when I'm back the next time!
