Joe knows the roads. We had an excellent 12 day trip from North to South Vietnam. It was just my wife , myself and daughter. Highly Recommend his professionalism, his knowledge of the area and his ability to find excellent Vietnamese coffee at 7 AM.I would recommend his services if you want to see the real Vietnam with friendly and competent staff. I will use his services again I'm sure.

Our tour, A ride to remember (20thMarch 2023 – 4thApril 2023), I was privileged to organize a bike tour to the Mountains of North Vietnam, a ride of 550 kilometers and climbing 8,000 meter's. We were a group of 12 (average age 73), starting in Hanoi we cycled to Sapa on the Chinese border and then followed a western route through Villages and spectacular scenery back to Hanoi. Joe Nguyen the owner was fantastic, the itinerary, bikes, accommodation, food, and refreshments nothing was too much trouble. Overnight Joe would review how the group was travelling and adjust the following days ride to meet our changing needs, we were never short of adventure, each day an exciting experience from the people we met in the different villages to the spectacular scenery. We had a crew of 7 looking after us, a truck and 2 small buses and were treated like royalty. This is our second time with Joe and this trip got even better than the first, we are now planning a 3rd trip this time Hanoi to Saigon via Back Roads. Best value holiday ever and Joe makes planning so easy I have no hesitation in recommending Marco Polo Biking Vietnam for your next cycling holiday.

My family of 4 (husband and 2 teenage boys aged 12 and 15) spent 5 days on a mountain bike trip with Marco Polo Travel Vietnam. The organisation and communication prior to and during the bike ride was excellent. We had to alter the scheduled itinerary each day to manage the distance and terrain and Joe our tour guide was incredibly flexible providing us with a range of trails and options to suit our physical abilities. He and his team knew the area, trails and roads incredibly well. We had a bike tour guide called Anne ride who rode at the front with us every day and was fantastic and another guide at the back on a motorbike to make sure we went the correct way and remained safe and could access first aid if there were any accidents or problems (there weren’t)! This trip was a once in a lifetime experience for our family. We highly recommend Marco Polo Travel.

My husband and I experienced this tour in May 2012. It took us from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City mainly along the inland Ho Chi Minh Trail. Usually, these tours are organised for larger groups, but although there weren't other customers, the company agreed to do it just for the two of us.
Basically, we had to cycle from one village or city to another on quite long stages (more than 100 km). We weren't up to this, however, since the heat of May made it quite difficult to cycle past noon. So we tok the bikes in the morning and finished each day's trip in the comfortable air-con van. The company provided us with a van and its driver, (plus an English-speaking guide for the first Northern half of the trip to help us communicate with local people; down South, English and French are commonly spoken). Thus we had continuous assistance, since the van was always in a range of 10 km from us: the driver would indicate us the right way at crossroads, fill up our water bottles with complimentary mineral water, prepare refreshments every 90mn with fresh and dried fruit and wet towels. They also looked after the maintenance of the bikes - which were very good machines, by the way.On top of this, smiles and encouraging words, and extreme kindness.
Our route took us through areas which are not commonly visited by tourists; indeed, we met very few Westerners before Hue. Instead, we encountered many local people: farmers back from their fields, women spreading rice on the roadside to make it dry, schoolchildren, young and old people on motorbikes. All very local and so friendly! The landscapes were stunning too; very different from one day to the next, with the greenest rice paddies in the world, complete with workers in conical hats and their buffaloes; colorful villages; steep mountains; pristine beaches; beautiful pagodas and imperial palaces; delightful old towns and impressive new cities.
We were accommodated at local hotels. The first ones in the northern part of the trip, were basic but very comfortable places, with large rooms and ensuite bathrooms and air-conditioning. From Phong Nha on, and in Hanoi, all our hotels were 3- and 4-star places, on a par with what tourists expect to find in any city, anywhere in the world.
Food in Vietnam is just incredible: available anywhere, and especially enjoyable in those little street-side joints; cooked on the spot, you can be sure it's fresh; and the choice is endless. Vietnamese cuisine is very healthy, using little fats and sugars; just what we needed to be well fueled but not too full for our biking days. On top of this, it is utterly inexpensive.
All the people who looked after us were very reliable: never late, always able to communicate using a third person if they could not speak french or English; very helpful without being intrusive. Just perfect.
Our tour included a junk excursion in Halong Bay and a flight from Nha Trang to Saigon. Everything wad perfectly organised by Mr Joe in Hanoi, who was always available for help or information, and who made sure to keep in touch with us to check if everything was fine.
Well, everything WAS fine, so much so that we want to go to Vietnam again in February 2013, to complete another cycling trip in a different region. Maybe the Mekong Delta, or further on, to Thailand. We can't wait to discover the itineraries Mr Joe will send us.
My husband and I often choose to travel by bike: we experienced this in California, New Zealand and Tasmania and we can compare the services provided by the companies who sold us those tours. We have always been very pleased with what we got, but I must say this tour in Vietnam has exceeded all our expectations. It is really the best cycling tour we've had so far?So, I warmly recommend anyone who likes cycling, even moderately so, to try one of the many tours offered by Marco Polo Company. Cycling is a great way to discover a country at a tranquil pace, allowing one to interact more closely with local people. You'll find a very professional organisation, a very wide range of options, and unbeatable prices.

My husband, daughter(27) and I set out on this 7 day trip in early May. It was very easy to organise online before we arrived in Vietnam. Everything went very smoothly from the moment we were collected in Hanoi. We drove North to Ba Be Lake where we stayed the night and then on to near the border with China where we started trekking between the villages, staying in home stays along the way. We loved every minute of this. We were well looked after by our Guides, Joe (from Marco Polo) and Chuong ( local govt guide). We had expected to carry our own packs and were surprised to find that they were carried for us on motorbikes by the same men who would cook for us. It was a welcome surprise as it was quite hot and we were glad not to have the extra weight. Being vegetarians we were very pleased with the effort to accommodate our food needs, which was done very well. Joe is a history graduate and we learnt so much about Vietnam and its history. It was really good to stay in the houses of locals, meet people and to actually be off the beaten track. Chuong had huge local knowledge of the plants, animals and way of life. What a great team they were. The terrain was roughly like home, NZ, with hills and valleys with nothing very hard but you would need to be a walker to enjoy this. Be prepared for some rudimentary bathrooms, or lack of, but that is how people live here, don't let it put you off as we highly recommend both this trek and Marco Polo adventures.

Our 5 day bicycle tour in the Mekong Delta, of around 30 miles per day, during late November exceeded all our expectations. Firstly, Joe was so responsive and helpful in designing the perfect trip for the 2 of us. We had a fabulous bike guide whose name is Long and I would definitely ask Joe if Long is available. We had so many different experiences on boats, bridges, islands, villages and interacting with the Vietnamese people. The accommodations and food were all excellent. It was simple perfect in every possible way.

We had a nice day biking through the mostly beautiful but hardly spectacular countryside/suburbs outside of Hanoi and a tasty meal in a pretty village. But the day did not merit the huge price we paid -- $125 USD per person for a total of $250 for 7 hours (including driving and lunch). This is far more expensive than other tours in Hanoi.

We decided to shell out the money because of the stellar reviews here on Tripadvisor. But it didn't live up to expectations. First of all, what was advertised as a full day tour was really just 2-3 hours of biking followed by lunch ($2 for beer not included). It also wasn't really a tour -- our tour guide, while friendly, did not attempt to provide us with any insight into the areas we were seeing. His main function was to lead the way.

All in all, a fun day, but probably not worth the money.

Decided to sign up with Joe for a 1 day MTBiking after reading the positive reviews.

Location was at Hoa Binh, covering village trails, and some off road trails. Unfortunately, due to the July heat, around 40 C or 104 F, we had to cut short our ride as I was overheating. Overall, it was still a good ride with Joe leading the way.

Bike used was a Cannondale Scaple, lefty, which I thought could have been much better maintained. But hey, this is a rental bike, so don't expect too high a standard. It gets the job done.

Joe hospitality was fantastic, we started off with Pho for breakfast before heading to our start point which was about 1hr 40 mins away. Lunch was at a town where we had local fare, which I personally requested and Joe obliged.

I will recommend Joe if you ever want to do MTbiking in Hanoi. But please, don't do it in July.
