We have travelled to lots of different countries and have done many food tours but we can honestly say that the street food tour with ‘ Flavours of Hanoi’ was the best one yet!

Joe met us at the hotel and asked us if there were any key things that we didn’t want to miss. He then took us on a walking tour of the old quarter, trying incredible examples of local food from expertly selected vendors. Whilst walking he taught us all about the history of the area (and about the history of Vietnam in general)-we learnt so much!
The food was absolutely delicious and the selection of places was amazing!

We honestly could not have asked for a better experience and would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone visiting the city.

When we booked this tour we had hoped for the chance to try some new foods and to explore parts of Hanoi we might not have been able to find ourselves. What we did not expect, however, was to be taken on a journey through space and time, forging new friendships and life long memories through the bustling streets of the city through the eyes of a local. Buffalo joe was so passionate about not only the food of Hanoi, but the stories that the local vendors had to offer, giving us a peek into the daily life in the south. I really couldn’t recommend this tour enough if you want to get to know the real Hanoi.

Our tour of Hanoi with Joe was one of the highlights of our trip to Vietnam. He took us to eat at places we couldn’t have stumbled upon ourselves. The food was incredible and Joe also knew the stories of the families running the restaurants, which were eye opening and often funny. A woman famous for a fried sweet she invented who had to put up with several imitators, or ‘fakes’ as Joe called them, who set up shops all around her. Joe was also great at tailoring the tour to our own interests and skipping the common dishes we’d already tried. Along the tour we learned about Vietnam’s history, and were shown sides to Hanoi was tourists would miss, such as the flats behind shop fronts that often house multiple families. We can’t recommend this tour highly enough, for foodies, and culture lovers alike.

Joe is an amazing guide. We travelled as three in Jan 2024 to Hanoi and took part in his fabulous street food tour. We wandered through the dark alleys of Hanoi eating the best of family prepared meals, experiencing not only the wonder of Vietnamese food but also getting a window into the culture of this very special place.

Joe tailors his tour to your interests and happily adds in stops on the fly, or detours to places of interest. His tour isn’t just educational it’s also a lot of fun - Joe has a unique sense of humour and we laughed a lot over the three hours.

If you do one thing in Hanoi - do this tour. Cannot recommend highly enough - one of the best things we did on our trip to SE Asia.

Flavours of Hanoi
This is a fabulous way to explore the local-food street -life of the Old Quarter. We were a group of 5 who were delighted by the tour which began with Hanoi’s famous egg coffee and ended with the most delicious Bun Cha (roast pork noodle soup.) Joe was an excellent guide who took us through the alleyways and byways of the Old quarter and explained the history behind the street food scene as well as the cramped housing and laneway economics. We got to sample many traditional dishes including freshwater crab, new season rice, moon cakes, ice cream and much much more. We couldn’t recommend this tour more -it is a must do. It opened our eyes and our stomachs to Hanoi.

We went on a terrific street food tour with Buffalo Joe. The food was all fantastic, from the bun cha to the bahn mi to the mien tron, just to mention a few of the many dishes we tried. But just as special as the delicious food was the cultural experience, learning about the wonderful community and the people that come together to bring this vibrant part of the city to life. Joe’s strong relationships with the cooks and street food vendors adds a special touch to the tour. We even went through back alleys that wind behind the shops, to see where the people live. Book your tour. You will love it!

This tour is amazing. Buffalo Joe will introduce you to the amazing food and culture of the Old Quarter. While the food is spectacular, the real fun is learning all about life in Hanoi from Joe. Our trip included going into a house and talking to a family about their life in Hanoi. I recommend this tour for anyone who really wants to experience the Old Quarter. We’ve had multiple tour guides across Vietnam and Joe was the best!

my primary reason for visiting Hanoi was to get some great Vietnamese food, and Flavors of Hanoi definitely helped me out. they were very accommodating of my last minute booking, and my guide Trang not only knew about the food and the neighborhood, I could tell she had a passion for food and enjoyed sharing that passion with others, which made my tour that much more enjoyable. Flavors of Hanoi even gave me recs for additional food items I wanted to try that we didn't get to on our tour! highly recommend booking with them.

Myself and my husband did a good tour with Buffalo Joe! He was so friendly, a great communicator to organise the tour and punctual! He brought us to many amazing food places that we would never have been able to find or know of eat there without him. He gave us history along the way of the city and of Vietnam generally. We met a family friend of his also and got to see the French colonial style house as result. Would highly recommend Joe to anyone who goes to Hanoi!

Our street food crawl of the old city with Joe was fantastic! He started out by getting to know more about us, our interests and the foods we had experienced so he could tailor the tour accordingly. The food could not have been better - amazing baby clams, sticky rice cakes, noodle soup with beef, soup with fried fish, and a wonderful example of chicken done 2 ways down a narrow alleyway, ending with 4 tapioca desserts at Loc Tai House. All along the way Joe spoke about the changing demographics of the Old Quarter, and the socioeconomic conditions connected to this history. Definitely book a trip with Joe!
