About
Nestled in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, this narrow alley attracts travelers hoping to snap a picture on the active train track, and even catch a train whizz by! This alley is actually a residential area—many locals have converted their houses into quaint little cafes where you can sip on traditional egg coffee while waiting for the train to pass by—which happens a handful of times throughout the day. Be careful though, as the street can get really busy. Explore Train Street and other backstreets and alleyways of Hanoi on a tour with a local guide. They'll help you take photos, too! – Tripadvisor

    Train thrills
An amazing experience. If you go the Google maps part then there are security guards to turn you away. However there are plenty of coffee shops offering to take you to the back to experience train street. OHS wise well you can have your head taken off your that close to the train!

    Hanoi Train Street
Anh was a Hanoi local with lots of interesting snippets about local food and life. Arranged a great viewing spot on a café balcony to view the train passing through. Highlight of my wife’s trip.

Schedule is not accurate, but interesting
The street is "closed" and you need one of the cafe owners to let you in. They will definitely approach you at the entrance to the street. They are persistent. We came to see a train scheduled for 7pm and were told that a train wouldn't come until 9. We didn't want to wait to see the train, so... Take that with a grain of salt. The street itself is interesting, but the constant sales pitch to get in is annoying.

    AWESOME EXPERIENCE!
Amazing experience, we were able to make friends with a local who took us down the tracks. We sat downstairs at one of the cafes and had coffee / drinks served to us in good time. All locals made sure tourists were safe and called out to make sure everyone was seated whilst training coming. Best to look up what times, as train does not run often and different for weekday / weekend! Must do!

Worse if you need to go to a place forcefully
The place is good but people who run business are really bad. Access the train street through the manned train gate and pick a spot for yourself. People are very much business minded in train street

An exciting experience not seen anywhere else
We went on a Thursday during the day to see it when it was quiet from the mid point and get some pictures. It was closed to access I assume to allow the locals some peace! We returned at night at about 2015 and got picked up at the entry end near the station by a cafe owner and taken to some stools next to the track. It seemed to be controlled by invite to manage where people would be. Ordered our drinks took some pictures. Lively bright street now. As the train time came about 2040, cafe owners marshalled everyone back by the wall - absolutely necessary as it still passed us by within touching distance! Quite a one off experience and definitely worth a visit.

    Interesting Place
Vising Hanoi Train street was on my list. Unfortunately, the day we visited, the train timing was 9.30 pm which was not possible for us to go. So we went during the day. It is a residential area with the train track passing in between houses. We walked the track, took photos and sat in a cafe beside the railway track to relish some coffee and chat with the locals who were going about their usual business that time of the day. The vibe is fascinating. Don't miss it if you are in Hanoi.

Wait a long time for the train
The train seemed to have missed the schedule. The street was entirely blocked until ‘10’ minutes before train scheduled to arrive. Then they opened the street to let everyone in so that they can go to the coffee shop. Then the train took another 30 minutes to arrive. Overall just a fun experience watching the train past by.

    Worth a visit!
There are a lot of reviews on here saying that this is a scam and I'm not sure if we were lucky or the people who have left negative reviews were just unlucky. We were not stopped when trying to visit Train Street and were welcome to go into any cafe or bar that we liked and stayed for as long as we wanted to. People can take photos on the tracks but are asked to step back to safety well before the train is due to travel through. Seeing a train go by so close is worth the wait.

We arrived at one section around lunch time and there were barriers up and a guard telling us we couldn’t walk down the track. Having been observing how people enter, I told him we wanted a cafe and he let us in. If you look Vietnamese the guard will most definitely let you in. However, he did not let a pair of middle eastern tourist enter even though they bought a few cups of coffee. he let them hold it outside the gate. Very upset at the racism of the Guards (The photo of the guard is in the pictures). oh yes, the store owner that sells led lights beside the railway station will use a LOUD honk to honk tourist away from HIS STORE. why place your store there, why?!

We visited a cafe bar next to the tracks with out tour guide around lunch time. It was great to see the people living and working so close to the track.
The trains run twice at night so we booked a table at the same cafe so we could return to witness the train passing that evening. If you are visiting a cafe the guards will let you pass, otherwise the people running businesses there would be ruined.

Was pre warned by a friend that visited a few days ago that you wont be allowed access unless you're "invited" into one of the pubs or restaurants. So therefore we dodnt argue when we were invited to a place. Once you're in you can wander around and go to other pubs or restaurants. It did seem to keep the people traffic down, so we were able to take tourist free pictures and enjoy our surroundings. We spent about 2 or 3 hours here, watched 3 trains go by, they're fairly regular, and visited 2 places, one for just a drink and another where we had some nibbley food and a drink. It's a must do here in Hanoi!!

Guards will stop you walking down the track so look for local shop owners who will take you to the cafe next to the tracks. I was expecting a scam but nothing. Drinks are reasonably priced too so definitely do it if you can.

We read that if you looked for a person called Linh she will take you to her cafe and will give you an excellent view of the on going trains when they go past at the allocated times. When we found the track at 220 Le Duan (a couple of blocks further past the main Hanoi railway station) Linh indeed was there. There was also a guard who seemed to blow his whistle randomly at tourists. Sometimes he'd let them thru, other times he'd tell them to go away as it's dangerous. Linh guided us to her cafe called the 1990's Hanoi cafe. There are downstairs and upstairs and indeed when the train goes past, it is very very close. Definitely a highlight of the trip so long as you listen to the locals when they tell you what to do to get the best view without causing danger to the tracks.

I'd seen the pictures of the trains crossing the road in central Hanoi... now I've experienced the real thing, and what an experience!

It's not an 'official' tourist attraction - the government are trying to stop tourists because of the close proximity to the moving trains. However, if you do find the crossing, take advantage of the many cafe's there are along the track. You can't just walk in - there is guard stopping people walking along the track - but the cafe owners will approach you for a coffee and take you in.

When trains pass its loud and pretty scary, but well worth it.

I've posted a pic of the train timetable as of Jan 2020.

It was quite difficult for us to find, our grab driver just dropped us nearby and the language barrier could have meant we weren’t clear on where we wanted to go. However a helpful couple walking on the street pointed us in the right direction. We found Ha Noi 1990’s. They were great. We had seats, right on the side of the track and a beer within minutes. They knew the exact time the trains were running and were great at getting people organized and sitting safely. We saw the train twice within 15 mins and it was a great activity on our list of things to do/see

This is one of the strangest places we have ever been to. You literally walk down the train track and either side are bars and cafes. The best thing to do is go to one of the cafe or bars and have a drink, while you wait for the train to pass inches away from you. Its totally amazing. Great photo/video opportunities! As there is now a barrier in place stopping you from just walking on to the tracks, you need to go with a guide. They have access to the various bars/cafes, which you need to pass through to get on to the track.

We were lucky enough to arrive just before the 11.30 am train on Saturday morning we found a nice little cafe and had a coffee then the train arrived, it is definitely an experience and worth the trip.
The local people are really nice and the cafe owner gave us a lot of information which was great.
We did come across the grumpy security guard but we just walked down to the next section and found another spot.
Monday to Friday it’s only night trains from 7 pm and on Saturday and Sunday they start from 11.30 am.

We arrived at the railway, the rude guard never allow us to
Enter the coffee shop near the railway and even shouted at us to ask us to go away! Before entering to the train street, either to tell the rude guard you wanted to go coffee shop (not recommended) OR wait for him to move away from him work station then quickly sneak in to the train street. Never try to wander around the train street if the guard is there or else he will chase you out. In addition, he is racist as well. He allows partially European and American to enter’
