"Ann" Phương Anh Lưu gave me a wonderful tour and an extremely unique view of Hanoi that I'd have otherwise never been able to experience. On the tour I was able to experience local eateries and flavors that were each an incredible treat. Some of the foods included Bun Trang, a hearty and traditional noodle soup, then coconut ice cream with sticky rice that was incredible (I believe it was called kem xôi). After that the famous Bánh Mì sandwich, then a wonderful papaya salad (I forgot the name), followed by egg coffee at a very hip upstairs lounge. All the places Ann took me to were very unique and on my own I'd never have gotten to experience these places or so many unique foods. Ann knew the best local spots and some back alley locations to get this great food and she really is a very terrific and nice person as well. The cost of each food item was extremely reasonable and I felt that the small donation requested by the company is quite a value considering the quality of the tour. I really enjoyed the tour and highly recommend it. Thank you Ann!!!

I was greeted at my hotel at 8.30am by 2 cute Vietnamese girls. They were very friendly and spoke good English. We walked around the city seeing the lake, temples, markets, and various streets. This tour was AWESOME! They explained the history of each place we visited and they did their research very well. Any questions I asked they went out of their way to answer. They took me to a popular ice cream shop and even bought me one (Thankyou). It was very well organised and very informative. If you are visiting Hanoi, I highly reccommend for you to take this tour. You learn a lot about Vietnam history, culture and get to see the local life.

Nga Nguyen was my city tour guide in Hanoi she is such a smart and friendly girl. She do a city tour guide as a volunteer but she did it as profestional. 4-5 hours walk in the city she always willing to share knowledge and information and do her best as a tourguide. You can get in to local better than buy a day trip from the tour company. She is just a teen 19 years old girl but mature enough. She said she like to practice herself so she did it for free but for my opinion she could get some money from things she loves to do so I give a tip for her even she refuesd becouse she deserved. If you visit Hanoi don't miss a chance to meet up with her ask her about local food if u are foodie like me ^^

Our guide met us at our hotel for what I expected to be a fun, interesting tour, as described by the itinerary. As we left the hotel, our guide asked us what we would like to see. We answered that we did not know, because we had just arrived last night and in response to this, she smiled awkwardly and we just stood in the alleyway until we finally suggested a trip to see one of the lakes. She took us to the lake walking very very quickly and providing absolutely no conversation, and following a lap of the lake we were again asked 'what do you want to see'. Again, 'we don't know, please can you recommend something', and again, following this we just stood in silence. After a while our guide came up with the idea of visiting the main sights in Hanoi (from the very beginning she had ignored the itinerary), and so I had to call an Uber to take us to the Literature Temple. After paying her entrance fee and another very quick tour, we were finished and again faced with the 'what do you want to do scenario'. She suggested 'pub street' in the Old Quarter, after we had rejected her suggestion of visiting a motorway bridge.. so again we got in to an uber on our 'walking tour' and after a 20 minute trip we arrived at 'pub street' which was literally a few western bars.. not great sightseeing. We decided we had had enough so asked her to take us back to the hotel, which she did at a very very fast walk. When sitting in the lobby she made us feel very uncomfortable when she asked us to write a TripAdvisor review on our phones in front of her. I genuinely found this tour laughable, as she provided absolutely no conversation and her English was appalling. When she did speak she spoke so quietly and she lacked confidence. I am astounded by the quality of this tour and would fully recommend paying for a guide or day trip instead as we have done a few free tours on our trip through Vietnam and this is my second 'terrible' review so far. In my last review I also recommended doing a paid tour so I think we have learnt our lesson now!

Dear Benjamin, Thank you for reaching out about your experience with us, and we understand your frustration and dissatisfaction. Please allow me to reiterate my sincere apologies for all the inconvenience you have been through. From our heart, we really want to serve tourists as well as possible but your tour was not good as your expectation. We are so sorry about that. About your guide, our guides are students, not professional guide. We always sent student guide for free tour. It is our mission when both tourists and students have benefits from that, we can exchange culture, make friends, and learn more,.... Students will be tested before joining the club and have to be trained before take any tour. we accept students not just only because of their skill, their english but also their enthusiasm and attitude. They really want to communicate with foreigners and exchange culture. She asked you manything for your agree and she did not have so much experiences. So our guide did not know so much how do they will do the tour for you. Anyway, We are really sorry when she could not make the tour well because our trainning was not good. This free tour we have already organised for some months, it is really new. The system is still incomplete and it is certainly not perfect when our system is in the beginning phase. I hope that you can sympathy for us. We are so sorry for your unhappy. Surely, you were very disapointed. We can’t fix the past but you have my personal commitment to improve the way our staff serves every customer. Until then, please accept my sincerest apologies on behalf of everyone on the team. We are improving and training our guide better, certainly need more time to do that but not immediately and hope that our service will be much more better. Once again, thank you so much! Warm regards, Hanoi Free Local Tour Team

I have attended at least 20 free walking tours all over the world and this one was the worst!
Firs of all, it is not free. The price of the tour is sent via e-mail.
Secondly, the guide barely spoke English. Also, she was not prepared for the tour in advance and asked us where we want to go and what to see. Also, we did not visit any hidden gems or secret places.
Third, we did get information neither about the history of Vietnam/Hanoi nor about the culture or food. Our questions were not answered.
Fourth, she gave us false information about working hours of certain museums instead of double-checking it. Or simply saying that she does not know.
Technically, we could have visited all these places by ourselves using Google maps but instead we had a person who took us from one point to another.

Dear Raminta, First of all, I want to say many thanks for your review. From that we can know what is problem of running our system. We always really want to bring my best valuable during time you stay in Hanoi to support you any cases you need and you can join the trip you like. But your tour was not good as your expectation. We are so sorry about that. About the fee, we work for this with no profit, no salary while we have to hire staff, arrange the tour so we will not cover your entrances fee, your foods if you did not pay any cash before. Every tourists has to pay for your entrance fees, foods and drinks if they use. Now each tourist will pay 5$ if they want to take the tour. With Hanoi Old Quarter tour, we will pay for guide and tourist: ancient house ticket, egg coffee - 2$/1 person and the rest is extremely tiny for running the system and make sure that tourist will not cancel at last minutes. About tour guide, I have to say that our guides are students, not professional guide. We always sent student guide for free tour. It is our mission when both tourists and students have benefits from that, we can exchange culture, make friends, and learn more,.... Students will be tested before joining the club and have to be trained before take any tour. However, everything is not perfect and not all of our guide will speak English well, not all of student will be good at listening and handle situations. We did not hire a professional guide; our guides are students, we accept students not just only because of their skill, their english but also their enthusiasm and attitude. They really want to communicate with foreigners and exchange culture. Anyway, We are really sorry when she could not make the tour well. Moreover, we have already organize this free tour for some months. So honestly, everything is new with us and must be not perfect or good like the tours you experienced in other country. Surely, you were very disappointed. We had an AMAZING experience with all the students we met that are part of the organization. We went to a Discussion to share differences and similarities with our culture and the Vietnamese and also a Day Tour to the Pottery Village. For us it was the best way to know the Vietnamese Culture and know the right places because they would explain about the history and traditions behind the places.

Huyền Ngọc Nguyễn was the student that took us to the Pottery Village and her enthusiasm and kindness made our day! : )

We would definitely recommend them and we will do another tour on our way back to Hanoi!

This club was awesome: easy-to-book tour, friendly guides (who happen to be students) and authentic experience. The best of all is that the tours are totally FREE. Highly recommend for those who first come to Hanoi and want to explore the city in one day with a local :)

She took me around hoan kiem lake. We saw the turtle tower and pagoda. We also tried some local food and ice cream. On the next day, we went to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Ho Tay lake and the oldest pagoda in Vietnam. Very Good !

bad experience. we had booked a tour a few days ago by filling out the form on the web page and sending three emails. All the mails had confirmed my tour this morning at 8:30. We woke up very early and we were timely for the appointment but our guide never came up without even advising us. I sent an e-mail after 1 hour of waiting and answered a few hours later telling me they had problems with the system. We wait one hour and we had to revisit our plans. I'm sorry, but they were very disorganized and rude.

Our guide ThuTrang was excellent.
The half day trip to Bat Trang and later a walking tour of the Old Quarter was a success mostly due to her energy and friendly character. The kids enjoyed the pottery making at Bat Trang.
The walk in the Old Quarter was made more interesting with the information she provided about the place.

An excellent way to see and learn about Hanoi.
Very highly recommended.
