About
Zó is a social enterprise with the mission of preserving and developing Dó paper – a traditional kind of handmade paper of Vietnam. Appearing in Vietnam in XIII century, Dó paper is manufactured through a painstaking process consisting up to 100 steps. It is renowned for being very durable and resilient, with a subtly textured surface. While having a lot of cultural and historical significance, the practice of making Dó paper is at risk of being lost as modern society continues to lose touch with traditional culture. Zó hopes to reinvigorate traditional Dó practices with contemporary uses of this timeless craft. We are promoting creativity with a varity of both practical and artistic products made from Dó paper and organizing events/workshops that familiarize younger generations with Dó.

I searched Trip Advisor to find creative little shops for unusual, "non-touristy" gifts to bring home from our visit to Hanoi, and was so glad that this was listed.

I purchased a number pretty paper earrings (with packaging as creative as the earrings, themselves); I wish I had known about the "earring classes" ahead of time - this will teach me to research my shopping on Trip Advisor before we arrive!

My husband is not a "shopper", but he was excited as I was to experience the VERY unique location of this shop: directly on an active railroad line! We were not there when the train went by (although we could certainly hear it from our nearby hotel at night), but I was able to find a postcard that showed just how close the train comes to the buildings - only a foot or two of clearance. It certainly must be exciting to witness, even with the train going very slowly for safety's sake!

I would definitely call this experience one of the highlights of our stay in Hanoi.

Stopped by on the last day of our trip to get gifts. What all the other reviews are saying still holds true as of the time of writing. The products (inter alia, notebooks, calendars, bookmarks, paper earrings, paper) are intricate and creative. There is also the tour of the paper making facility offered but we were unable to attend. Highly recommend. It is also situated on the train street, so you can plan your trip to coincide with the timing of the train. The lady managing the store also speaks fluent English so dont be afraid to ask her about the products. Great stuff.

I've been incredibly fortunate to see Zo Project's growth from nothing more than a dream into what it is today. Creating beautifully crafted hand made paper products is just a small part of what Zo is all about, Zo educates the youth about the process and values of making paper by hand. They teach people to respect the environment and nature. They also create opportunities for the people who make the paper and the artisans who use the paper. Yes, Zo has an amazing selection of traditional hand made paper products but it is how Zo works with and inspires the local community that I admire the most. There is so much to love about Zo Project.

We were met by Hongky, who explained to us that the zó Project is a social enterprise that helps support about 5 families in a village, 60km South of Hanoi, that preserves the 800 year old art of paper making. There is a choice to do earring making (what my daughter and I did with the very patient Ling), book binding (which my son and husband did) and also calligraphy. You can also buy some super cool in house designed greetings cards, pictures etc all using the paper made by the village families. Very reasonably priced. It is in a really interesting location, too, right on the railway line (trains only come after 7pm on weekdays, more frequently on weekends....) try visiting the railway cafe too, for a Vietnamese egg coffee or some bun cha! Cost 20 is dollars pp

Zo is a fantastic shop focused on rehabilitating traditional paper making in Vietnam. Located right off the railway the ambience of the area in unparalleled allowing you to shop for wonderful stationery and souvenirs while listening to families chat outside while roosters crow. A welcome break from the overcrowded tourist junk shops, Zo is an urban oasis, highly recommended!

For a few years now the Zo Project has been doing something both invaluable and creative. It has helped to revive the centuries-old tradition of handmade paper manufacturing in northern Vietnam; at the same time it has pioneered new products and new markets. The fruits of its work can be seen in its charming new store in Hanoi. The handmade paper is absolutely first class - and suitable for different media: watercolour, pen and ink, calligraphy, and so on. And then there are the attractive products, such as notebooks, calendars, diaries, that make for unique gifts. This is a great social enterprise, and the staff team is knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommended.

Today I attended an earring making workshop. It was brilliant!!!!! I’m earring obsessed and it was amazing making my own earrings from scratch. The teacher was helpful and patient with me, gave me a run down of the history of the material we used (paper from Northern Vietnam). I would definitely recommend if you’ve two hours to spare . The workshop was in a studio on train street which was cool too. Thanks for a brilliant day!

Zó project was by far the best part of our trip to Hanoi. This all-female led social enterprise is dedicated completely to preserving the ancient traditions of dó paper making and to supporting the muong village people. We had so much fun and felt like we were taking part in a much bigger experience. There was a workshop to suit all kinds of ages, and it was really atmospheric to sit on the railway line and make paper while the locals came by to watch and ask questions and share their own stories. The girls have done a great job of taking the traditional paper and turning into contemporary products for souvenirs, everything was great and everyone was so respectful.

We went to Zo Project to have a look at the paper products and also with a view to signing the kids up for a workshop. The paper really is beautiful. Unfortunately we won’t ever know about the workshops - the woman at the desk was focused only on her phone, had absolutely no interest in answering our questions, and when politely pressed wearily told us to check the website. Such high quality craft deserves far better than the lacklustre, indifferent service we encountered.
