This was a wonderful, peaceful respite from hustle of Hanoi. Our cabin was warm and rich dark tones of wood. The room was spacious for two with a balcony on the side. Le was our cruise director. He made everyone feel included and brought humor and smiles to all the passengers.

We just disembarked our 2day-1night cruise on Halong Bay with Pelican and we thoroughly enjoyed it. There are loads of tourist cruise boats out there but it looks like they are keeping the bay reasonably clean and definitely not unloading and rubbish or water in it. The cruise was well organised with activities like kayaking, Tai-chi, cave visit that are interesting and never too long, happy hour drinks very reasonable and lovely atmosphere in the night. Crew friendly and efficient, would definitely recommend.

No wireless during the trip (the other boats did have!) I asked for hot milk during breakfast and said "no".First time I can see sale of small cheap articles seated while dining!...out of place. No free water for dining. They even try to sell you the remote control of AA (with its price!), never seen..Manager only got worried in playing up some people smiling with a silly smile. Don't like they count money in front of customers, poor gesture. Food and stuff were good, the only good thing.

I did a 2 day cruise on the Azalea. Which had I been writing this review after Day 1, it would have gotten 5 stars. I thought the boat was beautiful, the staff seemed friendly, and I loved the bathrooms. However, it was clear that they are not trained when something goes wrong, which in my case it did.
Our tender got stuck, and when they took us to a rocky, polluted beach that had sea urchin type things in the water that were sticking in peoples feet. Thankfully, i had water socks on so this part did not effect me. My fellow passengers were not so lucky. To make this very long story a little shorter. It took 2 1/2 hours to get the boat on stuck. The crew as clueless as to what to do. We had to swim the distance of two Olympic size pools to the boat. I had to do this twice, as I was unable to get myself in the boat the first time. After, we eventually, all were on board-no thanks to the crews help, but by the other help passengers on board. Getting an apology or any-type of first-aid from anyone was nearly impossible. We finally got an apology after we had to bring it our attention that people were angry by the experience. Their attempt to pacify us was to offer us a warm soda to take with us when we were exiting the boat.

Halong bay is undeniably beautiful. The boat however is not modern.

The furniture to relax on is wooden and not comfortable, with no pillows or mattresses etc. The sun loungers rock hard and not comfy.

The boat was incredibly loud during the night.

You are provided with 2 complimentary bottles of water on arrival and then that’s it. There is nowhere to refill your water, so you are forced to buy. If we knew this, we would have gone to a supermarket beforehand to buy supplies. We were on the boat for over 48 hours, so we spent a lot of money being forced to buy drinks to stay hydrated. There are no drinks included with your dinner either. Only breakfast has drinks provided.

The boat takes you to locations that are RAMMED from other tour boats going to the same locations at the same times. I am unsure why they would not stagger the arrival of the cruise ships at the different locations, as they all seem to go the same place at the same time. The sights were therefore incredibly busy from other boats.

The boat drops you off at locations but does not have a guide explain to you about the sites. You just explore on your own. This means we were often trying to ear-wig on other tour guides to try get some understanding, particularly in the caves on day 2.

Our cruise was also cut short because of the weather, meaning we missed the floating markets. However we were promptly refunded, which was appreciated.

They picked us up from Hanoi and dropped us off in Ninh Bình (for an additional fee).

Overall, the bay is beautiful, but the boat and the organisation could be improved. One night on the boat is enough.

The true star of this trip was Halong bay itself. It was easy to be sucked into the hype. The first day was a festival of love and happiness - the second day left like left overs and they were busy preapring for the next load of wallets - airconditioners and fans not on - out of your room by 9.00am. The schedule ran like a miliatry camp and even if you indicated you didn't want to attend one of the volunatry events - you were checked numerous times( I get they were being efficient but sometimes it felt efficious).
We loved the surrondings, the rooms were relatively spacious and overall a good experience.. no balcony but a great view

As all visitors have remarked, nature arounf uin Halng Bay is miraculus. No comment. In our Pelican boat we had a luxury room with ample side view..So u weak up in the mornig...and in front of your door window..u have the rocks of Halong. 2 days 1 nighy is enough. No needfor the 2 nights.
Thr boat manager Jiusepe is a commited professional. omnipresent.very efficient with good humor. He adds up to this business.
Now ...we go to the effect of our ...touristic presence on this natural wonder. There ALL OF Us should share our responsibility to revert yhe current state of thiings. Waters are heavily spoiled by plastics.bottles.Thats a shame. TOO many boats allowed to stroll around in yhe same area. There should be a control on number and timing of boats' itinery. 20 boats docking in tamdem near the bih cave...tourists are packed in...and in 2 hours all this is gone.

Ha long bay itself is beautiful, so you will definitely feel relaxed. We stayed for two nights- there just wasn't enough variety, we had the same cooking demonstrating two nights in row and the food was average at best, especially for the money. You don't even get a complementary water with meals (prices are steep 3-4 times the price of Hanoi). If you rely on Internet, connection is poor but I think most boats would have this problem.
I recommend only doing one night (probs with a different company) and another night at cat ba island.
On a positive the room was lovely, the beds very comfy and our tour manager was lovely and extremely helpful, making phone calls to sort out our transportation after the trip.

Wow! We went to Ninh Binh a couple of days ago before this cruise and we thought it was going to take something special to beat that experience - and it certainly did!
You can't really compare the two areas but the views are just spectacular and we were very lucky with the weather!
The activities were very good and we highly recommend doing the 2 night / 3 day cruise so you dont feel so rushed! The staff were very friendly and good fun (shout out to Dong for your hospitality) would recommend to anyone if they ever thinknof going to Vietnam!
