My wife and I started our honeymoon by taking a 3 day/2 night cruise on Halong Violet. I highly recommend it. After arriving at the pier via the van shuttle, we grabbed a coconut drink and were transferred to the boat. We were greeted on the boat by all the staff with flowers and a welcome drink in the restaurant area. We were told that we were the only two people on the boat at that time, which meant that we'd basically have our own private excursions during the day. We relaxed for a little, were served a great seafood lunch, and then got ready to take a smaller boat to the floating villages in the Bay. When we returned to the main boat, we were given a free cocktail and served another great meal in the restaurant area. All the meals on the boat were at least 4 courses and very good. They give you a ton of food. After the meal was over, the crew brought out a cake with candles to celebrate our honeymoon. The next morning we woke up, relaxed on the deck of the boat, had breakfast, and then went biking around one of the islands. We stopped in a village when we were on the bikes and came across a family of goats. We returned to the boat and then went to do some kayaking in an isolated part of the bay. Our guide led us under tunnels and what not. Then we kayaked to a private beach where the crew had set up a table just for my wife and me to enjoy cocktails in private. We then came back to the day boat and they had another great lunch for us. We cruised around for a while and eventually headed back to the main boat. That night we had dinner on the deck. The last day we did a short hike on top one of the islands and enjoyed swimming at the beach.
The staff, food, accommodations, and activities were all great. And they went the extra step to make our honeymoon extra special.

Our flight arrived in 8.30am to Hanoi. Stefan from Best Cruises arranged our visa and pickup via taxi to Halong Bay -(Bai Chay port)and return. This was the only tour operator I could find that guaranteed to get us to the cruise without paying extra for a tender (which only goes about 100meters from shore to pick up cruise boat anyway). We actually arrived at the dock before the others who were picked up from Hanoi hotels on a shuttle. All the junks in this port are white on the outside making them look shabby. Another pax said he was told it was government regulations and they all had to be painted white. The boats from Hong Gai port are painted brown/red and go a different route to the ones out of Bai Chay - you do not see these on the water.. I asked for sails to be raised and they said they dont do this as it can make the boat unstable. Also asked why we harbour overnight in a bay with 14 other junks when there are 1000 islands and you could be by yourself. They said it was a time issue to ensure they fulfilled the itinerary - although we did not disembark at the fishing village as we ran out of time! - but having cruised passed the village we wouldnt have wanted to anyway. The village is a major thoroughfare with about 80 boats (possibly more) all cruising past it at the same time as us.
The taxi transfers (US$100) and one night stay was $US250 (July). Staff, food was good/plentiful, cabin 3 star, so ok - overall loved the experience of seeing Halong Bay. It was worthwhile to do,
Overall I think I made a mistake on this part of our travels. It's 3.5 hours to Halong Bay by road. If I did this again, I would get to Halong Bay, then suss out a cruise out of Hong Gai Port -no need to book, there are 1,000 cruise ships. You have gone all that way for this one attraction and you definately get what you pay for!, so can work out what suits you best when you are there. US$250 a night is expensive for 3 star and I'm sure you could get a better deal. 1 night or 2 night - again?. I think if you have gone all that way go 2 nights to get full experience and relaxation - it would be better.
One last thing do not do the cruise on a weekend, its even more hectic!!, The cruise staff do not/cannot go through the fishing village on a weekend because of the amount of traffic.
I wish I had read this review - before I went!.
Happy holidays.

I tried to book a luxury tour via their website for a week - it is the most confusing process ever. There is no search feature, and no real description of the cruises. I sent them an email, with no response. I chatted with them, and they said that I needed to "read the descriptions" - which I did... all of them seemed similar, and I couldn't really understand the price differences.
Then, in the middle of the chat, the guy says "We are closed, please email us for more information". I already sent them an email, and they didn't respond - I was not about to email them again! I'll book through another travel agency any day of the week.

my wife and I was able to visit Vietnam this May 2012, although there are limited things/places to see in Vietnam, Never ever go to Vietnam without a Halong Bay boat tour. first you must endure a long road trip about 3-4hrs (about 140km), due to the imposed speed limit from 45km/hr within a city to max speed of only 80km/hr on the highway. not to mention the innumerable, often irritating motorbikes blocking the way, and the worse, the large, often slow, even reckless truck/bus drivers. fortunately, once the boat ride in underway, you will finally feel Peace and tranquility flowing thru you, most of the boats have quite motors, the water is mostly calm, the scenic view is almost spiritual, that you might want to sit on top of any of the large rock and meditate. we've been to a boat rides in different countries, most of the scenery are man made structures like palaces, buildings, houses etc. but Halong Bay trumps them all!

We have organized the Halong Bay of our trip in Vietnam with Halong Luxury Travel. The staff did an amazing job, answer quickly all my question via email and provide us many many useful information for our holiday in Vietnam. The staff has suggested me travel with Glory Cruise. The Golry Cruise on Halong Bay which is a modern, clean and beautiful junks. The Tour guide on boat was amazing who took us off the beaten track and provided with an inside’s view into the life of his family and village. The Cruise was TOP CLASS. Extraordinaire nature, good weather, friendly staff, lots of time, silence. I am not sure if I have any recommendations for improvements since everything went so well – just PERFECT - PERFECT

My family and I would like to thank you for all your help and cooperation on arranging our family vacation in Vietnam. Our trip was absolutely amazing and a dream come true event.
Our tour guides were very knowledge about the area, professional, kind, and attentive to our needs and wants. When we came across situations, such as a site closing, our guide(s) always gave us an alternative to site see/do; which the alternative ended up being very enjoyable for us. We completely appreciated our tour guides in their assistance at the airports and making sure we got to the airport on time for transfer.
During our 13 days trip our accommodations were very nice except for one location where we ended up with a room with a barking dog right outside our window. However, this did not damper our vacation attitude by any means; we were just a bit more tired that next morning.
The food provided during our trip was delicious and gave us a good sense of the Vietnamese cuisine. We truly appreciated that our tour guides did make sure there were not always seafood on our menus since our children do not eat seafood.
The sites seen will always be a memory we will cherish and talk about for the rest of our lives. My son, Calvin, still talks about kayaking in Halong Bay; states that was his favorite part of the trip. Visiting my birth place in Nha Trang was extremely emotional for me and I cannot express the gratitude I have for you and your company for finding my home. I do not know of many people who would do such research for a client. Thank you seems like such small words but there is no other that will say what my heart feels.
I have and will continue to suggest you and your company to any of my family and friends who wish to travel to Vietnam and the surrounding countries. I know giving them your contact information will land them in good, caring hands.

Recently my son and I visited Vietnam. We arranged our trip through Vietnam TripAdvisor (VTA) who, I gather are part of the Asia Tour Advisor group which also includes Halong Bay Day Trip. The beauty of using VTA was that we could tailor the trip to our liking based on their very good recommendations. We travelled from South to North going to many wonderful places along the way. At each place we were met by a local guide who spoke good English and who took us to and explained all the local significant sites. I could go on but if you are considering a trip to Vietnam I suggest you get in touch with VTA! In relation to our trip to Ha Long Bay we found the road trip from Ha Noi to be poor. The bus was cramped and uncomfortable. Once onboard the Paloma things looked up. We had one night on board. The weather was against us but did not stop us from enjoying this beautiful area. The staff/crew of the Paloma made the trip special. Interestingly on our return to Ha Noi VTA had arranged a day trip to Tam Coc (known as Ha Long Bay inland). The place is absolutely stunning and in many ways better than Ha Long Bay! We would have missed it without VTA.
