    A geological wonder
Ha Long Bay is a geological wonder, with endless beautiful karst limestone islands. We chartered a boat for the day, Ha Long Lotus Cruises, which was great: we all had cabins even though it was not an overnight trip, and we brought along a chef who prepared both lunch and dinner (excellent food). We stopped at one of the big caves; having seen a lot of limestone caves along with various stactites and stalagmites, I could have passed on this aspect of the day - the caves were interesting but not spectacular, and they were VERY crowded. That's the only problem with Ha Long - there are a ton of tourists and tour boats. We made a final stop at Ti Top island to swim off the beach; it was also crowded, but the water was nice. But mostly the pleasure of the day was cruising through these waters surrounded by beautiful scenery.

    Beautiful Halong Bay
We did this visit as part of our holiday with Mercury Holidays - Impressions of Vietnam. Excellent trip. Rooms were lovely, bathroom ideal. Food was excellent. Views brilliant. Would definitely recommend it. We visited the Luon caves in a bamboo boat and also went to a beach for a swim. Did Tai Chi and engaged in a cooking demonstration Staff very helpful. Drinks available - card or cash. Beautiful area. Very calming atmosphere and beautiful views. Quite alot of rubbish but I believe the Government are looking at getting the Boat Owners involved in clearing it up.

Bucket list item, not ideal weather but still awe-inspiring!
I booked a two day one night cruise as part of my Vietnam/Cambodia itinerary through Thu at Vietnam Travel- she and the company are great! The boat tour company was Glory Legend Cruises and it was great too, very friendly staff, great food, smooth sailing (and totally stable at night, it felt like sleeping on land), and fun activities. I especially enjoyed tai chi on the top deck with the captain at 6am. Halong Bay was a bucket list item for me and it was awesome. Though the weather wasn't amazing- it was a dense cloudy haze/mist almost the whole time, but it still made for some cool atmospheric photos. I met a couple who said they'd been in Vietnam all of April, from the south to the north, and it was hazy the whole time. Perhaps it's hazy season? We got hazy sun for about two hours in the afternoon, but that was mostly when we were in the giant cave, ha! No matter, it is still incredible, just the sheer number of amazingly shaped islands. I felt like I was about to see King Kong any moment! We also went to Ti Top Island and Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave, both great! I had read reviews of Halong before my trip and was worried about the trash, but it didn't ruin it for me. Yes there was some, but pretty intermittently, and never enough to ruin any of the amazing views. There is cool stuff in the water too, including giant jellyfish! This is an amazing place, so glad I got to see it!

Worth a visit , just be careful with who you book with
Ha Long Bay’s natural beauty is beyond words, and this trip offered breathtaking views of the islands. Cruising through the landscapes was an enchanting experience, and the photo opportunities were endless. The caves were fascinating to explore, and the kayaking, though brief, was enjoyable.

Spectacular view and many enjoyable activities.
Overnight stay on the boat is highly recommended. Day trip is too short. The highlight of my trip. Make sure you climb Ti Top Mountain. The view up there is spectacular, its only a 20-30 minutes climb. After the climb have a swim at the foothill.

    Overnight Cruise to Halong Bay
It is about a 2 to 2.5 hour bus drive to Halong Bay from Hanoi. It is possible to do Halong Bay in one day but it will be a long day. We decided to stay overnight. The Cabin, Toilet Facilities, Shower and even a spa Bath were great. We did two activities off boat - Kayaking and a Cave Tour. The kayaking was great. We paddled in two man Kayaks (they were really stable) around a couple of small islands. The government has recently moved to restrict plastics to protect Halong Bay so as we paddled we picked up any litter we saw. If everyone like me picked up some litter the place would benefit. The boats could even make it a competition, There would have been 10 - 15 boats with people paddling in different areas so a lot of litter could be picked up. There was some litter but on a whole it was a nice paddle. With the Cave Trip we went by Tender to a loading area where local wooden boats were used (all piloted by locals) to take us through a large cave, It was a very nice tour. Halong Bay is worth seeing and any efforts to protect it are well worth it.

The hidden beauty of Halong Bay
Halong Bay is a true gem in Vietnam that completely took my breath away. The stunning emerald waters, towering limestone cliffs, and hidden caves make for a magical experience. Taking a boat tour is the best way to explore and immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery. Don't miss out on kayaking through the peaceful waters. This is a must-see destination that will leave you in awe.

Truly a piece of Heaven on earth. Hundreds of limestone islands(actually 1969 according to locals) dotting a tranquil bay. Ignore everything you read about crowds of boats, polluted water and all - the beauty of this place overpowers everything.
Make sure you take a one night cruise; a day cruise is too rushed. If you book through your hotel you pay higher, but it is worth saving the hassle. You are on a holiday to enjoy, after all.
The cruises try to pack your time with activities - most on-board activities like cooking classes, tai chi etc can be given a miss. Use that time on the sundeck, soaking up the atmosphere and the sunset.

On a tour we were able to spend the night on a junk. The whole area is simply stunning. Would recommend kayaking to navigate your self around is so much fun . We went around 4 pm in the afternoon and we were nearly alone , it was so quite and beautiful.
Went to the caves which were bigger than I thought they would be, worth the steps.

No photos can prepare for the truly awesome sight of these limestone protrusions thrusting up from the water. Take the 2-3 day tours -- one day is NOT enough. The caves, the beaches, the views from the top of these mountains and the glorious sunrises and sunsets are NOT to be missed.

Halong Bay is a fantastic trip. We had the boat booked for our tour group (10 people) We had a great time aboard the boat. The accommodation was of a very high standard. The chef was amazing and the food was excellent. We had a workshop showing us how to make fish net decoration from carrots and the flowers from carrot and cucumber. The staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for you. If you have a chance to take one of the cruises it is worth it. We were also taken to the boats that take you through the caves, which are stunning. The only downside is the number of properties being built along the quayside. I hope they don't spoil this lovely area.

If you are visiting Vietnam and Hanoi, highly unlikely that you would skip Halong Bay. We booked our trip via local tour operator(Hanoi), which was expensive than Klook, but was available for next day (Klook didn't take the booking post 5pm on the previous day).
We were picked at around 8am from our hotel and took us 2-2:30 hrs to reach the port, with a mandatory stop in between for washroom/meals and shopping. We had taken the route which had the biggest cave and luxury cruise which had 3 floors.
We were treated to a good spread of lunch(limited options for Vegetarian but can't complain) and there were paid drinks available with happy hours in afternoon.
Cave: We spent around 45 mins to 1 hour at this spot as the area was huge and very very crowded. It was decent experience but nothing that would make you jump out of your seat.
Kayaking/Wooden Boat ride: We had to choose one and we choose Boat ride, if you are not confident of Kayaking, better to skip and go for boat ride as the place is crowded and we saw the folks doing Kayak getting squeezed multiple times. But if you are confident and used to doing Kayak, it would be a great experience too (as we checked with other folks who did Kayak).
The views are breathtaking and difficult to keep your hands off mobile to capture the raw beauty of the place. The place consumes you and was the highlight of the day. We were also told by our tour guide to give atleast 1$ per head as tip to the women who had taken us around.
Optional Speed Boat: There was an option to do speed boat by paying 10$/head and it was around 10-15 mins ride which was breathtaking as well. Recommended to opt for this option if you are looking for some fun and picturesque around the multiple caves and mountains of Halong Bay
Beach and Climb to view point: We stayed around 30 mins here and there are stairs to go to the top for view point. This is crowded too and there is also a mid point where you can go to, if not to the top. Top has 360 degree view vs one sided view at the checkpoint.
This was the last point and we boarded the cruise for juices and fruits (which was earlier planned at the top of the cruise, but due to high wind speeds) was conducted in closed space on the 1st floor.
We reached the port post sunset and took some good photos during our cruise time and took similar 2-2:30hrs to reach back to Hotel in Hanoi. A tiring and worthy day.
Recommend to take limousine transport for to and fro as you would spend ~5 hrs on road.
The luxury cruise have fewer people on board and better interiors and facilities vs the general ones which looked very vanilla and had bunch of people. There would not be any difference in the points covered from either cruise.
Enjoy and have a great Halong Day.

The landscape is definitely unique and it could be so beautiful, however the extreme overcrowding and the tremendous amounts of rubbish all throughout the water make it in my opinion not worth the small fortune you have to pay to take a cruise. There is literally no direction you can look without seeing rubbish in the water and it makes swimming very unjoyable. Such a shame, I don't think I would recommend it based on these factors. Also currently all tours are cancelled until at least the beginning of April 2020 because of coronavirus.

The bay was beautiful. I had an incredible time on the boat tour I took despite the day being a bit overcast. Nice spots to hike and kayak. I was a little bummed at how overdeveloped Ha Long City was vs. what I was expecting from personal recos from people who have visited 5-10+ years ago. It’s all in what you’re looking for though.

We enjoyed our 2 day / 1 night junk cruise around Halong bay. The islands are spectacular and watching them pass whilst enjoying drinks and good food on the junk was stunning. Our visit to impressive cave systems was also very good although, sadly, due to bad weather kayaking and swimming were out. On the down side the number of people trying to enjoy the "serenity" of Halong Bay makes it very busy, in particular on the islands for viewpoint climbs etc. Associated litter and fuel residue from boats is also evident. Unfortunately extensive construction work at the mainland port suggests that these problems are going too be magnified in the near future, so get there soon !!

I will say, an area to be visited at least one time in a lifetime. It's way too beautiful, with happenings that are different from a cruise boat, kayaking boat along with a neighborhood bamboo boat flanked by incredible rock formations and quiet water. Could choose a journey of two or maybe more days trip on cruise boats of various types and also sizes to suit the spending budget of yours.

I had a lot of doubts about our 3 days 2 nights trip to Halong Bay because I saw no ao appealing pictures of hundreds of boats following the same routes. I should have listened to my gut feeling. The landscape is really unique and you won’t find anything like this anywhere else BUT this mass tourism totally DESTROYS the beauty of this place.

There is visual, acoustic and sensory contamination throughout the whole day. The air is contaminated with motor oil smell (that even enters the cabins of the cruise boats ) and the noises of the cruise engines is unbearable . I was not able to relax even one minute, not even at 6am in the morning. the waters are full of garbage and oil. It was disgusting! So of course we did not go swimming! Even the kayaking through the layers of foam and oil on the surface was horrible.

We were told that apparently the government since 2016 has rolled out a plan to dismantle the floating villages and the garbage are remainders of those but in my opinion this is only an excuse.

Please don’t support this irresponsible mass tourism until the government and cruise companies clean the waters and protect this beauty! As long as so many people flock in and pay lots of money the companies just see the $ signs and won’t change anything.
