My wife and I took a 3 day/ 2 night trip in Ha Long bay mid January 2020. I spent a lot of time reading reviews before I booked this and I wanted to provide some thoughts now that we completed the tour.
General:
The cruise boats are parked in a waiting area and you are take a tender for about 10 minutes to reach it. It's extremely organized and obvious that they do this many times per month. Once on the boat, you go to another area that's about 2 hours away. All boats park there and you take another tender to do the daily activities. I envisioned our cruiser boat weaving in and out of the islands but it only does that for the couple of hours to get to the second parking lot of other boats.
1 night vs 2 nights:
Our boat had several people who only did one night. If you are short on time, then this is a limited option in my opinion because they offer just short trips like kayaking and visiting a cave in Ha Long Bay. I honestly found the kayaking to be of poor quality because you do it where the boat park and it's fairly polluted with bottles and trash floating in the bay. Since we did the 2 night stay, we left Ha Long Bay and took a tender to Cat Bay island where we biked, visited a small village, tasted rice wine, and kayaked in very clear water with unpopulated beaches we could explore. It was excellent and I felt bad for the 1 nighters who missed this adventure.
Bus vs Private Transportation From and To Hanoi:
I specifically looked for cruises that included transportation in the booking fee but quickly regretted doing so the day of the cruise. We were supposed to be picked up at 9:10-9:20 but were called and told we needed to be ready by 8:10. I was in the shower at 7:45 so we had to scramble to pack and check out but we made it. We were in the bus at 8:10 only to loop through Hanoi for 2 hours getting other guests ( there were only 15 people in total). Our final pickup at 10:00AM was right next to our hotel so needless to say, this started out bad. I'd recommend spending the money for a private ride.
Overall Impression of Boat, Staff and Food:
We stayed on the Pandora Cruise ship. The room was comfortable, and the people were extremely nice. The food was abundant and well prepared. They had karaoke at night which was a lot of fun and some of the staff were really good singers. We got a room with a balcony but honestly didn't use it.
Anyway, hope this helps if you are considering a trip...

Definitely recommend paying a little more for a nicer boat as your experience will be multiplied significantly. There are some rubbish options out there, particularly those bookable through hostels. Also do at least 2 nights if you can afford it - you won’t regret it as this place is magical.

Went on the standard 2 days 1 night cruise with Halong aquamarine. Was more than sufficient time to take in the views of this UNESCO world heritage site.
The scenery was exquisite (although we were fortunate with good weather). It did feel overcrowded at times but this didn’t detract from the overall beauty of the bay. The pollution isn’t as bad as some have suggested.
Our itinerary included kayaking around Luon cave, a view point at Tiptop island, and exploring Sung Sot cave. The activities were excellent and let you really appreciate Halong Bay from different perspectives.

Don’t book trips on trip advisor website it’s a scam. Booked a 6 star cruise on halong bay . Upon arrival in Hanoi I started to receive cryptic massage about a better deal, better boat ect. I answered that all I wanted was to confirm the time of pick up from my hotel nothing else. Fast forward to today. Got picked up on time from my hotel taken to the holding area for transfer to the boat… while on the boat the cruise guide started to describe the boat hum nothing sounded like the the 6 star I booked on trip advisor. So long story short I floating on a rust bucked in halong bay. Good news guys the tour operator from Hanoi told my how lucky I am as the room I am staying in costs over $1000 not the measly $940 or $950 I payed. Do yourself I favor they got travel stores buy the dozen here book your trip on arrival less likely you will get scammed. Now let’s see if trip advisor will refund my money.. one more thing the boat in the pictures they have on the website very nice just seen it go by.

Memorable cruise which departed early at 8:00 am, thus avoiding the massive crowds which we encountered upon our return to port approximately 6 hours later. We stopped to explore "Surprising Cave" where stairs ascend an island's lush, steep hillside to gain cave access. Views of Ha Long Bay from outside the cave's entrance are picturesque. The cave is impressive and massive, with illuminated walkways winding the visitor safely through the interesting interior. My claustrophobic husband had no issues due to the large size of the two chambers of Surprising Cave. Afterward, we enjoyed a nicely presented lunch with white table linens, then headed back to port on our boat with an imaginiative carved dragon head prow. Afterall, Ha Long means: "Where the dragon landed". Cruising through some of the nearly 2,000 unique islands/karsts, we rarely encountered other boats until emerging from the karsts while heading back to shore. Our boat, which had been booked through Gate 1 Tours, was side-swiped as we neared the harbor area. Our group was jarred a bit, but fine. We were surprised by the distant skyscapers now evident along the booming resort coastline. The UNESCO World Heritage Site appeared unspoiled while we were cruising within the limestone karsts on the morning tour. Waters are also much more tranquil for sailing in the morning hours. Bring a hat and warm clothing as the weather can be foggy, overcast or chilly. We spent the night before in a hotel in Ha Long, but felt that our approximately 6 hours on Ha Long Bay was sufficient. This was a fantastic experience!

Truly a piece of Heaven on earth. Hundreds of limestone islands(actually 1969 according to locals) dotting a tranquil bay. Ignore everything you read about crowds of boats, polluted water and all - the beauty of this place overpowers everything.
Make sure you take a one night cruise; a day cruise is too rushed. If you book through your hotel you pay higher, but it is worth saving the hassle. You are on a holiday to enjoy, after all.
The cruises try to pack your time with activities - most on-board activities like cooking classes, tai chi etc can be given a miss. Use that time on the sundeck, soaking up the atmosphere and the sunset.

The view is of Halong Bay is marvellous. Like the kayaking and visiting the cave! Special thanks to the tour guide Nguyen Van Thinh (Bryan) & also Bobby. Bryan helped us take photos, and lend me some cash to buy coconut water! He is very patient to explain whenever we asked questions! Thanks Bryan. His service is highly recommended! Tour guide is required bcos many locals do not understand and speaking English at all!

Obviously very touristy but beautiful nonetheless. Pick a little more expensive tour so you don't have to sit on a boat with 100+ people.
Went during off season and even then it was pretty packed. I got lucky to arrive before all the "big boats" and leave when those arrived. Book a tour with Sapa.travel!!

Halong Bay is a fantastic trip. We had the boat booked for our tour group (10 people) We had a great time aboard the boat. The accommodation was of a very high standard. The chef was amazing and the food was excellent. We had a workshop showing us how to make fish net decoration from carrots and the flowers from carrot and cucumber. The staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for you. If you have a chance to take one of the cruises it is worth it. We were also taken to the boats that take you through the caves, which are stunning. The only downside is the number of properties being built along the quayside. I hope they don't spoil this lovely area.

I am planning to do a 3 day 2 night cruise with my mum for her 60th. How can I tell if a cruise will go to new areas each day without dropping off passengers who booked a one night cruise? Are there any cruises you can recommend that stay out the entire time without changing guests? Thank you

Do you actually spend the night out on the water anchored? It would be great to get a sunrise and sunet photo from out in the water.

Hi John, sorry for the long delay in answering your question, but I haven't visited Tripadvisor for a while due to not having travelled overseas since lockdown began.
Our trip included an overnight stay in Halong Bay, on a junk boat, and I have to admit I was sceptical regarding how comfortable that would be. It turned out to be the highlight of a ten-week trip that took in 11 different countries.
This particular part of the trip was a 17 day tour through Vietnam and Cambodia, arranged through G-Adventures, which began when we met with other travellers in Hanoi and our overnight at Halong Bay was on our second day in Vietnam.
I can't recommend it highly enough. Waking up in the morning, with a view of the karsts from our bedroom window, was breathtaking. The beds were great and the food onboard was excellent. I can't fault it in any way. I've uploaded loads of photos taken onboard the junk boat and hopefully you can find some of them to see what I'm talking about.
If I can answer anything more specifically, please feel free to ask. I promise to check in here more frequently in future.

My wife and I are planning a 2d/1n Halong Bay cruise with Dragon's Pearl in March. I chatted with one of Indochina Junk's customer support agents on their website and was quoted $185 per person for the trip.
I have read elsewhere on Trip Advisor that I might be better off booking a Halong Bay cruise once I reach Hanoi, as opposed to booking it online in advance. Does this advice apply to cruises booked directly with Indochina Junk as well - i.e. is it really possible to get a much cheaper deal on the Dragon's Pearl after speaking to a travel agent in Hanoi than if I booked online directly with the company?
Thanks for your help!

I just recently spent 3D2N in Ambassadors Cruise and I must sayit is worth the experience. Whether you are to book with a travel agency or by yourself, it would be a good deal being with Ambassadors Cruise as the staff are so friendly and accommodating
Our family of 5 took the one day 4/5 hour lunch cruise at Ha Long Bay. Our hotel in Haiphong kindly connected us to a wonderful, safe driver, Huu and our host, Thao. We recommend leaving around 10:30am from Haiphong to avoid the foggy morning and to enjoy a clearer view of the islets. We stopped along the way to an oyster pearl shop, where they demonstrated how to culture pearls. The lunch on the cruise was wonderful. It was not just fish and seafood but also meat too. A good variety. We also had the chance to go kayaking or ride on a bamboo small boat paddled by men who brought us to two beautiful caves in the waters. Don’t forget to tip them. We got back onto the same boat and stopped at two walking caves. Bring your older sneakers. It felt like a good hike. Our host, Thao, took us to two amazing caves. We even tried some special local ice cream sold only in Ha Long Bay. Our kids loved it and wished we tried it again after the cruise was finished. This place is about 1 1/2 hours drive from Haiphong. Better to stay around here than come from Hanoi unless you plan to do the 2 night cruise.
One day for about 4-5 hours was plenty to see for our family of five: 2 adults, 2 older teens, and a preschooler. We were pretty tired afterwards, but this was definitely the highlight of our time while we were staying in Haiphong.
Tickets for 5 cost us about $373.00 USD.. If you enjoy the ocean, you will find this very relaxing.

Can you suggest a good cruise on a decent budget for 3D1N?? Also, is 3D1N cruise worth it or should I just cut it to 2D1N?

reclim is correct. However, here is something else to consider.
There are generally two ways to drive. Although we had a private tour for most of our trip, our tour company transferred us from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay via a group van. We only had one other couple in the van so that was not an issue. However, the van makes two stops on the way, supposedly for bathroom breaks but each stop is at a giant tourist souvenir venue, each stop is 40-45 minutes instead of one ten minute stop, or no stop if you don't need a bathroom break at all. They pick you up at 8 am, it is a 2 hour drive non-stop but with the breaks it is 3 1/2 hours. The boat loads at around 2 pm as I recall. Undoubtedly, the van gets paid to stop at the giant souvenir shops, so your ride is longer but cheaper than a taxi.
Second, because of the route of the souvenir shops, it is a more local route with lots of traffic and traffic lights, usually two lanes in each direction, the right lane being mainly for motorbikes. The drive is constantly going in the lane of oncoming traffic to pass cars and trucks. It is hair raising but fun. Fasten your seat belt tightly. On the other hand, if you have a private taxi or car and are willing to pay more in tolls, you can drive on a highway that takes much less time, which means you can leave at 11 am and get there before 1 pm/1300 to check in way before 2 pm/1400.
So you need to consider how you want to go, leave at 8 am on local roads with sales shop stops and other passengers for less money, or go on a seer highway and pay much more, I don't know how much.

We used Huong Hai Sea Life cruise. Great crew, they adapted very well to our food requests of no meat, pork, chicken, with more vegetarian and squid or fish dishes. They have options to kayak, visit the cave, and visit the fishing village. Unless you love to kayak, the trip to the fishing village is in a large rowboat with 6 passengers, and the boats row as closely to the little mountains as kayaks do, so you don't miss much by not kayaking.
The fishing village trip is well worthwhile in scenery as well as culturally. Be prepared to tip the rower. The cave is not a particularly interesting cave, if you've ever seen a cave before, but it is easy to do, so might as well.
From what I can tell, the ships are similar in that they have a lower restaurant level, a couple of levels of rooms/berths, then a top open deck level for other activities and a bar. All of this is very nice, except if you are on the level below the top level, you will hear people walking, dancing or jumping during 6 am morning Tai Chi, so I would recommend asking for a level closer to the bottom level than the top level. Otherwise you will have a hard time getting to sleep, especially on New Yeats Eve, unless you are the last to go to sleep, and you will be awakened as we were at 5:45 a.m. as people assembled for morning Tai Chi or to watch the early dawn, and you may prefer to sleep late after New Years Eve instead of be awakened by whoever gets up early to go on the top deck.
One last thing. There is wifi on the boat. If you want to connect, you may find as I did that certain parts of the boat have a stronger signal than other parts, in our case the front was better than the middle or back.

Hi,
I’ll be in Ha Long Bay to run a half marathon on Nov 24. I’m staying 2 nights, Friday and Saturday on Nov 22 and 23. I’ll be leaving on Sunday afternoon of Nov 24.
Can anyone recommend an area to stay? AirBnB have several spots in different high rises. I’m primarily looking for an area that are nearby to open markets, food and cafes. Easy walking distance and good scenery nearby is a plus. I’m not interested in high energy night life. I’m traveling with my 65 year old uncle.
Also, can anyone recommend a boat tour on Saturday Nov 23? It can be up to no more 5-6 hours.
Thanks you Trip Advisor Community!!

I apologise for my delay and note that you would have already gone there so I hope that you had a wonderful time, the Vietnamese people are very friendly and helpful. The airport is also a good place to ask for good accommodation from the Information Centre as they are a font of good advice.
