About
Soi Dog Foundation is S.E. Asia’s largest rescue organisation for vulnerable stray dogs and cats. For 20 years, supported by generous donations and global volunteers, SDF has worked tirelessly to reduce animal suffering through CNVR (Catch; Neuter; Vaccinate; Return) programmes. For animals unable to be returned safely to the streets, SDF provides sanctuary, as well as local and international adoption services. SDF is a haven where sick and vulnerable dogs and cats receive world-class medical care, and love. SDF is working in several countries to help end the inhumane and barbaric dog meat trade. Guided tours available Monday-Friday at 10:00am and 1:30pm. Following the 40-minute tour, visitors are encouraged to socialise with our lovely cats and dogs. Impromtu tours are not available between 11:30am and 1:00pm, although between these times, visitors are invited to socialise in the cattery or spend time in the visitor centre. Volunteers are welcome Monday to Friday from 9am.

Went during the rainy period of 30th of Sept 2022. One of the best part of my whole trip in Phuket.
A very calm and tranquil location for animals whom are in need of recuperation and relaxation. My wonderful guide Ms Jenny who is just 7 months into her job was able to explain in detail of every single animal’s story and remember their names to tell me. Even with 3 clinics/ hospitals, they are still brimming with patients and would very much require assistance from those who can provide.
The animals are housed very safely as their temperaments are well understood by their volunteers and staff making it easy for them to mingle and relax in their habitat.
I recommend that you contact Soi Dog either through or social media before going as they will be able to provide you with contacts of people who can bring you from the airport to Soi Dog Foundation. As this was my first part of the trip, I had engaged help this way.
One thing I hope is that they can have more variety in their merchandises and crafts, so that I can spend more in this way to support them too.
In whole, I feel that every human being that has a thought to help and support animals worldwide, should visit the Soi Dog Foundation during their trip in Phuket.

Dear Bloodroses,
Thank you for visiting Soi Dog and the wonderful review.
Every resident cat and dog here has a unique story of their own, and Jenny loves to share some of these with our visitors.
Although we currently have about 1,700 animals at the shelter, each one is treated as an individual to ensure their needs are met every day.
We appreciate your feedback regarding the merchandise. If you look online there is even more choice available, as some of the stock is easier to source and supply in other countries.
We hope you can visit again one day!
Best wishes.

My partner and I found this a really fulfilling and eye-opening experience.
Soi Dog Foundation is doing incredible work to improve the lives of stray and unwanted dogs (and also cats) in Phuket. The staff seemed very devoted to their work and were incredibly comprehensive in explaining the scale of the issue of stray animals and the awful associated activities that they strive to protect them from (dog meat trade, mutilation, cultural killing), as well as all aspects of the animals’ lives before and in their care.
The tour was great and it was lovely to play with puppies and cats but the most important thing was that the facility was never presented as a “paradise” for animals, rather a crucial place of refuge for animals in need.
Despite the urgent need for financial support, we were never hassled for money. However, we left a cash donation and my partner is going to sponsor a dog. Would happily recommend to others visiting Phuket to swing by and support their work

Dear 25moriartyK,
Thank you for visiting Soi Dog and leaving such great feedback.
It is important that people see for themselves that the shelter is not a play park for the animals, and that we can only accommodate those who are too vulnerable to survive in the community. We hope to find loving homes for as many of the animals as possible, so we can continue to help even more.
We really appreciate your generous donation, and sponsoring one of our dogs. Soi Dog would not be able to continue to do such important work without kind people like yourselves!
Best wishes.

Fill your cup up with puppy cuddles and kitty snuggles! This place is incredible. Started by a married couple from the UK 20 years ago with an amazing story. The Soi Dog Foundation takes care of the Phuket dogs and cats in a way that makes you want to give greatly to what they do. I highly recommend attending their free daily tours so you really get the grasp of what is going on with this organization. PLUS, as I mentioned you get the opportunity to receive loads of love.

Dear Lstpierre2012,
Thank you for visiting us at Soi Dog and kindly leaving a review.
The cats and puppies enjoy playing and cuddling with our visitors, and this is always the highlight of the tour.
Educating our visitors about the work Soi Dog does to improve the lives of dogs and cats in Asia is also very important to us.
We hope to welcome you back again one day!
Best wishes.

Travelled 1 hour to visit from Patong but was worth the journey.
This charity has grown in size each year and the cost to keep it going also increase.
Check out their website for guided tour times.
Heart-rending videos of street cats and dogs being helped will hopefully show you the work this great charity continues up do.
Have now sponsored animals on seeing 1st hand what is needed to help.

Dear steviegee1966,
Thank you for visiting Soi Dog and leaving such a positive review!
As you saw for yourself, the growth in numbers of animals in our care means more support is needed.
Thank you so much for being a Soi Dog sponsor, which enables us to continue to help more cats and dogs.
We hope to see you again one day!

We arrived late and missed the main tour (check the website for times), but we were able to do a shorter tour with Jenny, who took the two of us around and showed us the facility. We got to meet a few of the dogs and play with them, which was so nice. We also got to see the puppy run (we couldn’t actually play with them as the weather was bad so they don’t let them out, so they don’t get muddy and wet and end up with skin infections), and all the little puppies laying around napping. So sweet! At the end we went in and played with the cats in their enclosures which was also really nice. Jenny was an amazing guide and it was so beautiful how much she obviously loves all the dogs, knows them by name, and their personalities (this one is shy, that one is friendly, that one is scared of people so don’t touch etc). We also had a lovely long chat to Silvia at the reception. Seeing how much the staff care about and believe in the work they do speaks for itself. The organisation is incredible, they have reduced the street dog population in Phuket significantly with their catch-neuter-return program, and they currently care for around 2000 dogs and 400 cats. 10000/10, please visit/donate/volunteer if you can! They also have lots of really nice merch you can buy for presents/souvenirs, and as the tour is free you can go crazy 😉
Thank you Jenny, Silvia and Soi Dog ❤️

Dear ciamelol,
We are sorry to hear you missed the main tour, but we are pleased you were able to do a shorter tour and still see the facilities and the dogs and cats.
All of the staff here are very passionate about improving the lives of cats and dogs in Asia. The 1,200 dogs and 400 cats in the care of Soi Dog are all unique characters with their own stories and personalities, which Jenny and Silvia love to share with our visitors.
Although the bad weather meant no puppy play, we are happy you were able to spend time with our super friendly and cuddly cats!
Thank you for spreading the word about Soi Dog, we really do rely on the support of kind people like yourself.
We hope you can return and play with the puppies one day!
Best wishes.

We had a wonderful tour guide whose name I didn’t quite catch (Italian lady with fab piercings and tattoos!). Hearing her speak about the work of Soi Dog and her passion for the animals made it clear this is a very very special place. This was my favourite part of my trip to Phuket and highly recommend everyone stops by to see the work this impressive organisation is doing. The staff know each animal by name and their personalities, you clearly have to love animals and have an amazing memory to work here! Although there is obviously upsetting information about the mistreatment of animals the whole day felt very uplifting and inspiring. There was no pressure to donate but you are going to want to.

By far the best experience my girlfriend and I had the pleasure of doing in Phuket. We registered to come and volunteer for the day on April 12th, and were welcomed with open arms by the volunteer staff. They were seriously dedicated to the cause and it produced an infectiously good vibe around the shelter.
We filled in our paperwork and ordered our lunch for the day, then set away walking dogs, two at a time, in turn around the many acres of land. Chrissie escorted us and showed us the ropes for the first one. The dogs in A4 were amazing, very different temperaments, some were placid, some were full of energy. The enclosure staff were amazing at handling the dogs during changeover. At 11.30 we had lunch, and had time to visit the cat sanctuary which helped fill in time during the 1.5hr lunch break.
The facilities were incredible and it gives testament given the amount of revenue Soi Dog generates, and their clever allocation of resources to ensure the wellbeing of the animals is of the highest standard. They have 6 off-leash pens, a large space to walk the dogs on-leash and a swimming pool to combat dogs overheating in the hot Thai weather.
We had chance to contribute also by buying some merch from their shop at the reception.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable and meaningful day in Phuket.

Dear 906jonnyb,
Thank you for volunteering at Soi Dog and leaving such a glowing review!
The A4 dogs will have benefited so much from the time you spent walking and socialising with them. All of our dogs have such unique personalities as you got to see for yourself.
The swimming pool was recently gifted to Soi Dog by one very kind donor. We love to see the dogs playing, cooling own and exercising in there!
Thank you for spreading the word about Soi Dog. We could not continue to do such important work without the support of kind people like yourselves.
We hope to see you both again one day!

If you want to volunteer book two days in advance!!!
A great sanctuary for cats and dogs. Sick dogs and cats get treated and nursed back to health. Also they neuter a lot of stray dogs. They are controlling the populația of strays and in time will mean stray dogs won't cause any problems in Thailand.
The programs that this organisation is setting up in Asia are very welcome. They try to abolish the dog meat trade and are doing a very good job in educating people of different countries about the abuse that the animals in this trade go trough.
Thanks for a great tour

Dear 655nk,
Thank you for visiting Soi Dog and leaving a review.
Sterilisation is one of the most important projects carried out by Soi Dog, to reduce overpopulation and suffering. Many of the cats and dogs who are sterilised need to stay for additional treatment, and some stay at the shelter indefinitely.
Finding forever homes for the dogs and cats is very important, to avoid overcrowding at the shelter. And because a loving home is what they all deserve.
Since successfully helping the government end the dog meat trade in Thailand, Soi Dog is now supporting other countries to end this trade that is responsible for the death of so many dogs and cats in Asia.
As we have so many dogs here who need to be walked, we always need volunteers. Booking is possible just one day in advance, but we do ask volunteers to commit to two full days of dogs walking.
Thank you so much for spreading the word about all of the important work Soi Dog is doing to help dogs and cats in Asia.
Best wishes.

We visited the Soi Dog Foundation since unfortunately we did not have the time to volunteer during this trip. What a mistake!!! Now I have to come back in order to volunteer! The work this foundation does is entirely nonprofit, and 100% incredible. There is almost too much love to receive from the dogs and cats, and not enough love to give back. You can immediately tell that these dogs (and cats) have found a wonderful second chance at life, that only Soi Dog can offer them.
Soon after we arrived, we were greeted by some of the friendliest dogs, out for walks with their volunteers. We were given a run down on the work that happens within the foundation: from capture and release (after sterilization, rabies and other meds) to rehabilitation, or even a life long home for some of the animals. The Foundation runs a 24hr emergency vet, and unfortunately, it is necessary. Many animals arrive in dire condition, but because of Soi Dog, they’re saved and given love they’ve never had. Soi Dog also worked with the Thai government in order to stop the dog meat trade in Thailand, wow.
We were then given a tour of the place, how the different runs are divided, from shy dogs, to older dogs, and even puppies! We met Mirko first, the sweetest girl and a double amputee (also up for adoption!!) and then we were able to play with the cats. I’m not a cat person due to allergies, but I couldn’t resist, so many friendly buddies!!
The highlight was the puppy run, where we were allowed to play with around 10 puppies. A couple of the pups were a bit nervous and not too excited to meet you, but there was no lack of pups ready to jump on you! My heart is full and happy!
Thank you John and Gill for seeing a problem and finding a way to fix it. Thank you Soi Dog for continuing Gill’s legacy, and changing the lives of animals who never deserved the hardships they’ve faced. Thank you for all of the hard work, effort and love that’s put into this. Thank you for doing all that you can to save the street dogs of Thailand.
If possible, I truly would recommend looking into volunteering rather than just visiting. I know we’ll be back.

Dear Fsmeezy,
Thank you for visiting Soi Dog and the wonderful review.
Our dogs and cats love to welcome our visitors with cuddles! For the more shy animals it is good for them to meet new people and build their confidence, as this increases their chance of adoption.
As you heard for yourself Soi Dog does so much to improve the lives of dogs and cats in Asia. This would not be possible without the support of kind people like yourself.
We do hope you can return to volunteer one day, the dogs and cats will be eagerly waiting to welcome you back!
Best wishes.

My partner and I visited early January 2022 and had a great experience, everyone was welcoming and was great to hear about the amazing work the foundation does. The tour itself was free however we could not leave without making a donation and will certainly be looking to make monthly contributions on our return home. You can clearly see the animals are well cared for and that everyone involved cares deeply for them. Only downside was we could not meet the puppies properly as they were in quarantine for the duration of our time in phuket, hopefully one day we can return

Thank you for visiting us, and kindly leaving a donation. Soi Dog would not be able to continue helping so many animals without people like yourself.
We are so pleased you had an enjoyable experience, and got to see how important the care of the animals is to all of us at Soi Dog.
Sorry to here your visit was at the same time as the puppies being in quarantine, this was for the safety of all of the dogs at Soi Dog. They are now out of quarantine and enjoying lots of attention from our visitors.
We also hope you can return one day and get to visit the puppies then!
Best wishes.

Hello, does anyone know anything about a group called 'Dog Meat Survivor' or 'Dog Meat Savior?' (They have used both names, and they called themselves the 'Humane Society' for a short time. They don't reply to my queries, and I find their customer service phone contact number rather odd. I worry some groups are preying on people who want to help save these dogs and simply scamming people out of their donations. I've contacted other animal welfare groups with this question. No one has responded. Can anyone shed any light on any of these groups?

Hi Sebastian,
And sorry for the late reply!
We are always in need of a variety of items. We have over 1,000 dogs and 350 cats, so things like leads, toys and poo bags are always very much appreciated!
You can find a full wish list of items on the Soi Dog website under 'How You Can Help > Donate Supplies'.
Thanks so much!

I am wondering, when one US dollar is worth 30 baht why 29 us dollars only cares for one dog for one month? Seem like the exchange rate would go further to care for the animals.
Sam M

Dear Robin,
$29 is the amount to sponsor a dog here at Soi Dog Foundation. For this, you receive regular updates throughout the year from your sponsor dog, including photos and updates. The information on the sponsor page on our website also states that your monthly subscription fee also goes not only towards your sponsor dog but also towards helping other animals under the care of Soi Dog.
We hope this helps!
Many thanks.

I am wondering who pays the air fares (& a volunteer escorting animal?) for the many (dogs) that are adopted by Canadians & USA people. I know they are fantastic animal parents! But this ads alot to the costs of adoption. Have been doing alot of reading re your rescue and considering a bequest in my will when I rewrite it shortly. Keep up your great work. You obviously do an amazing job - with lots .... & lots .... of free spay/neutering. The only way we are going to make any dent in the unwanted/homeless/stray animal problem the world over. Not enough (PRIVATE VETS) perform enough of these services - FOR FREE (or just a few $$$ to cover medications/equipment used.) Best wishes to you all. Victoria Pinkerton.

Dear Victoria,
Firstly, thank you so much for considering Soi Dog in your legacy plans. This is a truly wonderful gesture.
And, to answer your question about flight volunteers and adopted animals - The travel costs of animals from Soi Dog and travelling overseas are covered by the adopter. This includes the excess baggage fee that the animals travel under, the travel crate, and any administrative fees ( dictated by the airline and import/export authorities). The costs associated with the flight volunteer (airline tickets etc) are covered by the flight volunteer themselves. We hope this helps! Many thanks.
Victoria P

Who pays for all the flights for animals and does a volunteer escort each animal? I understand an animal could not be sent on such a long flight (typically Thailand to USA or Canada) alone - particularly an animal who has known ill-treatment and has 'issues' with people - poor little things. It is wonderful you have so many international odopters & seem to place so many dogs to Canada etc. Bless you all for the work you do in saving & loving so many animals. I am certainly seriously considering a bequest in my will to Soi Dog foundation.
