But some things to know before you go. First of all, if you're staying in the most popular spots on Phuket, Mai Khao Beach is far. Really far. Which means expensive. And that's if your driver knows where he's going. My brainless driver always seemed to take the slowest way possible even when I kept pointing out a better way on Google maps. Secondly, only about half the year do planes land from the sea side. If they're taking off into the sea side, it's not as spectacular. Planes like to land into the wind, and also take off into the wind. Seems counterintuitive, but that's the way it is. You can look up why. The dry season is best for this here. The other half of the year, the winds blow the wrong way. Check wind direction that day before you come all the way out here. Also check the plane arrivals schedule, obv. Fortunately, on this mid-morning in December, the weather was nice, the winds aligned, and the planes were landing every 10 minutes or so. Also, the walk to the plane landing spot is long. 800 meters or so if you approach from the South. It looks shorter from the North, but for whatever reason, my driver refused to take me that way. Keep that in mind if you want to see a particular flight. Allow extra time.Visited December 2022Written January 21, 2023

The location is about 15 minutes drive from the airport. I visited by motorbike. It takes about an hour from my hotel in Patong Beach. It is possible to go near the view spot by motorbike. If you visit by car, walk about 10 minutes from the parking lot.Visited December 2022Written January 30, 2023

But it is better to know arrival time of the planes, in other case you can wait too long. The nice photos you can take only with arriving planes, departing are flying too highVisited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 4, 2023

This beach is beautiful and has a gorgeous sunset, but I don’t recommend it for swimming. The waves are very rough, and right now they have jellyfish in the water. It’s not a very good beach to walk on, as the sand is course but soft so your feet sink easily. It is close to Turtle Village and many of the resorts are on this beach.

Pros: One of the less crowded beaches especially away from the runway. Everyone is huddle up to take pics of the airplanes. Sand in water is nice and soft if u walk out to where the water hits ur waist. Good food by vendors I recommend the mango smoothies and chicken.
Cons: No beach umbrellas and not much shaded spots during high noon.
I'd recommend to anyone who wants a beach day and likes to airplane watch

went here for plane spotting.
I didn’t realize planes don’t land there all the time - it is seasonal so this time of year they only take off from the beach which is cool but the planes don’t get as close.
quite a lot of people waiting to get a good photo with the plane over the top.
got a bolt there but you can’t get dropped right at the plane watching area as the roads are restricted due to it being behind at the airport - so you have to walk quite a bit and getting a bolt back is difficult as all the cars are on the other side of the airport so it’s a 15min drive to fetch you from the north side so i def recommend getting dropped off/parking and getting picked up at the south side of the airport along the beach at sirinat national park playground area -
recommend for plane enthusiasts!!

We wanted to see the planes coming into land from the beach and you get a great view from the beach. We cycled there and we were able to get right onto the beach. If you drive there you will have to park and either walk or hire a taxi to get you near the beach. I doubt it will cost a lot as it’s a 5 mins taxi ride.

This is one of our favourite locations in the world. Mai Khao is a beautiful 7-mile beach that is usually deserted. The sea can be a little rough for swimming and the sand can be hard to walk on, but this dramatic beachfront with forest backdrop is our idea of heaven.

this is the place where u can get close to seeing airplanes landing at Phuket airport. it's situated at the end of the runway towards Mao Kao beach. very deserted area. due to the pandemic, there isn't many planes coming in to phuket so if u r going there to spot the airplanes, pls check the schedule for planes landing else u gonna waste your time there.

Beautiful beach. You can see the takeoffs and landings from there. Note that this is far from the city center and the Patong. Drive about 50 minutes

We stayed at the JW Marriott near Mai Khao beach. The resort staff is courteous and always ready to please. Some of the restaurant staff could have been a little more attentive to diners. The Marriott breakfast buffet can only be described as a feast for every traveler from around the world. Chef Andrea of the Italian restaurant made every effort to introduce himself and make recommendations for our dinners. The pool staff, particularly at the adult pools, was amazing. The short walk to the ocean thru sand that I can describe as "fine as baking flour", was pleasant. There are many water flotation, sailboats, kayaks and paddle boards to use. The concierge was always wiling to help in scheduling excursions off the resort. I was not particularly fond of the elephant event. I found myself being sad for the elephants. Our best exclusion included a speedboat ride to Similan Island, snorkeling around a chosen few islands, lunch and hike up to the Sailboat and Donald Duck rock formations.
Hope my opinions and comments help you out. Enjoy...safe travels

Hiya, I’m looking to book a holiday to the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa for the beginning of December. I’ve read a few reviews and it has said the Mai Khao beach can be a bit rough and not swimable. As I am going with my two year old I just wanted to know how the beach is in December ?

if you mean shops, no
a few restos and convenience shops
more bigger shops, supermarket, a street or 2 back from the beach

Hi there, Are you able to swim at Mai Khao beach in January, especially children? I've read about a large ledge, drop off. Do you think this is an issue if so? We are coming from Sydney. Many thanks.

Beaches are good at that time of year. From May through to September they can be quite rough and not swimmable. We have pulled up and swum at many beaches all the way along that side of coastline and have not had an issue and except for the one time in September when surf was just too rough. We usually only swim quite close to the shore and have not been exposed to rips or anything but with kids safest option is to swim where they have lifeguards
