I can understand some of the frustrated reviews, I use to spend 5 years there and each year got worse even before covid. If you know Phuket very well you will find also nice people and nice areas. But seems like the put zero effort to get tourists, even the Phuket Thai Pass is disorganized, the don't care if you come or not :( Thought Tourist is big income source in Phuket ?

Positives:
I've been to Phuket on 4 occasions now, and I like it here very much. There are some beautiful beaches, ( once you get away from Patong ), fantastic restaurants directly on the beach and friendly, helpful people.
Of course, they try to get you into their establishment, be it a restaurant, massage parlour or shop ... but that's only to be expected. It is a tourist location.
I always rent a small motorbike to get around, since I don't want to be at the mercy of the 'taxi mafia'. This gives me the freedom to drive around to the different beaches and enjoy the freedom of the exciting roads connecting them.
I would recommend Ban Tao, Nai Harn and Kamala Beaches. They are less crowded and more relaxing. They are also a lot cleaner than the more popular beaches in Patong and Karon.
I stay at 'cheap' hotels, since I think the service is more personal and you get looked after better. My hotel this year cost just 420Euro for 13 nights. The room is 35sqm, with balcony and only a few metres from Kamala Beach. Whilst it's not luxurious, it has everything I need. Plus, I spend most of my time out, so why pay more ?

Negatives:
By FAR the biggest problem is police corruption. If you ride a motorbike, they will always find something to fine you for. Normally it's not wearing a helmet, no international license or anything else they can think of. I was once fined for wearing flip flops ... in Thailand!
I fear this problem is getting bigger and bigger every year, The police make literally millions from fining tourists, so I don't see that it's gonna stop any time soon. For this reason, this trip will be my last to Phuket. I've never experienced any problems on other islands or locations in Thailand. It's just here! The fact that they do it so openly leads me to believe that the corruption runs all the way to the top.
There are other smaller issues, like over-crowded, chaotic roads and as mentioned before, the 'taxi mafia', especially at the airport. But these issues pall into insignificance compared to the truly horrible experience of dealing with the police.

Generally, I would recommend Phuket. Stay somewhere towards the north of the peninsula and keep far away from Patong. Then you'll have a lovely holiday.

We were 3 friends and family had 11 days holidays at Thailand. We stayed at Pattaya, Phuket and Bangkok. The best of all these places was Phuket. The beaches and places at Phuket is simply awesome and a must visit.
The only thing to check is the hotel stay. When anyone book the hotel please check for the numbers persons in one room. All the portals will allow you to add the number of persons to be accommodated in one room but on arrival at the hotel, they will tell that they will not allow more than 3 persons and charge you extra for every extra person. They will also charge for complimentary breakfast as well. Further, the hotel will collect a security money of 1000 Baht per room which is refundable. You will also be charged for eating any snacks and beverages kept in the room except the tea and coffee. One must enquire few tour agents and negotiate the rate before finalizing for any sight seeing tours. Phi Phi Island, James Bond Island, Aonang, etc. at Phuket are awesome and a must see.

If you love beaches and friendly people, this is great. You need to barter for goods (expected) if you want a really good deal but whether you do or not, prices are very cheap.
Wine is not an alcohol cheaply come by but can be purchased but cheaper to buy beers or cocktails.
Most Thai can speak some English, especially if they are dealing with tourists and you can make yourself undestood most times.
We stayed at Kata Beach which was AWESOME and a 20 minute drive to central Phuket and markets. Cost by car / van to get to Phuket approx $20 NZD each way.
Heaps to do from Kata Beach and economic.
Weather was warm (high 20's low 30's) but October still can be rainy.

Nai Yang Beach.
Once a beautiful, quiet village with a serene beach.
As nothing stays the same, so it is here. Massive growth in condos and apartments mean that the village is now packed and over crowded. The size and quantity.of the still under construction buildings is staggering.
The few restaurants and bars are struggling under the strain of mass tourism.
The vast majority of people here are Russian and they all have very young children with them.
The beach is very much overloaded with families and sadly the once idyllic beach now reeks from the locals' constant use of cannabis and loud music is broadcast from the bars behind the beach from 10.30 every morning.
As a place to transit before your flight it is bearable but it has lost its charm as a place to stay.

Some places are good like phi phi island. We found good vegetarian restaurants.
There is racism towards Indian travelers which i haven't seen even in advanced countries like USA or Australia. The shopkeepers are extremely rude, ask you to just go even even if you ask for discount once. It happened almost with every shopkeeper we talked to except one or two. They say things like can't you understand English, X amount means X amount. And they will drool over white travellers.
Indians spend a lot of money visiting thailand and it's not worth it if it costs you self respect and you can't expect basic decent behaviour as a customer.

Restaurants and food are good, beaches are good, but everywhere you go you feel how money minded people are. Don't expect free water anywhere, whether restaurants or some hotels.

I would

Pullman is a very good hotel we had a very good experience there. The Indian chef Mr.Raju is so kind and so nice he gave us so homely treatment we felt that we are home or at home only because he was asking us about what we will eat and how comfortable we are. We had a very good lifetime experience Thanks @pullmanpanwaphuket.

If you're Australian, early 20s and not with a group of people don't go! This is not a safe place to be.

Many locals overcharged exorbitant prices and
were rude. They're only after your money and to rip you off and all the good locals must stay in other areas. Bartenders also spike your drinks.

Police plant drugs on you and force you to pay fines or go to jail. Police were pulling foreigners over in their tuktuks late at night and forcing them to pay fines or risk going to jail... the fine had to be paid and left on the ground under a rock and they wouldn't take it in hand and risk being videod.. I was pulled over and they said I had sleeping pills which were illegal but are available without a prescription from the local chemist and fined $1,000 AUD which I had to drop on the floor under a rock or risk getting taken to jail. They took all my stuff ransom while I went to my hotels ATM..

Being alone with 6 officers in uniform forcing you to pay money or go to jail leaves you with little choice and my fight was the next morning and I couldn't risk it. Way to ruin a trip that was already lackluster and it's no wonder they're so corrupt.. taking my money and the other foreigners that night would've made them a killing and i lost all respect for this country.

DO NOT GO!!!

I visited Thailand Phucket i stayed for a week I had the greatest experience ever and the time of my life. All the hotels are gorgeous and even tho it's a small amount of people their that speaks English they are still very nice and accommodating. There were two tours I took the James Bond island and the phi phi island tour. They both are about 8 hour tours but are full of fun and experiences. I went to tiger kingdom where you get to see al size tigers and take pictures with them. I went to the beach to see the elephants and take pictures in the water with them as well. Most people are scared there is nothing good to eat there since it's on the other side of the world but Thailand food was really good it's not one thing I ate that wasn't tasteful. The night life their is entertaining they have a strip where its many bars and clubs so you can bar hop for free. I overall enjoyed the whole trip
