I have two very differing opinions on Pattaya's EJS. So, here we go! Starting with the good. I think it needs to be made clear that, as of the time of our visit, there wasn't any riding at this sanctuary. This is key when considering which elephant sanctuaries to visit. The main hut contains a lot of information about the dangers of riding elephants and the staff seems very concerned about the welfare of the animals. You have the opportunity to learn and ask questions during your time there. The facility is nice - you have access to showers and changing areas, great food, lots of space, and everything is clean. Because they have sustainability practices, you also get to make paper through their poop recycling program. I also got to snuggle with the cutest little Thai puppy. The elephants appear to be well cared for. I didn't notice any bullhooks or any forced behavior from the mahouts. They had access to shade, water, and food. I also appreciated that the crowd on the day of our visit was kept somewhat small. They also claim they have rescued all of the elephants in their care. On the flipside, I am still on the fence about the ethics in bathing elephants. While I understand that they like a bath and mud, they would not have this slathered on them by people day after day in the wild. What "training" was implemented to get them to go tolerate this part of the visit? Many other sanctuaries are doing away with the baths all together. If EJS insists on continuing with this questionable practice here is one major change I would suggest: HAVE THE TOURISTS RINSE OFF PRIOR TO ENTERING THE MUD PIT/BATHING POOL!!!! Think about it - you are encouraging people to cover themselves in sunscreen and bug spray upon arrival and then you direct them all to get into mud/water pools with the elephants. I am certain that having elephants bathe in an environment that is continually loaded with chemicals is not healthy for the animals. Please, if nothing else, just make this one change!

I loved spending time with the elephants. I was able to feed and bathe them. It was a once in a lifetime experience. It was nice that they take pictures for you. Also, the food they served was my favorite meal in Thailand! Please do this experience.

The animals seemed to be treated well, we only came there to feed them and show small kids this amazing animal. We had a good few hours getting very close to them. It was a bit expensive, but for a good cause helping these elephants.
