- Claire F24 contributionsSea to roughI visited Lamai beach whilst on holiday in Koh Samui and left after only a couple of hours as the sea was so rough there. I like to swim and am a strong swimmer but didn’t feel comfortable in the water there. Because the sea is rough it wasn’t so clean and neither was the beach as a lot of debris was washed up onto the shore. On the plus side the sunbeds are free at a lot of the beach clubs so long as you buy some food and drinks. There is another beach in Lamai called Crystal Bay which I would recommend as the sea is much calmer and clearer and the sand is like powder but there were no sunbeds available. The photo’s are of Crystal Bay.Visited March 2020Traveled with friendsWritten March 11, 2020
- lee aSheffield, United Kingdom676 contributionsBusy beachWe was hear for only a few hours, so only time for a couple of stops, our cruise company said go to this beach, to be honest it’s a busy commercial one , would of preferred a local quiet one, both sand and sea clean and plenty of sun beds you can hire with lots of places to eat and drink on offer. We found a local vendor further up on the beach selling spring rolls and doughnuts for a very cheap price. Nice place to relax for a short while even if a bit crowded.Visited January 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten March 26, 2020
- WayneBangkok, Thailand55 contributionsEmpty beach!Visited with the family. Beach was deserted and had most of it to ourselves. Lovely little area rented out sunbeds free if you ate or drank and prices were very reasonable. Water slopes slowly so my 3 year old could play safely. Water very calm and waves just bobbed slightly. Lovely way to spend a day.Visited April 2021Traveled with familyWritten April 5, 2021

- Springer114Herefordshire, United Kingdom573 contributionsFirst time on Lamia beach and very happy with the fantastic views and soft sandThe beach has very soft beautiful sand with lovely trees as a backdrop for excellent pictures and shade. There are plenty off bars and restaurants to use with free sun-beds as long as you have drinks etc. There was a little litter where the rough sea had washed it up but the local restaurant cleans it up as fast as they can so the beach is soon perfect. I would recommend to all. Oh and you can have massages for very reasonable prices as you chill . What’s not to like....Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 15, 2023
- Mark JAdelaide, Australia957 contributionsBusy beachLamai Beach stretches for several km on Koh Samui's east coat. Lots of hotels and restaurants face up on the beach which is made of very course large sand grains. Very painful to walk on for great distances. You can walk almost the full length - there is the occasional small outlet you need to cross. The water can be rough - but in lost of places there is a sand bar just off shore so you can walk out a far way.Visited December 2019Written January 7, 2020

Ok the weather was windy and big waves but the amount of rubbish, wood, plastics on the beach are not very attractive..... I hope that now Thailand is reopening the resorts on Lamai beach take their responsibility and organize clean ups otherwise the pool villa’s will be the big winners instead of the beach resorts......Visited February 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten February 27, 2022
- StaffieLancs119 contributionsNot cleanThis is the second time we have visited lamai beach. Last time we came was in June 2019. I noticed this time that in February the seas are rougher and that caused lots of debris on the beach. I went round myself picking up 3 bags of plastic and glass bottles plus other horrid things like babies nappies. I feel like every bar/hotel should clean their area of beach as it is very off putting. I even saw someone burying debris in the sand instead of removing it! Unbelievable. The beach would be beautiful with a little care and attention. You have to bear in mind that it has been closed down for 2 years so should be cleaner than it is.Visited February 2022Written February 4, 2022
- Mark S70 contributionsSamui and Phuket are not what they used to be!Gorgeous beaches. But, Samui and Phuket feel like an abandoned waste site right now. They are an astonishing sight. TAT talks about the bustling Lamai and Chaweng areas? They look like post Apocalypse bomb zones, due to a stunningly inept lack of government action. One step away from Chernobyl. Come and see a booked down, abandoned, trashy, burnt out wasteland.Visited May 2021Traveled as a coupleWritten May 20, 2021

I first went to Koh Samui 40 years ago and have been going back now and again ever since, usually staying on Lamai. It was with huge sadness to see the state of this beach that was once so lovely. In all my travels, it is without compare, as the dirtiest beach I've ever set foot on. My wife and I arrived and decided to walk up the beach and I couldn't believe what I saw, in a 1 km stretch, there must have been the best part of a dozen discarded fishing nets and literally thousands of pieces of plastic, you couldn't go a meter without another piece of plastic, bottles and bags and other rubbish. We were in Krabi two weeks ago and the difference is absolutely staggering, the beach at Krabi is clean, people swimming all the time and lying on the beach. For the life of me I can't understand why they don't just clean the beach, it wouldn't take that long you could run a tractor up the beach and get the vast majority of the trash in a day. As for the other aspects of the area, there are a lot of places closed but still plenty of places to eat good food and shop.

I have been many times to Koh Samui and Lamai used to be one of my preferred beach on Koh Samui. I is no longer the case. I spent there 12 days this February. The beach is littered with garbage and the sea is not clean. It was a shame. I don't know if this has to do with Covid when Koh Samui was nearly empty and no one took care of cleaning the beach but the reality is that I do not intend to go back to Koh Samui.
The only option was to go to Crystal Bay which is close and where the water was clean.

What an amazing beach. It is fairly quiet and perfect for a sandy walk or swim in the sea. My friend Charlotte and I came here many a time for a swim and relaxation session. She even got her feet massaged at one point because apparently both our feet were "not pretty".
Plenty of affordable restaurants along the front too.

At this time in March 20121 are the large long grainy patches on the water along the Lamai beach shore stemming from sewerage? Unhealthy to swim.

I was informed that heavy seas at this time churn up the bottom layer of the sea and make the littorals water very cloudy. On the other hand the masseuse said this kind of water damages the skin

Lamai Bech near ”sexy stones” There is also Exelent restaurant with French owner. Not the cheapest but good, free sun lounges right on the beach. Search for Baopab restaurant in Lamai Beach area. Great beach not so much glass because I dive and collect one week in July 2019.

Kerry - you obviously have a knack of attracting negative experiences in life. I take exception to the ridiculous question. Perhaps you need to stay in Glasgow and leave Thailand to people who can see the positives in life. "Books in the running brooks, sermons in stones and good in everything"!

Are there vendors where you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas

Hi, our resort was on the beach and there was plenty of umbrellas and loungers avail.(no cost)
All the resorts had similar along the beach. There are acess points from the road to the hotels and It didn't seem To matter where anyone was sitting for the day.
Bonjour il y a-t-il des combats de boxe thaï sur la plage sur la période de janvier? si quelqu'un peut me renseigner ce serait cool

I'm thinking of going to Thailand in July with my kids, aged 12 and 13 (female). I'm a sole parent and wanted a female perspective on personal safety while you were there.
Many thanks,

Hi,
I am a single parent too and have booked to go in August with my 14 year old daughter. We will have a few days in Bangkok and then fly to Koh Samui for 12 days. I am hoping to use airbnb's, and I am really looking forward to the trip. I have been to Bali and Singapore and never felt threatened or vulnerable.

Will be arriving by cruise ship and have been told Lamai Beach is good.
Would like to know how far it is from the Pier at Nathon and how easy it is to get a taxi and apx fare f known,
Would leave ship probably about 10am and would need to back at pier at 3pm
