We took a tour to Koh Tan to do some snorkelling and to avoid going all the way to Koh Tao from Koh Samui and to avoid the crowds. However, aside from the few fishes we saw near the boat when the tour guide threw some bread in the water, we did not see anything at all! Just brown plants, no colourful coral nor fishes.

We ended up going to Koh Tao on the next day and it was absolutely great. It is really easy to go away from the crowds as people all stay in the same spot near the beach and you justw have to go a bit further to see so much more with no one around. We were with our kids (8 and 11 years old) and they easily followed us.

Thanks to the other Trip advisor reviewers, we read about this a gave it a go and were not disappointed with the decision.

We drove around to Thong Tanote Beach at the bottom of the island. It is a small fishing village. Without any bookings, we found a boat that would take us over the Koh Taen snorkelling and then over to Koh Mat Sum. In all, the family of 4 of us had the boat with captain to ourselves for 5 hours, at only 1300 THB (about $40 USD).

The boat was a long tail boat and came with life jackets, bread to feed the fish and drinking water. It also had masks and snorkels, but we brought our own to use anyway. In addition, we had our own flippers. As per another review, the boats don't provide fins, so I would recommend taking some yourself.

The fish life was good on Koh Taen, but the water visibility was only about 10 feet as there was a little bit of a current. Possibly in a different phase of the tide it would be better?

The highlight of the day though Koh Mat Sum. We pulled up to a little private sandy bay and the whole place to ourselves. We had some food, chilled out, swam, snorkelled, etc... the water visibility there was exceptional!!!

TIP - Take some sun screen. We spent so much time in the warm water, we forgot how strong the sun can be and we all got a little bit sun burnt.

A really nice place to visit for the day and it is very cheap, about 1,200 thb for a private long tail boat, which takes upto 8 people.
Snorkel enroute to koh tan and then enjoy a couple of hours on the beach once on the island, very quiet an escape to a marooned tropical island for the day!

My family of four visit Koh Taen and Ko Mudtsum and hade great 1/2 day out. Snorkeling on great coral reef and great time on the beach. Also enjoy mountain and great resturant ion the main island. We used tourkohtean company that I would highly recommend.

OPther oporator use long tail boat with too many opeople (we where only 4 guest on a nice speed boat) maybe 30 or more and they walk on coral distroying it for all.

This is a conserved island where there isn't more than a little restauran, 6 bungalows and a little temple with a whaleshark skeleton... Island has nice stories and dogs can't come on the island because they'll turn mad and die for a very special reason. Definitely worth going! Trip is usually not more than 1500 THB

Exploring the neighboring islands of Koh Samui is a must. Not populated and great snorkeling sites. But our visit was made special by a company called Island Gem Picnic who provided a wonderful and impressive beach picnic. Excellent food and the availability of drinks is unbelievable. Wines, beers, softdrinks and many more! Highly recommended. Very friendly owner, Gavin.

Super beautiful island with great places for snorkeling. We even spotted rays and huge turtles here. The reef is very rich in fish.
