We had a lovely experience at Karen's Tribe Native Elephants. We felt as though the elephants were truly part of a family and we walked away having learned so much about their care. It's definitely not a light day...you get in there, from feeding them to bathing them, and exercising them. 100% worth it...one of the most memorable days of our trip.

I cannot explain to you how amazing, life changing this experience is. You have to go for yourself. Sleep over if you can and spend two days with these beautiful majestic animals. They are loved and cared for so tenderly, the tribes people have expert knowledge of Elephant care and have been caring for elephants for centuries. They are so friendly, the food is delicious, and the facilities are so professional. They speak english as well which is a bonus and love to laugh and joke around. Stunning views and you get to take home a CD of all the photos and memories. Buy some mementoes when you leave to support this cause and tribe as they are self sustainable and not funded by anyone. Thank you Sun, You and your family were absolutely wonderful. I will always remember this. In fact I'm coming back! With more people! Everyone deserves this experience!

I've traveled all over the world and never had such a great experience. The elephants are amazing and the personal interaction you are able to make with the elephants is something that you'll never forget. This opportunity alone is worth a trip to Chiang Mai. I am so thankful to have taken this tour!

We were looking for an elephant experience online and saw this one with NO negative comments. We were a bit hesitant at the beginning as this tour was much smaller compare to other elephant experience tours or parks. But it turned out to be the most memorable moment of our stay in Chiang Mai. Sun and his family and friends treats their elephants as part of family, not as a pet or money generating tools. The day that we booked only had 6 people altogether. We were lucky to be allocated to a mother and son elephants and it was the best experience ever. Sun was full of elephant knowledge and taught all of us a lot of things about elephants that we did not even know. Sun was very fluent in English so language was not a barrier, he was able to speak enough Chinese to get his message across too (although we don't really need translation). There weren't many Asians coming to this elephant camp, could be due to language or not able to book through any travel agents (as you could only book it directly via email or telephone). But if English is not a problem for you, I would highly recommend this elephant tour if anyone truly wants an unforgettable experience with elephants.

We have traveled all over the world and this was the best tour we have ever paid for hands down! Sun and his family are soo kind and really take care of you for the time your with them. We stayed over night and had so many activities planned it was hard to believe we were only there for 36 hours. It was all so enjoyable, the elephant part was awesome but every minute was filled with culture and education. I especially enjoyed meeting the elders of the tribe. The meals we had were unreal, starting with the lunch they serve after your day trip riding the elephants. I still dream about that meal... it was THE BEST! Staying here was really the best part of our whole trip in Thailand. There is something about the tribe that was so welcoming and warm. I would go back in a heartbeat. When we first looked at elephant tours were were a little cautious but the care and history of the Karen people was unreal. The elephants are part of the family not just tourism income. This was a real experience that i am not sure you would find anywhere else. Let the reviews here tell you this is one tour you will not want to miss & worth every penny.

Sun picked us up at our hotel and was very informative on the way. We had an incredible day with the elephants and a delicious lunch and Sun even took us into his home. Some of our family had gone last year and highly recommended it and we have done the same with other family who will be going next month.

We went on March 12 and had the time of our lives. What an amazing experience! From beginning to end it was just so well organized and executed with attention and love. From the scenic drive with a very responsible driver and comfortable car (only shared with one other couple) to the way these people opened their homes and their hearts to us. The elephants are so well cared for, it really shows. The mahouts communicate with their elephants just by talking or a soft pat, I have seen no sticks, no screaming, nothing of the like. Sun and his team are absolutely wonderful hosts and great, fun-loving human beings. We feel very humbled and grateful for having spent this day with them. The elephants are their brothers and sisters, a true part of their family. And it shows. For us, contributing directly to the tribe and community made us feel much more comfortable. Go do this! It’s a truly unique and unforgettable experience. You really get to get up close and personal with these majestic animals. You can ride or not ride your elephant-for-the-day for a few minutes. And mind you: that does not do them any harm if done the correct way - bareback riding on the neck. Other reviews have already explained it well: ‘no riding’ is no guarantee for care and kindness towards the elephants, especially when they are asked to go through their daily routines multiple times a day for multiple groups of tourists. The fact that these elephants only have one small group of visitors a day for a limited amount of time, plus at least one resting day a week, keeps them sane, healthy and happy, as far as I can tell.

My husband and I booked an overnight stay with Sun and the Karen Tribe Native Elephants last week. It was an incredible experience. We learned so much about the Karen Tribe and how they’ve cared for generations of elephants. Their main priority is to keep the elephants happy and healthy. I bonded with the pregnant Mea Mahree and my husband with the big papa himself, Puchan. After feeding, bathing, trekking and loving on our elephants we joined Sun and his family for the night. I learned how to weave like a traditional Karen tribeswoman (I’m terrible at it but my teachers were very patient!) My husband helped catch a chicken for dinner. They prepared the most amazing feast for us! Sun’s family is so lovely and welcoming and just all around great company. I wish we could spend more time with them. In the morning they brought our elephants up to the house to say goodbye, they were so cute when they saw us they came quickly trotting up ready for snacks and snuggles. We had an amazing and unforgettable experience. I can’t recommend them enough. We will definitely come back some day.

I initially wanted to do elephant nature park because as far as I knew, this was the most ethical park available. Unfortunately it was booked completely full a whole month in advanced. So I thoroughly searched through tripadvisor until I found the next best thing. I did initially have some reservations because of the whole riding elephants thing. However any reservations I had were immediately dissolved after our guide Sun taught us about his tribe and the elephants which have been in his tribe for many generations. In fact, every family has a role in caring for these elephants. Another thing that made me uneasy initially was the fact that they were breeding the elephants. With my American mentality and the whole supporting spaying and neutering, I felt like it seemed crazy to be breeding elephants when so many were being exploited. However we were informed that the reason being is that in the last 40 years, the domesticated elephant population has gone from 6000 to 4000. They aren't breeding them non-stop. They only have one baby right now and the only other elephant closest to it in age is currently 18 years old. In addition, these are domesticated elephants. They were initially used to plow the fields and as modes of transportation back in the day (such as water buffalo and horses). They explained to us that riding them bareback does not hurt them as they average about 700kg and the average person is less than 1% of their body weight. During interaction with the elephants, I found that personality-wise, they act much like domesticated dogs. Playful and curious- esp the baby.

We pre booked our day with the Karen Native Elephant Tribe 3 months prior to our visit via messenger with Sun.

Nothing prepared us for this truly amazing day.

Sun and the Karen Tribe love and care for their elephants which are part of their family.

When we arrive at the village, approx 2 hour drive from Chiang Mai, we were moved to tears to see the elephants happy and relaxed, standing by the river. The inquisitive baby came up to us to see if we had any food.

We were the only visitors the day we went, which was fantastic.

An elephant called Memory (that the nearest we could get to pronouncing her name) was in our charge for the day!

We were told how to approach her, how to command her, shown how to wash her using bark soap and getting in the river with her, how to make her daily herbal medicine and how to cut down banana trees for her to eat. One at a time we rode her bareback by sitting on her neck, which doesn’t harm her.

We were treated to a lovely lunch prepared by the ladies of the tribe.

I would 100% recommend anyone to choose to have their elephant experience with the Karen Native Elephant Tribe.

Thank you Sun and your village for allowing us to experience such an unforgettable day that will stay with us forever.
