We booked a full day trip through a shop and didn’t know anything about the operator. We wanted to go white water rafting and trekking. The tour was meant to include 1-2 hour trek which never happened and a visit to a butterfly place, which again never materialised. We visited an elephant experience, which was awful. Bull elephants trained to take food and then sit in the water to be ‘bathed’. It upset me to see majestic creatures ill treated for entertainment purposes. We also visited Elephant Nature Park another day and the experience was like night and day. Please, please visit ENP instead and learn all about them. The rafting was okay but short, we went to a Karen Long Neck place and encouraged to buy things - market stalls all selling the same stuff. Went to sticky falls too but not much time there. The guide made my daughter feel uncomfortable. The driver however was lovely. Wouldn’t recommend.

Did 2 nights and 3 days excluding the long necks in February during the dry season, chinese/thai new year and our guides name was Paan, we booked through our hotel at 1400B pp. Paan spoke decent english but the common language within the group of 12 people was german.
Firstly we were picked up all crammed in the back of a pick up truck, 10 people in the back and 2 people in the actual backseat of the truck. We first went to some markets for 20mins and walked around, while our tour guide bought all the food for the trip which was somewhat interesting. We then went to an orchid/butterfly farm museum which was actually boring unless you were some kind of flower/insect enthusiast. We then went to a stop near the elephant park and had a few stalls nearby and had some lunch which was fried rice in banana leaves. We then continued to go to the elephant park and 7 of us decided not to ride the elephants because we had no desire to and some elephants were chained and we did not want to support any mistreatment towards these majestic creatures. We did however walk with the elephants while the others rode them and we managed to feed the elephants sugar cane and bananas (25B/bag). I think everyone would have preffered to go to a elephant sanctuary park however after some research, no trekking tours do this.
After that we started to begin our hike around 1-1.30pm. At first we started to hike a long steep and dry dirt track for an hour, then moved onto a narrow track for a further 1.5 hours. It was an effort, but a very good excuse to have a few extra beers n whiskey in the hill tribe village. The village is not exactly tribal in anyway. It really is just a small rural village on top of a hill which is not cut off from society in anyway as they had a road where bikes with supplies and people would go down every 15 minutes. There are shops which sell alcohol, snacks, ciggarettes, firecrackers and water. I'm not sure if it was just for the new year celebration or the norm, but the small village kids were letting off fire crackers all afternoon and night. Dinner was decent, we have a soup and fried rice, the food throughout the whole trip is somewhat bland, but have to add chilli to everything ourselves, but then again, its the same food that the locals were eating. At this point, a few poeple decided that they wanted to stay for an extra night and they were able to for an extra 200B. Later that night I cannot remember too much because more beers and whiskey came out. But I do recall a small fire and a guitar being played which made it a very social night.
In the morning, we had a simple breakfast, toast n jam with some fried rice. Then left the village at 10.30am, the walk was mostly downhill, and much easier, we came across a small village and a small break then continued to our first waterfall and had lunch which was noodles and had a quick swim where the water was cold and refreshing. After some more walking, and more waterfalls we end up at our 2nd hut for the 2nd night, it was no village, just a small family that looked after the place. It was much more relaxing, it had a small fireplace, a squat toilet, a bucket to wash, some mattreses with mosquito nets and a large family of dogs. We had another simple dinner, played some cards and having some laughs.... and at this point we thought everything was alright! All of a sudden we hear loud shouting from the thai lady that runs the place, we run over and one of the huts is on fire!!! Very dramatic and surreal, everyone helps put the fire out with the shower/toilet buckets available and the huts roof is half burnt because Paan our tour guide knocked a candle over, it was a very exhilarating moment, but I'm sure this was not apart of the normal tour experience...
In the morning we continued to walk where we had some dogs follow us again, and then after an hour or so, we came across the white water rafting on the mae tang river. I must remind you, this is still in the dry season being February, but i would rather call this stone rafting. This was not fun at all, just paddling until we got to some rocks and then had to jump to get the raft over the rocks. I feel there should be some kind of alternative througout the dry season. The bamboo rafting was fine though, kind of relaxing. After the rafting we ended up in the same place we had lunch the first day. We then had to wait 2 hours for the truck and then we were all dropped off where we were picked up from. With the friends we made on the tour we all had dinner and drinks in Chiang Mai.
To conclude, It was a bit touristy from beginning to end with with the orchid farm and white water rafting. I would reccomend this trip to friends and family, but the experience still could have been better if there were alternatives to the "white water rafting" and if it was an elephant sanctuary and not elephant riding park. But it was definitely an experience to remember while making friends along the way.

Booked on to a 2000bhat day tour: Elephant Trek, zip line, white water rafting and bamboo raft.
It was a lot Cheaper than all other similar tours, so didn't expect the best quality. Elephants seemed sad and not very well treated (but I have no knowledge of elephant care so don't quote me on it).
6 of us on the day tour. Only had two elephants available so tried to get us to sit 3 to an elephant, with 2 on the saddle and 1 on the neck; we refused so waited an hour for an extra elephant. The elephant tour took about 20 minutes and was not very scenic.
4 zip lines, some very long (600m) and the staff were very professional and funny! Seemed safe enough!
White water rafting was average; a nice boat trip down the river but no excitement so if you are after any adrenaline don't expect to be pulsing here!
Bamboo rafting was ok - relaxed across the river for a few minutes.
All in all a good day; if you are looking for a good day out for a cheap price I would recommend, however if you have more cash to splash I imagine the more expensive tours will give you better experiences!
Oh and the driver was crazy! Terribly fast and dangerous - but maybe that's part of the excitement!

Tour exceeded expectations!!!
We had absolutely amazing tour guide Chai who went above & beyond!
We had 6 people in addition to the tour guide.
Tour started with the elephants visit - it was unreal experience not only feeding them but guiding the elephants to the river while feeding bananas & walking next to them and then bathing them in the river.. (if you want to see a massive elephant farm, then i suggest going somewhere else), we had two super lovely elephants who were hugging you and doing funny tricks.
Tour continued with the water rafting. We were lucky to have super funny raft guide. Bonus that they are taking professional photos during the ride which you can purchase (optional) for $100 baht.
We ended up soaked (thanks to the tour guide and other people 😄 so spare clothes are must have)
After the rafting went to see the long neck tribe which is optional to join. Otherwise you can just relax and have some drinks while other people are checking the scenery.
Tour ended with the waterfall which was very cool experience also. Chai took very cool photos again so was definitely worth the go!
Definitely take spare cash with you if you want to buy souvenirs, the rafting photo , drinks during the trip or tip the guides.
Thanks again to Chai! Extremely happy we chose this tour provider.

This was a nightmare. One of the elephant handlers was stabbing the elephants so hard that one started yelping and crying while we were bathing it. They were using a wooden stick that had a sharp nail on the end of it. I ended up in tears and couldn’t believe what I was apart of. I saw no love for these creatures by any of the handlers. Even the young boy who was probably 12 years old was whipping the elephant. Also: one of the handlers was harassing all of the women while they were alone for extra trip money. This was a terrible elephant experience. We passed other elephant tours that were not using excessive force or hitting the elephants with any sort of stick or hook. I have added a picture of the handler who was abusing the elephant until it cried in pain and who was harassing single female travellers for money.

I booked this online through Chiang Mai Travel Hub. I wasn’t aware that it was done through Earth Eco tours. Everyone was picked up, and we stopped at the butterfly/orchid farm first. It was nice, I didn’t even know it was on the agenda. Not too impressive, but nice. Then we went to the elephants. Wow. Horrendous. The elephants are treated horribly. They are screamed at and hit. I was a solo traveler, so they put a couple on the seat and me on the neck bareback. It was really uncomfortable because of how inhumane it was. I really wish I hadn’t gotten on the elephant. The whitewater rafting was ok, nothing special. The guide was not good. Same with the bamboo rafting. The hike was cool, and so was the waterfall at the top, but again the guide was not good. It was rushed; we were even told to hurry up. I really do not recommend this to anyone. Should be shut down. I don’t understand what is eco about this tour either? Maybe because lunch came in a banana leaf..

I was very excited about the elephants, we looked for good places that would take care of the them, nothing with tricks or anything, just spend the day learning about these animals... unfortunately we look for advice in some agency tour close to the hostel and they said this was a good place where they treat very well the elephants, bla, bla, bla...
We believed it and book the tour, we were picked up at the hostel and took a small tour to the elephant poo park which was an interesting visit, probably one of the highlights of the tour.
After, we were taken to the farm, we arrived and saw a small elephant with a really small chain on his feet and he barely could move.... however we waited for other elephants to come to start with the training.
They told us they don't use chairs on the elephants to protect them but SURPRISE!!!! we saw our elephants doing another trek with the chairs. The staff just took them off and then they brought the elephant to our group as if we were blind or something. Really disappointing
After, we feed the elephants and learnt some words to control them, the mahouts made the elephants do some tricks and off course that includes hitting them with a metal thing (I don't remember the name). Then you take a small ride on the elephant and after that, you have free time (I think the don't have anything planned so they just said it's free time) so you can feed the elephants and spend time with them, it is the best part of the day. Those animals are amazing and will always look for more and more food, even in your pockets...
During the free time the elephants are chained and you can see them bouncing, which is a sign of depression... they look really sad and tired. I was feeling awful for paying something that will just benefit some people and no the animals.
The lunch is fine, some local food but nice prepared. Then you are taken to the river and you get to ride the elephant for an hour or so.... I felt really happy to be so close to the elephant, I had many bananas in my pocket and was feeding the elephant during the whole trek. However I had the mahout close to me guiding the elephant, and he was hitting the elephant like every 15 seconds.
I got annoyed and ask him to stop, also I didn't understand why he was hitting my elephant if everything was fine... he moved away from me with an angry face and maybe cursing me in thai but who cares I made him stop hitting my elephant!!!!
The trek ends in the river and they provided us with a bucket and a brush. The elephant are happy because they love water and can cool down... but even during the bathing time you can feel the animals are not well and something is wrong with the whole thing.
In relation with the staff, well, they don't know anything about elephants, they will tell you some differences between africans and asian elephants and the amount of food they required every day.... then your learn nothing about the elephants.
Very bad experience, I wish I hadn't done it.... next time I will look by myself and won't trust in tour agencies.

We booked a tour via travel hub which we paid for upfront. The reviews for travel hub were great so we were very disappointed when the invoice said that the tour was actually operated via Earth Eco. THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY NOT MADE CLEAR VIA THE TRAVEL HUB WEBSITE.
After reading the reviews of Earth Eco (which said how horribly the elephants were treated, how much waiting around their was and how little English (and how untrained) the guides were) we decided that there was absolutely no way would proceed with the tour.
Our guesthouse hosts contacted travel hub for us and tried to get our money back for us but they completely refused.
The website is an absolute joke and I am surprised that they provide tours with such unrepeatable providers such as Earth Eco via their website.

Although we have visited Thailand several times, but This is our first time in Chiang Mai. We had been looking for a tour - at least a day tour to explore the areas outside the main city. There are plenty of tour groups on offer with different reviews and price ranges. It was rather confusing. Our taxi driver who drove us from the airport quoted THB1500 for day to go to all the places we would like to go - waterfall, elephant sanctuary or rides, white water rafting plus or minus Karen tribe. But we have to organise the entrance fees etc. a friend from Thailand also managed to find a local university student who will organise a tour with car/driver etc for a slightly higher price. At the end we stumbled upon this local tour guide shop not far from the Thapae gate while walking looking for a place to eat. The lady who runs the shop, Nui was extremely helpful. She gave us brochures etc and quoted prices for different packages etc; and advised us to discuss and come back tomorrow.
We opted for the package 1 - which consists of Orchid Farm and Butterfly Farm, Karen/Long Neck Village Tour (optional - 300thb extra), elephant ride, waterfall visit, white water rafting and bamboo rafting with lunch included (vegetarian option available). For 1200thb per person.
We were picked up by the hotel at 8.15am, to join 7 others, in open-sided outdoor truck(?) - the same one they used as "red taxi" around CM. We were a bit apprehensive as it was not air-conditioned etc etc for comfort, but it turned out to be so much fun and we made new friends from all over the world!
Our guide - Chai-Tee, was amazing, with excellent command of English, great sense of humour and energetic to say the least! A very likeable character almost instantly!
With regard to the tour - it is what it is. I can see few comments with regard to animal cruelty etc - which I don't agree. They showed us how tourism has helped them to form a group to work together and earn a living. Small cottage industries trickle down from the tour. Always easier to judge from tinted western lenses. While we were having our lunch, the people who work there cared for the elephants, feed them and provide them with water to play. Elephants are not a pet.
The waterfall was cold but refreshing! Nice dip after an hour long trekking. The white water rafting was so much fun! The safety "talk" given by a female thai instructor was hilarious - I wish I recorded it for you tube. The tour organiser does not control the weather and the river water level - it is a dry season now in March, so water level is a bit low. Again, it is what it is - can't really blame them for the weather. We enjoyed both the tubing and bamboo rafting along the river.
Toilet is available at each "stop station" with cold refreshment on sale. Leave your wallet and other valuables at the hotel. 1000thb is more than enough for two to buy drinks/waters and photos of you nicely framed (from the white water raft), plus tips to the tour guide. All in all - highly recommended and very good value!

Booked through TRAVEL HUB which had good reviews but they arrange trips for EARTH ECO TOURS company so be careful about this, we had no idea our trip would be through this company. Elephant riding was one of the worst experiences of my life. It made me cry how the elephants were treated. They were in a bad condition, looked beaten, had scars on their heads and wore chains. The elephant drivers were shouting on them all the time, had hooks which they used a lot while we were riding them and were around them. It just felt completely wrong. It was supposed to take 1 hour but took only 20 minutes. Also rafting was supposed to be for 1 hour and bamboo rafting 15 minutes and after all rafting took max. 30 minutes and bamboo rafting only 5. The only nice thing I can say is that our guide was very nice and friendly and the stay in a hill tribe village was awesome but after the experience with the elehants I can't recommend you this company. If you decide for this company try to book something without the elephant riding.
