The hill tribe trek from Chiang Mai was a really good varied experience, not too long and not too short. We were accompanied by a guide and cook/ helper. The food was fantastic. The trek was part walking, then elephant ride and some river rafting. It was great to see the local villagers on the way and see that they are still very traditional.

Overall an excellent cultural experience which I would recommend.

I booked a day trip with Jungala Nature Treks while staying in Chiang Mai and it was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. Even though I paid for a group tour, there was only one other (very lovely) lady so we essentially had a private tour with our guide, B. We were able to trek at our own pace, stopping often to listen to B point out elephants on the hillside, bison roaming wild, rice and crop fields, and plants. We passed through Karen tribes and he told us about the culture. After about 2.5 hours trek, we stopped at a Karen household where B let us help him cook lunch. What a feast! After a nice break, we hiked another hour to a gorgeous waterfall where we could swim and play! We also passed through a passion fruit farm and ate tamarind from a tree! Then back down through the farms and roaming bison to the truck waiting to bring us back to our hotel. The trek was a nice workout but not too difficult. And B was great about letting us go at our own pace.
I would definitely say this had all the elements of a perfect day. Beautiful nature, exercise, delicious food, animals (the roaming dogs and kitties are wonderful!) and a warm, funny, charming guide who made us feel safe and cared for. Totally recommended!
Tips: The meal is included but you'll need to buy drinks. Super cheap anyway. And our guide had extra water when I ran out half way up ( I drink a LOT of water). Definitely wear sneaks or hiking shoes and bring your sunblock and bugspray. Also, gratuity is never even hinted at but I gave a nice tip as an expression of appreciation for such outstanding service. You can tell B loves his job, his countryside and his people and he is very invested in making sure you have a great time.

I did the "JTW 1: Mae Wang - Doi Inthanon area - 1 Day" tour:
The tourguide actually grew up in a small Karen village. That's why he knew a lot of things about Karen lifestyle and could explain plants and animals in the jungle very well. He showed us a tarantulas hole, big bugs, two nice waterfalls and many rice fields of the Karen people. Also a nice lunch at a typical Karen house was included,
A very nice experience.

The trek was great. The guide was great and he took the time to answer any questions.
Your meal is prepared by a tribe family, but you do not get to see them make it, or you do not interact with them. In fact they prepare a separate meal for themselves. You only interact with the tribe members in passing and when being offered to purchase items. It would have been nice to have slightly more interaction with the family that you lodge with. You will eat separately from the family... Our guide also ate separately from us. Thankfully everyone in our group got along well but I could imagine it being very isolating for other travellers if there is a language barrier.
You will be forced to purchase water throughout the trip. Include an additional $20 just for water in your budget.
The only other thing was the driver who took us to and from the site of the trek and back to the guesthouse drove dangerously through the mountains and it made everyone quite nervous. He passed cars and bikes and busses around blind corners at high speeds. Any contact with another vehicle would have sent all 8 passengers out of the open truck. It wasn't funny at the time...

Thank you for your review. We're grateful you took the time to explain your experience so honestly. However, are we concerned about your description of transportation. We will follow up on it to ensure further treks will have safe drivers. We will also try to improve/facilitate interactions between visitors and locals with the guide as translator.

The tour itself is great- off the beaten path and beautiful. Unfortunately Dong, our guide seamed a little careless/aloof. We went the morning after a rain storm so everything was extremely slippery. He didn't seem to wait for us- I slipped during the downhill and he didn't ask me if I was okay after. He also didn't explain anything and seemed to be on his own agenda a fair amount of the day.

Prior to our trip, we contacted Ms. Isabell from Jungala Nature Trek. She is a very patience & helpful lady. She explained in great details about their trekking package as well as culture & weather in Chiang Mai. She also customized the itinerary to cater for 2xsmall kids.
We booked a 1-day trip to Doi Inthanon National Park. With the help of Jungala's guide, we were able to reach the peak via the trail. The view is simply stunning. Trekking along the paths near the peak is really an eye-opening experience for us. We also visited the Temples near the peak of the mountain & a waterfall in the National park.
We also booked a 1-day trip to Mae Wang area. We trekked through forest, along rivers, through small villages, rivers [via bamboo/wooden bridge], rice fields etc. The Jungala's guide cooked the lunch for us in a hut beside the river. It’s really a unique dining experience
Jungala guides are knowledgeable, friendly, kind & helpful. They are well versed in English & there is no communication barrier at all.
Would like to thank Jungala for a memorable Chiang Mai trip.

i had sent many emails to different trekking company, Isabel, i think its the owner's wife, she explained me very well in email so i decided to join them. She was nice to propose a meeting before the trekking trip. We fixed to meet up at my hotel 9:30. Its my first day to arrive chiang mai, honestly i prefer to have more sleep, but anyway, its a nice gesture so i accepted. My husband and i woke up early to dress up to wait for her husband, i think its owner, We had been waiting for an hour, i think there is something wrong, and i tried to fix my phone card to call them. The owner's explanation is too busy in his hostel, he works alone today so he cant come to my hotel. I think he is really irresponsible, If he cant come, he should have send me an email or phone my hotel,. How can he let a client waiting for an hour? How about if i don't call him, how long i have to wait him, He really ruin my day, especially its my anniversary holiday, Ok! i got him over the phone, he required us to come to his office, its in down town, We had lunch in downtown and search his place by GPS. As we are not local people, we kinda get confuse and feel lost, I called him again, he kept giving instructions, he said we are not so far from him, just few min walking distance, but we really can find his office. I called him 3 times, i asked him to come to pick up because he said he knows where i am, he didn't really want until i get very very angry, He sent a guy to pick us. Actually, there is not much thing to discuss, its a one day trekking, we gave them our name and discuss 15 mins and PAID them, I am sure we hadnt stayed more than 15 mins there. I think this meeting is useless, maybe they just wanted us to settle the bill. Yes! He said sorry but i dont really feel he is sincere. I know they might be busy but my time is treasure too. Its very bad to make me waiting him in the morning for an hour, and only i yelled on phone, he sent someone to pick us, My husband and i even wanted to give up the trip and just waste the deposit.
About the trip, our guide "B" is very nice, cooked us a nice food and he took care of me very well, without him, i couldnt finish the trekking, i like him very much!

Thank you for your review Alicia. We apologize that Doh forgot about the meeting. It was the first time. However, we always ask guests for the convenience of a meeting. In fact it was very good to meet. You booked a intensive trek, but Doh realized that the easy trek would suit you better. If people from different countries and with different mother tongues communicate, it can happen that there come up some misunderstandings due to language difficulties. During the meeting I asked you for your well being, but unfortunately did you not want to let me know. I do belief it is always better to speak about difficulties in person too. Kind regards, Isabell & Doh

A few weeks ago, my family and I went on a one-day trip to the jungle near Chiang Mai.
Doh our guide was an enthousiastic, funny and really positive person that made our day perfect. The hike was through the beautiful nature, a Karen-tribe village and the beautiful rice fields. At the tripe, he cooked for the five of us ( a family with children of 15 18 and 19) and honestly, it was the best meal that I ate in my whole holiday. In the afternoon we swam under a waterfall. To summarize, we had an amazing day,

My partner and I completed the 3 day/2 night trek with the awesome "Bee" as our guide and we had a ball... It should be called the "Three Waterfalls" trek, as each day during the hottest period we stopped for a rest at some jungle oasis and a cold beer (or two). Evenings we stayed with the Karen (?) people in some traditional accommodation and were treated by some amazing Thai food cooked once again by super-guide Bee... Was great to get out of Chiang Mai and see some of the real Thailand. We bumped into other trekkers on the first day, then it was just the 4 of us... Not for the unfit however : )
