Did the morning tour. Don't have breakfast beforehand ! This great walking experience allowed us to sample a wide range of dishes in a variety of local venues. All with an element of history and explanation thrown in. Our guide was excellent and the whole experience is highly recommended.

My sister and I, both foodies, went for this tour in March, We weren't dissapointed Rain, our guide, took us through back alleys and main roads and gave us a fantastic taste of Chiang Mai. The quantity of food was excellent -well more than what we could eat. The best part - we saw all the temples as well.

This tour was a lot of fun, and it's good value for the money. There was so much food! Our guide, Rain, was really knowledgeable and friendly, and she went out of her way to accommodate our group. I definitely recommend this tour; it's a great way to experience Chiang Mai and taste a lot of local food!

I was nervous as this was the first food tour I had been on and reading some reviews I wasn't sure what to expect. All I can say is that it was lovely from start to finish. We ate loads and were educated about the history of Chiang Mai along the way. Would highly recommend as it was both informative and tasty! We found our bearings so much quicker after the tour and knew what to order and experience elsewhere. Our tour guide was brill and answered all our questions. She was telling us all about the ingredients and how the food is normally eaten and served. Great Wee morning out! Thanks again.

Chiang Mai Food Tour doesn't meet my expectation and I wouldn't recommend it to foodies. Here are my reasons:
1. For this type of food tour, I always expect to eat food at local shops where we as tourists wouldn't be able to find. We stopped at 5-6 places and only the Thai sausage places matched my expectation. Most other stops were just one of the food stalls in the open market, which everyone can find and the food were not particularly tasty. What disappointed the most is the lunch stop. Rain brought us to Huen Phen, which is one of the most popular restaurants in the old city and full of tourists. Why would I pay the premium and eat at a place which is already on my list. The last stop is Thai desert and lemongrass tea at Makka Hotel. it's nice experience, but again something we as a tourist can go easily.
2. Rain tried to combine sightseeing with food tour, which I think is not necessarily a good idea. We ended up not getting too much out of the sightseeing part. I'd rather spend more time in those temples but we had to follow the group
3. Too many people: we had 15 people in our group on that day which is historical high record. Rain had a hard time keeping the group together and we have to separate into two cars in transit and spend lots of time waiting. I didn't get much out Rain's explanation to the sights nor the food. Maybe it's not Rain's fault and the company should have limited the size of the group.
To summary, I wouldn't recommend this tour. Chiang Mai is overall very tourist friendly and you can find many local food stables in the night markets and open markets by yourself and you probably don't need to join any food tour.

Chiang Mai Food Tours states on their website that the maximum group size is 10 people so I was very disappointed that our tour had 15 people on it. I was really looking forward to this but the group was just too big for the experience to be enjoyable in any way.
We couldn't hear the guide so we didn't learn about the food, we didn't have time to ask questions, we couldn't all fit in the transportation so spent a lot of time waiting around for the whole group to arrive, and we couldn't even all sit down at the various restaurants we went to. While Rain worked very hard, and did her best trying to accommodate everyone in the group it was just impossible to learn about the food and there is no way I would have ever booked the tour if I had known there would be 15 people on it.
You do get to go to some interesting places and perhaps it would have been worth it in a smaller group but the tour is expensive for the experience. When I asked why it was such a big group Rain said there were a lot of bookings. When I followed up with the company directly they told me that a group had flown half way around the world and had to change their booking - I understand they don't want to disappoint people who have booked but I don't understand why they didn't hold two tours that day, or if we had been informed I would have happily swapped our tour to another day, or indeed cancelled it altogether.

We had a great time on the morning tour with Rain – tried many dishes and restaurants that we wouldn’t have otherwise (i.e. Kanom Krok, or coconut pudding, at the street market – delicious! And the spicy but wonderful Thai sausage). She had a focused itinerary and kept the tour moving at a good pace, answering our questions and providing interesting information as we moved around the city (including about things other than food). We were practically stuffed at the end.

Wow, what an incredible introduction to Chiang Mai! I take way too many food tours around the world and have been blessed to have really good experiences throughout. I actually took a Bangkok tour with their sister company (see my separate review for it), which led me to book with them. This one in Chiang Mai, however, remains very close to my heart. It was as if a long lost auntie of mine showed me around town and introduced me to the culture of my ancestors. I felt like family. "Taste of the North and Old Town Chiang Mai Walk" was beautiful - and delicious!
Our guide, Rain, was incredibly knowledgeable not only about the ingredients and history of each dish, but also about the city and its hidden gems. She took us to landmark temples, in addition to a couple of others hidden among alleyways. Most of the food spots she took us to I would never be able to find on my own. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I must reemphasize it.
Highlights? I had the best Khao Soi of my life (and, according to sweet Rain, the closest to the authentic recipe -- as of, my lame tourist tongue could never take the spiciness of the REAL thing!). Also, after walking in the heat, it was incredible ending up in the oasis our last stop was.
Aww, take me back now! I miss you Rain!

We had a great time on our food tour! Our guide (Rain) took us to places we never would have tried on our own. We went to little hole-in-the-wall restaurants where people didn't speak English & the signs/menu weren't in English. We tried food that was unlike any Thai food we've had in the U.S. Rain also showed us how to take a red cab, which was a huge benefit for the rest of our trip. She also helped us book a hotel in the old city for the last night of our trip and answered my endless string of questions about Thai culture. She went above and beyond, and it was a great experience! My only advice is to have some Pepto/Immodium on hand for after the tour. Our stomachs weren't used to that kind of food. It was still worth it though. :-)

We had a great time on this food tour. We got to walk around and go to places we normally would not have. We had fantastic food at every location and we got to learn about the food and culture. Our guide Rain was very helpful and pleasant. English is spoken well. If you want to dig a little into the Thai culture the you need to do this food tour.

Im a huge fan of food and so excited to read your review on the food tour in Chiang Mai. Just wonder if there are non-spicy dishes included in the tour as I travel with my 5-year-old gỉl and she need sth not spicy to eat. And how much do I have to pay for the tour? Thank you so much

The food we had was pretty spicy. Unless your kid is a really adventurous eater, I'm not sure how much she would like. It doesn't strike me as something that would be good for younger kids, but you never know. Rain is great and she can probably adjust the tour. When we went, it was just me husband, me, and Rain.
