It's a family owned Thai cooking school right at the heart of the old city, very accessible. If you are with family or friends, it's one of those places where you get to experience the culture and real stories of Thai. We had a great time, it was a personalized tour of the local market, the ingredients, the cooking style, and we learnt how to make home cooked Thai food. The lady of the house (Boom) is very welcoming, patient and friendly. She shared tips and tricks during the cooking session, and also the story of the establishment. I recommend a must visit!!!

This was THE best 4 hours spent with amazingly knowledgable friendly teachers. Super clean, and professional kitchen with beautiful food made by ME. Go there hungry. You need to! Fabulous fantastic evening. Thank you

Cooking School review...
On December 30, 2005, our family of 4 had a wonderful day of cooking classes with Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School. It was recommended in a couple of travel books and we thoroughly examined their website before booking the class on-line. It was a fun-filled informative day at the Wok Restaurant. The 3 instructors spoke English well and were humorous with their explanations. Our vegetable carving and four course meal all tasted better than we expected-- thanks to the helpful instructors. Our 14 year son was able to keep up and enjoyed himself more than he wanted to admit.
The format was great: classroom instruction/demonstration, followed by each student going to their personal cooking station, the instructor repeating preparation and cooking instructions while students prepared their food. From soup to spring rolls to curry to sticky rice-- somehow we cooked delicious food. Ingredients were all very fresh and the facilities extremely clean.
An added bonus that we didn't expect-- they picked us up from our hotel (River View Lodge--awesome place) and returned us at the end of the course at no charge!
Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School offers different courses each day. One gentleman in our class was attending all of them, plus advanced cooking instruction afterwards.
Our family gives two thumbs up to this cooking school!

Me and my friend did our course with Baan Thai cookery school. We had Boom as our teacher who has excellent English and a great sense of humour.
The class we had was small with just 6 of us in it (3 men, 3 women) and it was a perfect size. The school is open, airy and well set out.
First we went to the market to get the fresh produce and Boom told us about the different products. Then we went back to the school and we prepared and cooked, it wasn't like a school as it was so easy going with lots of laughter. We made I think 6 different dishes so we ate all day long too! We would cook the food and by the time we'd eaten it, the kitchen was spotless again and the next dish ready to go, you didn't hear or see anyone cleaning or preparing.
I would recommend this course, not only for the cooking but for the friendly nature of the staff who instantly make you feel relaxed and welcome.

We had Apple teach us the different local Thai spices and cuisines and she made it a fun and enjoyable experience, great English too in case anyone is worried.
We chose the day class and although it can seem like a very long day, it actually went by pretty fast! Spend the morning at the local market gathering fresh ingredients and spent the rest of th day cooking and eating with short breaks in between, but be warned, there will be a lot of food, we were so full after the 3rd course, of the 5...

My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time at the cooking school for our half-day visit. We started off in the morning with a brief market tour where we were taught about local ingredients and their uses in Thai food.
Onto the kitchen, the staff were really fun and friendly - especially the Spring Roll King who was hilarious! They’re flexible with dishes too, if you’re not a fan of fish sauce they will substitute with soy etc. The dining room is separate from the kitchen and is air-conditioned and has free water, tea and coffee - definitely an added bonus.
Could only be improved by a takeaway box! (They have plastic bags however that’s not useful for the soup and main dishes).
I would definitely recommend this activity - come hungry!

Nok our instructor was lovely, the food was amazing but the whole experience was ruined for myself and two teenage children because £150 was stolen from a 'secret compartment' in my money belt which was inside a backpack in locker no. 6. We were told by Nok and the team that the lockers were completely secure and while we went to a local market (about 30 mins) the money was taken by very dishonest staff. I have reprted this to the Baan Thai Cookery School to no avail. This is the email I received back (not signed) from a manager "I wasn't at school on that day. So I don't what happened until I saw your email today. I think I keep the keys in the safe place that anyone could access. ( actually, we don't have master of all the lockers, some of them were taken by our clients who forgot to return the keys when they finished the class)"

This place exceeded all expectations that we had. The employees were SO awesome... fun.. and enjoyable to be around. I'm sure they do the same routine over and over, but they seemed to really be passionate about the process. The food was immaculate. Took an awesome trip to the market to pick up all the ingredients FRESH before cooking.
Incredible location too. !! :)

Thailand is chock full of Thai cooking schools. It can be hard for the traveler with limited time and too many things to focus on to figure out which school will meet one’s expectations.
This school has a high rating. That’s why we chose it.
Rather than report on the instructional coverage and technique others cite here, I’ll focus here on what you’ll learn categorically.
Orientation
First, you’ll learn in a group setting. Groups range from 4 -12 depending on how many people sign up on a given day. Some clients sign up for a ½ day of instruction. Others for a full day. The school offers a short night time course for those unable to attend during the day. They’ll ask you to fill out a form where you specify what types of dishes you want to learn how to repair, by category. This will drive which group you are put into later during the food preparation and cooking stage.
Shopping
Second, after introductions, you’ll embark on a walking tour of a local market. Your instructor will show you which vegetables and spices to select and explain the variations between species. Thai history and cultural methods are woven in to all aspects of instruction throughout the day.
Cooking
Third, on return to the school, your instructor will review which ingredients go into which dishes. You look at and handle samples of all associated with the cooking. Then you’ll be broken up into groups. You’ll be placed with the group of folks cooking the same dish you specified.
Sometimes, instruction will involve you preparing (washing, cutting up) veggies and other foods for cooking. Sometimes the food will already be prepared for you to speed up instruction. You’ll experience both processes.
Eating
You’ll eat with your group at the end of each cooking session. And you’ll share foods. It’s great fun!
At the end of the day, you’ll walk away with a plastic bag full of the entrees you couldn’t finish at the school. Don’t plan on going out for dinner on the day you’re learning at this school --- you’ll be too full to do so.
Transportation --- Getting to the school
You can’t park at this place. It’s on a narrow side street. A motorbike or bicycle is the only way to get there if you’re not walking. The school will send their Tuk-Tuk to fetch you at your hotel and return you at the close of instruction.
You’ll walk away from this course with a very clear, clean, well-laid out 44-page cooking pamphlet with pictures. You’ll have no trouble putting your new cooking skills to good use following this booklet.

Note:
While we thought this was an excellent cooking instructional experience, please take a look at my review for the Tamnak Lao Cooking school course in Luang Prabang, Laos. The instructors in that school brought 12 years of experience teaching that course to clients, respectively. The professionalism, level of detail and personable instruction surpassed the Baan Thai school. Plus, Lao food is not as sweet as Thai food --- a plus from our perspective. The instructors at this school spoke English better than the instructor at the Baan Thai school.
The Baan Thai course featured a new instructor with about two days experience at the school. Clearly, she didn’t know a lot about the school. We jumped from instructor to instructor depending on which dish we were cooking. This didn’t diminish the instruction.
We found the consistency and level of professionalism higher at the Tamnak Lao school.

This school is NOT appropriate for newcomers or people with a bad memory. I do cook food at home in Germany a lot, also Thai food from books. But the way it was "taught" was awful. The teacher first cooked the entire dish, telling a long list of steps to be done in a rush. Then we were told to repeat all, without having the option to read the recipe. It was extremely stressful - 5 dishes to be cooked and eaten within 2 hours! It was obvious that most of the customers there knew the recipes beforehand. It obviously didn't work for the few newcomers there.

I have emailed this cooking school to make a reservation and I haven't heard back anything. That was 4 days ago. Any suggestions on how to reserve? I tried calling the phone number and can't get it to go through.
Written February 14, 2018
We did our reservation through the hotel 1 day ni advance. Probably that’s the best way to do it and the easiest once you arrive to Chiang Mai
Written February 15, 2018
When making a reservation, do you have to pay at time of booking it when you get to the class?

Is it best to book Thai cookery school out there or before I get to Thailand?
Written November 14, 2015
We booked before we got there and we're about to again. More for my peace of mind. Had such a good time last time want to go back. There are many cooking schools it shouldn't be a problem leaving it until you get there.

Written August 7, 2015
The market tour took about half an hour take money for a cool drink needed after the walk through the streets. Interesting walk and tour we did the full day and got to make yummy deserts too. You'll have a fun day that goes really quickly

My class started around 9:30. We first shopped. Then we learned to cook four different dishes. We ate each before starting the next. All four were cooked and consumed by noon. We cooked and ate all morning. I left stuffed and very pleased.
