About
Wattana Art Gallery, Chiang Mai, Thailand Where can I see contemporary art in Chiang Mai? Tourists and art lovers are left asking this question after they have seen all the Wats and visited the craft villages. Tucked away on Soi Wat Umong in the hills behind Chiang Mai University, Wattana Art Gallery is a stunning building that houses perhaps the finest art gallery in Chiang Mai. It has three floors full of original paintings in oil, acrylic and mixed media, ranging from smaller works to larger size murals. Wattana Wattanapun has lived and worked in the United States and Canada. He has held visiting professorship positions in numerous prestigious institutions, including Haverford College, Oberlin College, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Simon Fraser University. Presently, he is an academic consultant to the Fine Arts Faculty, Chiang Mai University.Wattana’s art work incorporates traditional Thai motifs in a contemporary perspective. The work expresses social commentary on the changing and corrupted cultural environment and makes us question the nature of beauty.Come visit Wattana Art Gallery and enjoy organic coffee, exotic snacks and available WiFi in the Coffee Corner while you experience this unique gallery designed as an art sanctuary -- a quiet place for contemplation about beauty and aesthetics, where art is inseparable from life.

Diverse and exquisite

This private gallery is stunning. The building is beautiful and the art diverse and exquisite. The artist lives next door and was in the gallery when I visited. He is friendly and well-travelled. I ended up being invited to an opening. A visit here would be easy to combine with a visit to Wat Umong which is quite unique as well.

Fabulous place to visit, beautiful artwork set in a lovely gallery. What made it so special was meeting the artist himself and he showed us around. I would definitely recommend a visit here and book ahead so you can meet this amazing artist Wattana Wattanapun too!😊😎

Weaving Thai and modern art together
Aug 2019 • Couples
Having had my girl portrait painted approx. 45 years ago(!) by Wattana, I of course had to visit his art gallery in Chiang Mai.
I especially love his paintings of elaborately woven cloth, each brush stroke of gold or black or red placed exactingly, giving you the illusion of hand woven fabric, and then... suddenly it’s a painting again.
Or the Thai temple with swirling vivid clouds as if the old Thai myths have just come to life.

The place NOT to be !
Jan 2019 • Solo
Lost in a roadside alley, this house is not worth the detour. The dogs announce your arrival in this deserted place and a guardian opens you door. Everything is abandoned. The entrance is 50 baht for Thai and 100 baht for foreigners. What a beautiful discrimination !
This megalomaniac boutique of the artist who self-exposes does not breathe altruism.
The art of this deception speaks for itself.
A word !

Amazing Art Gallery!
Dec 2018 • Solo
You have to check out this gallery. Some of the pieces here are truly breathtaking and will leave you astounded! The amount of detail to attention, and artist consideration that's gone into every single piece is absolutely incredible! If you're looking for some much needed rest and whirlwind exploration into the transcendent, this is the place!!!!

An inspiring and insightful hidden gem
Aug 2018 • Solo
I visited the Wattana Gallery on a solo trip in Chiang Mai after studying in Bangkok. I saw the gallery sign from the road and although he hadn't opened it that day, Wattana greeted me like family and shared some insights about his work. This a lovely place to visit if you want to see how ancient Thai culture and contemporary ideas blend to influence the world we live in today. The gallery is spacious and beautiful, well lit with lots of natural light. It's worth taking time to read and reflect on the meanings behind each masterpiece. The location is outside of the main part of Chiang Mai but its well worth a short trip to the base of the mountainous region. You do have to pay admission but it's not expensive.

Incredible

I had the most incredible experience today exploring Thailand and finding this hidden museum. The actual artist who opened and designed the museum explained some of his paintings to us and it was so moving to hear and understand the paintings from the artists perspective. I would definitely go back

Beauty beyond words
Jul 2018 • Family
This is my third visit to this wonderful art gallery. Wattana is generous with his time and knowledge. While enjoying and appreciating beautiful and thought-provoking art, I learned about the history and tradition of northern Thailand as well as the intricate meaning of Thai textiles. If you are discerning about art you should not miss the opportunity to visit Wattana ‘s gallery.

Amazing!!!
Feb 2018 • Solo
I was there in Feb 2018. It was one of the most amazing private galleries in my life. Mum and I met the artist and we had some nice talk with him. His paintings were more than just amazing. I felt the artist's spirit from all the works that cannot be put into words. I really felt like sharing the feelings with many other art lovers, too. We bought some postcards of his beautiful works and now they are decorating my living room. Some of my visitors asked me more than once who the artist was. This is a must-go place.

The artists' village is also not far from here. You can visit the gallery, wat umong and the village all in one day. But be careful! If you use uber taxi or red bus, tell the driver to take you to wat umong otherwise they will take you to everwhere. The gallery is only 50 metres away from the temple so residents must know where the gallery is. Google map doesn't work well in this area. 2 drivers tooks us to some shops and apartments. Once you get there, you will never regret. It is a truly artistic and fantastic space!
