This museum, housed in a former courthouse, offers an illustrative glimpse of Lanna culture and traditions. It provides an introduction to the distinctive features of northern Thai architecture and religious art. There are extended exhibition on teak decorations and Buddhist statues of different materials. Visitors will be able to understand more about the past grandeur of the Lanna kingdom. Admission is 90 baht.

We discovered this museum on the map and thought it looked interesting. It is quite large but extremely well laid out if you follow the arrows on the floor. It provides a good history of how Chiang Mai came to be established and insights into the culture of the region. Far better than you might expect to find in a provincial city. We combined it with a visit to Wat Chiang Man about a 15 minute walk away for a very pleasant final morning of our holiday.

This was a great introduction to the people and culture of Chiang Mai. The exhibits were interesting and nicely laid out. The three museum complex are next to each other so I'd suggest buy the group ticket. This was my favorite of the three museums but all were very interesting.

Very thoughtfully put together with some insights into life in the historical lives of Lanna people. Stunning mural depicts this. Only minor downside is that it is a quick walk around so you might want to revisit some areas, or visit the cultural centre on the opposite side of the road on the same trip, the latter having more to see and is equally as fascinating

I went with my wife to a few museums that day and by far this was my favorite one. It's by yourself, and no one bothers you. It is laid out well. Lots of ancient Thai weaving exhibits

After a few days wondering about local culture, and having found the level of information in the museum opposite hard to digest, this museum was exactly right. The building is beautiful, and the very well presented displays introduce local culture and artifacts with just the right level of explanation, including reconstructions of Buddhist temples and local houses and a marketplace. Everything is airy, artistic and tasteful, and the cafe in the grounds - Cafe de Museum - is really worth visiting - a trendy coffee house with coffee impeccably and artfully served on local pottery. Go for the three museums pass, it's worth it, but if you only have energy for one museum, make it this one.

Well, laid out. Plenty of information, but not too much. We were there for about 90 minutes and viewed everything at a gentle pace. Easy to get to. Good value for money.

Artefacts are nicely presented and the size of the museum is non too big. A lot of local textiles and other handicrafts are on show.

It is very well done - lots of insight on Buddhism and the symbolism of items that you see in the temples as well as historical day-to-day life. A good history lesson and well presented and set up with good descriptions in English.

They have guides too who want to practice their English so they are offered for free - worth saying yes as they bring it all to life. If I had had time, I would then go round again to take time to read the information.

You can buy a combination ticket (180B) for three museums clustered closely together in Chiang Mai; this one and the City Arts & Cultural Center and the Chiang Mai Historical Center. Of those three, the Lanna museum is by far the best organized and presented.

The nicely arranged displays cover sculptures, mural paintings, ceramics and lacquer ware, textiles, music, worship offerings, and more. The textiles were particularly beautiful. Signage is succinct and informative, in Thai and good English.
