Just pas by, it is the entry to the inner city and nothing more special then that. No idea if this has an historical purpose or other..

This is the most famous and significant bridge of Chiang Mai. It has been reconstructed several times. The first bridge was constructed over the Ping River to connect the East and West banks. It was completed in 1910 using 600 teak logs. An Italian engineer designed it’s arch structure. A fire destroyed it. The second bridge was built in 1923 out of steel. This too did not last beyond 1965. The third and the current bridge was built on this location out of concrete. The area between Nawarat and Iron bridge is where you can see the best fireworks and sky lanterns during the floating lanterns festival.

The flowers look nice and it’s pretty busy so
Don’t try and cross. Nice view down the river though. :)

...but going to review it anyway.

Are you ready?

It's a bridge.

Cars drive on it.

Sometimes I walk across on it.

Actually, why isn't the other bridge listed? The one down river made of iron girders. Now that's quite a nice bridge!

This well constructed bridge is the gateway to the old town. Unlike the Iron Bridge vehicles travel both ways. It has a safe, wide path on both sides of the road which is full of colourful petunia flower boxes every couple of feet. It is also lit up at night with colourful lights.

Any other time of the year and this may feel like any other bridge, however during Loy Krathong and Yi Peng it is something else. Beautifully lit up. It is the most popular place to release sky lanterns from just be careful that they don't collide with the power lines or hanging lights lines. It's also the best place to put the krathongs in the water. Beautiful views.

Although nothing special about the bridge itself it is a useful spot to take photos of the river and central Chiang mai. It provides a reference point for locating yourself in an unfamiliar city - especially as the main tourist information office is at the end of the bridge, on the opposite corner to the Governor's residence. You can also find an attractive foreigner friendly temple here.

While roaming the streets on our rental bike during Loy krathong 2014, we couldn't stop and park fast enough to jump into the crazy and packed to the brim crowd gathered on nawarat bridge for the lantern releasing ceremony all along the whole bridge, view was incredible be dream like, look to the left or right towards the other two bridges on each side as the lanterns released on all 3 bridges merge in the sky, while fire crackers and fire works cracking the dark night randomly throughout the evening, it was magical! Head towards the night market area for drinks and snacks aligned by the streets when you need a break from the crowd. Must see vantage point during Loy krathong!

This bridge connects the out lying Chiang Mai with the area near the night market, between the bridge and that area are many small everyday markets to explore if you have the time.

I walked over either this bridge or another one to get to the other side of the river from the main part of town and then back again over another bridge to Chinatown. There wasn't much to see on the other side of the river except yet another Wat (actually ,a pretty one if you are not already all Wat'd out....) and some old houses/buildings.
