One of the highlights of our month in Thailand. If you can, do this. Non was our guide for the morning. He was brillliant. The very early start - 530 am was worth it. To wander the temple on top of the mountain, only your small group, the monks and the temple dogs, an unforgettable experience. To watch the sunrise, hear the monks chant and to participate in ancient rituals....not to be missed.

We were collected from our hotel by Tu. During the drive up the steep, winding road to the temple he gave us lots of information about the city and the life of a Buddhist monk. He himself had been a monk for 11 years and was very knowledgable about the religion and its history. The temple was all but deserted, we watched the sun rise over the smog caused by the local burning and gave alms to the monks. We were blessed twice. Then we had “breakfast”, it was cooked there and then for us and my allergy to chilli was catered for with no problem. The whole experience was certainly worth the 360 step climb to get there. We then went on to a hidden temple in the jungle. It was quiet, again no crowds, and all around was the sound of birdsong, a very peaceful place ( and the puppies were very cute !!) from here we went to the final temple the city. This one was different as it had purpose built tunnels for the monks to take shelter in as there were no caves in the area. Finally we were dropped at our hotel. I would thoroughly recommend this tour, the guide was knowledgable and we really learnt a lot during the short time we were with him.

We spent two days with Ata--one in Chiang Mai and one in Chiang Rai. He was very knowledgable and friendly. Originally from a mountain tribe and having had experience as a novice monk earlier in his life, he was a wealth of interesting cultural information. Also, Untouched Thailand was very flexible in designing the trip that we wanted. Highly recommended!
