Neighborhood: Silom
Despite the lack of any major tourist attractions, this lively neighborhood is a favorite of many. Whether it's the (somewhat naughty) nightlife of Soi Patpong, the various handicraft night markets or the plethora of dining options that tickle your fancy, a night out in Silom is a must on every itinerary. It's worth a stop during daytime, too: join office workers on a quest to tasty street food during lunch and shop at Silom Complex for a great mix of Thai and international stores. After a day of strolling around the congested sidewalks, a visit to Silom's Lumphini Park, Bangkok's answer to NYC's Central Park, is a welcome change of scenery.

Superb bar. We were there on a thursday. American singer with Asian musicians. Great! And the Chinese Delirium theatre gives the bar a special mood. Feels like your enter Tintin’s Blue Lotus for adults. Drinks are great quality. Professional bartender. Not like the rubbish drinks in the Lebua Skybar which are triple the prices of Maggie Choo’s. A must go in Bangkok!

While the vibe is that you are entering a place you shouldn't be, this is a very high style, underground bar. The decor is that of an underground trading post, complete with the bar behind a banking cage. The drinks were pretty good, but not the best I had in Bangkok. Prices were pretty comparable to other upmarket places. I was concerned about the dress code, but the night I went, wearing nice jeans and a button up were perfectly normal. Some were wearing shorts, although stylish, and others were in suits. I would hesitate to go too casual. The door people were friendly and the staff was moderately attentive, with some being better than others. It was one of the first nights to be back open after all bars were closed for a week, so I did not see any of the performers on swings, but it was pretty easy to get the idea. Although smoking is not allowed inside in Bangkok, they do have some very cool brick bunker style rooms where smoking is allowed. I saw mostly cigars, but I guess that depends on the crowd. This was the top place recommended the most by locals and I would agree that it should be on your list for a visit.

When Maggie Choo's first opened it was a place to behold. The design is beautiful and unique. Definitely worth a visit if you've never seen it before. However, last time I was there I was served the wrong drink and had to convince not only the wait staff, but they brought security over to talk to me as well. In an up-scale cocktail bar that charges premium prices you don't expect to be treated like a common thief. Unfortunately, it's probably a case of a few ruining it for the rest of us. I understand they've probably had to deal with a lot of rotten customers in the time they've been open.

My friend and I visited Maggie Choos as the main night celebration for my 40th birthday trip to Thailand. They had reserved a table weeks in advance and we dressed up for a good night out. When we arrived we were shown straight through and down to the entry, where we paid our entry fee and told them our name for the reservation. It was a gay/drag night, but my friends had checked that as women we were still ok to come- not a huge issue if they had said no- we respect that some nights are geared more towards others and perhaps their preferred clientele weren’t three women :) my friends got the response that we were more than welcome. We were picked up by a host and shown to our table. I say table, I mean a side table next to a couch. With two small stools. The waitress came over to offer us our free drink and we asked her about the table. It was barely big enough to hold two drinks - her response “this is your table”. We then asked for another stool - her response “no”. At this point we were a little stunned. A reservation and confirmation a few days prior to our visit had brought a side table with two stools for three people. I decided at this point to go back to the host, who looked at me with distain when I reiterated that we were three people and had a long standing reservation - their response “that’s the table we have left”. They had told us to be there before 10. We arrived at 21:30 so were not late, dressed very well and very polite to everyone. I said ok, if that’s it then I guess we have to make do but can we at least have a seat. No, you will have to sit on the arm of the couch. We went back, and we decided to sit on the empty couch, convinced they had made a mistake on the reservation. We had a drink and at this point we decided to try and enjoy our night - then the waitress cam over with 5 guys. “ you get up, they reserved, you make room for them”. We were horrified. She was rude and there was place for everyone. Never have I been spoken to like that before and it was the last straw. We stayed for one drink in one of the smoking rooms, and then left. We went somewhere where we were welcome. Disgraceful, rude and a effectively ruined my birthday night out. We didn’t let it in the end, but what a pretentious, ridiculous bunch of idiots. Don’t go there, it’s not worth it.

Popped here as we had heard good things about the place. First off we approached the entrance and the doorman type fella put us to one side. We were the only people there. He asked us if we’d been before and we told I’m we hadn’t, at which point he pointed at a slab of metal with some sort of code of conduct engraved in it, paying particular attention to the ‘no shorts’ and ‘no sandals’ policy. I looked my wife up and down and she was wearing a beautiful ankle length flowing skirt with a simple but complementary top on. Oh, and she was wearing what I would consider to be ‘dress’ sandals. A bit like shoes but showing off a bit more foot in the 33* heat. I, was wearing a short sleeved button down shirt with a smart pair of chino shorts and a pair of deck shoes. I looked smart. The doorman then pulled out from a small cupboard a pair of baggy silk-like trousers and said we could go in if I put them on. I questioned him and told him I’d look daft but he insisted. My wife really wanted to try this place out so I reluctantly put them on over my shorts in front of passers by, which I felt was a little humiliating.
Having been allowed in we went downstairs and were met by a lady who asked if it was just 2 of us. Having established the obvious she directed us to sit in 2x armchairs separated by a small lounge table. The chairs were angled as such that we didn’t really feel comfortable and we were unable to unwind. She handed us a drinks menu and she left us. This is the point we started to notice the bizarre live decoration concept, whereby girls dressed in traditional Chinese dress were dotted around the place, seemingly pretending to involve themselves in parlour games and general oddness. 1 girl was just swinging on a swing, 2 others were playing some sort of card game and another 2 were lay above the bar, semi-hidden by netting and were also playing cards. It was an attempt at a ‘brothel’ theme but for me it was just weird. We then waited for ages for the lady who handed us the menus to come back and take our order - so much so I had to get up and find her to ask if we just simply order at the bar but she insisted she do it!
We sat with our drinks and listened to the live music, which was pretty darn good if I’m being honest. The band that we’re on were talented and played exceptionally well. This was marred by the fact we still felt trapped in the seats we were placed in and the awkward addition of the go-go girls from the 1800’s did nothing to complement the unique aesthetic of the underground cellar-like vault. There wasn’t a truly relaxed atmosphere or vibe to the place, which is what should be ideally achieved in a jazz-bar.
We’d nearly finished our drink and in walked some bloke dressed in Adidas track bottoms, looking like a bag of nails and as though he should be at the local Wetherspoons in Banbury instead! Clearly, he only got in because he wasn’t wearing shorts! I was incensed by this so I got up and told my wife I was leaving, which we both duly did. I was ready to throw the silly trousers back at the doorman but it was a different one, so I chose not to take it out on him. I still felt I had been subject to degradation by being required to put them on and I wish I had never agreed to it - total waste of time!
This place has so much potential to be amazing but it just tries way too hard. The theme doesn’t fit and the ‘live’ models looked bored out of their skull and I got the impression they felt out of place. The service was terrible and I’m shocked at the level of humiliation the staff are willing to put a smartly dressed Englishman through in the melting heat all because he was wearing some nice and inoffensive shorts. It’s 2018 - slacken the noose a little bit, as you’re nowhere near good enough to make those sort of demands!

Now they charge you a fee to get in, with a drink included. I'm okay with that because I normally drink something when I go to a bar. What I'm not okay with is that they don't have a whisky option (my favorite drink) included in the drink menu and they don't let you pay more so you can get a drink that you actually like.
The dancers performance is getting worse too.
The old charisma of Maggie Choo's is gone and it's unfortunate...

We went on a Sunday night, which is gay night. It is a very nice bar/club, good music and nice interior. The crowd is posh and lots of them. It was so crowded, you got pushed constantly, very unpleasant! The drinks are very small but ever so expensive.
They have a drag show on Sunday, which is funny, but also very vulgar.
It was nice to see it once, but that's enough for me.

The staff lack people skills, they cannot make up their mind about the dress code, I saw people turned away wearing tailored shorts and shirts, but people let in in tracksuit bottoms!!!

I went there with friends on a Wednesday evening which is a good evening out in Bangkok.
I've heard good stuff about this place, but when we got there, there were like ten people dancing and the rest of the place was dark and empty.
Nice theme bar, but the ambience was just a regular club with a regular club music. Weak night.
