Old, Abandoned yet still Charming
Oct 2018 • Solo
Being a fan of the film In the Mood for Love by Wong Kar Wai, I made sure to research on the filming locations that I can visit on my travels. Luckily, I had the chance to visit this place when I went to Bangkok last month. The place is old and abandoned but is still reminiscent of the Old Bangkok. Photos are not allowed to be taken but I managed to take a few since there was no guard watching. It is better to take photos from the other side (opposite where I took the photos) though. I suggest that you visit during daytime to see the beauty of the building. Get a cab or book a Grab so that you can directly get to the place.

Abandoned Glory

You can see this masterpiece on the right bank of Chao Phraya river. This group of structures, called Sunlaka Sathan, was where all foreign ships had to report to pay taxes. King Rama V built this Custom House in 1888. It was designed in Neo Renaissance style by an Italian architect. In 1949 this building was converted to a fire station after the custom house was shifted to Khlong Toey. This artistic building has been the backdrop of films like Killing Fields and In Mood For Love. I really loved the classic feel of the sepia facade with turquoise window panes.

Interesting historic bldg on the river. No reason to book a tour. Just walk here and have a look. Security guard was on duty but his main job apoears to be to stay out of the photos..he did not bother me or even approach me. Easy walk from here to/from China Town and other interesting sites. Lots of photo opps around here!

See it before it is refurbished as a hotel/mall

I visited on a Sunday afternoon - there were no security guards on duty. There were "No photo" signs, but only beside the security hut, so there was no problem taking pictures of the Old Customs House building itself. From the wall at the water's edge it is possible to get a shot of the Old Customs House building with the golden dome of the State Tower in the background.

Out of Order

This Place can not be visited by accident. Seem you have to book somewhere a tour or something. Photos are prohibited. From the entrance you will be rejected by security. It is not worthy to walk here without a ticket. No photos, no entry, no good.

Fine Old Building,That Houses the Fire Brigade and families
Feb 2015 • Solo
The Old Custom's House was incorporated on a half day, city bike tour "Siam Boran" i completed with Follow me bike tours,(See separate review). Our tour guide explained some of the history of the building, and the timber work and staircase was beautiful and would have been magnificent in "It's Day". The Upper floors are occupied by The Local Fire Brigade Crew and their families. I would not go out of my way to visit, but found it very interesting as part of the tour.

Derelict Old Customs House Building
Feb 2015 • Solo
The Old Customs House was built in the 1890s and provided customs services to foreign merchants who came to trade in the country. Unfortunately this colonial style building has fallen into disrepair and is apparently occupied by the families of the Bang Rak Fire Brigade. Said to be up for restoration and possible conversion to a hotel although I understand the fire brigade are reluctant to move out!

Can be seen from the outside only. For lovers of old buildings.

Approach from Saphan Taksin sky train station by tuk tuk or a 20 minute walk. Alternatively by boat to Oriental Pier at the end of soi 34.
