First of all, though they were very nice, the staff was slower than slow. It took them just over an hour to get 5 of us registered for a one-day tour to Ayutthaya. The guide picked us up at our hotel at the appointed time. The van was OK, but old and showing wear. Our guide was a nice enough guy, but a major disappointment. His English was rather rudimentary. He started out OK, giving us some native fruits we’d never seen before to snack on and educating us on proper greetings in Thailand, but then he deteriorated rapidly. He slept most of the way both to and from Ayutthaya. He never asked about our interests or what we wanted to see – and this was a private tour, not a group tour. He didn't offer any historical, political, religious or cultural information. If we wanted to know something we had to ask him, and then he wasn’t always sure of an answer, often admittedly guessing or making it up. My guidebook was more helpful than he was. He walked either slower than slow or at breakneck speed. The agency said we had to buy tickets to 2 venues on the tour, but it turned out to be 5 – including a cheesy and extremely overpriced boat ride at the floating market, which was a lot like It’s a Small World thing at Disney – all we were missing was the music. He also pressured us quite a bit to ride the elephants there, which we were not interested in. Because of the time spent here, we didn’t have time to see the last temple, which was really annoying. He kept taking pictures of us on his own camera - kind of creepy. He was undoubtedly the worst guide we’ve ever had. We wouldn't use this agency again.
