The area
Address
Neighborhood: Sukhumvit
With a mix of shopping malls, hip bars and food stalls lining both sides of Thailand’s longest road, you’ll rarely encounter a dull moment along Sukhumvit. While the main road itself doesn't offer a lot in terms of entertainment, it's the adjoining 'sois' (alleys) where the magic happens. Popular spots are soi 11 for a lively night out, soi 4 for naughty nightlife and soi 21 for world-class shopping at Terminal 21. It's hard to cover everything this area has to offer in on day, so be sure to take your time. Sukhumvit is heavily congested with traffic during day and night, so getting from A to B is most convenient using the BTS Skytrain right above it.
How to get there
  • Asok • 4 min walk
  • Sukhumvit • 5 min walk

Aloha Bar, Sukhumvit soi 22 Bangkok, great place for a starter
Aug 2014 • Solo
Back in April 2013 I visited Bangkok for some much needed R&R away from my job as a youth sports manager in Saudi Arabia. My first port of call after stepping out of my hotel in the Sukhumvit area of the city (chosen for its world class nightlife) was Aloha Bar on Soi 22. I had booked 2 nights in BKK before my planned trip down to Phuket to visit friends who now live I Thailand.

Unlike 99.9% of the bars in the area Aloha was hassle free, un assuming and cool (as oppose to brash and hectic - not that there's anything wrong with the latter). I was only supposed to have a chilled, post flight beer and ended up staying all night on a jet lag lash, which wasn't unsurprising if I'm being honest with myself :).

The reason being was that as Bangkok bars go (and I know them well) its pretty unique in as much as the girls are lovely (standard) but don't hassle you (not standard) and can speak good english .... you're not surrounded by madness - but there's plenty there if that's what you're after - you can sit and chill with friends and family and enjoy the sights of the best nightlife city in Asia - or throw yourself into it with two feet. Its all there in microcosm with no pressure - you can do everything or nothing and either way have a great time. Its also in a perfect location to move on to the more famous/infamous bars and clubs close by.

There's sport on TV, customers choice of music - great darts board - beautiful girls and inexpensive, cold beer - you cant really ask for more than that.

My first experience of the place was as a solo traveller which worked out well as the main clientele are groups of travellers looking for a good starting point for a night of shenanigans and knowledgeable and social expats who live on the Soi. So you can easily slip into laid back conversation with good people.

Since then I've been back to Thailand 6 times and on each occasion I've been back to Aloha....

Go try it out!
