A famous historical ordinary market. Nowadays, it becomes a big wholesale dried seafood market.

In the afternoon, you should try a quick-lunch at some little local restaurant & cafe.

Riverside restaurants and hotels around this market offer a great view of Wat Arun, especially at the sunset. Recommending to make a reservation for riverside restaurants in the first place. Trust me, you will certainly have a breathtaking evening view.

These are the riverside restaurants to enjoy the splendid view of Wat Arun.

1. Eat Sight Story
2. The Deck by Arun Residence
3. Riva Arun
4. Sala Rattanakosin

Tha Tian Market is an active, salted fish and processed marine products market found behind Wat Pho, along the Chao Phraya River. It is an interesting market that can be conveniently visited after you have seen Wat Pho.

Historically, there has been a marketplace at this location since the reign of King Rama I. At that time, the Tha Tian market was mostly a floating market in a household boating community. However, by the time of King Rama V's reign, shophouses were ordered to be built to better sustain and modernise the Tha Tian marketplace.

The new land based market was more of a traditional wet market scene, compared to what you see today. At that time, you were more likely to find fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and other daily use food produce. However, in time, this particular market went into decline. The businesses that were able to carve out a living and survive dealt in dried and salted seafood products. This is mostly what you see today at the historic Tha Tian Markets.

Today, you will see a host of small retail vendors selling salted fish, various dried seafood, curry pastes, spices and many exotic items. There are also foods being prepared for wholesale at the Tian Markets, offering a hint of insight into this industry trade in Bangkok.

The Tha Tian Market is also conveniently located in a roofed area, built during the reign of King Rama V. This provides cover from the rain, which is nice. Mind you, the floor can become very wet and the odours are strong here due to the contents being sold.

In the end, the Tha Tian Market is an interesting place to poke your head around if you have not seen many dried seafood like markets before. You can spend 10-15 minutes here and then make your way over to Wat Arun via the Tha Tian Pier found at the end of the market. Rides across the Chao Phraya are just 3 Baht per person.

Not as much of a market as I was expecting and more of a fishy visit to purchase dry fish, seafood or spend some time at a cafe. There are some interesting period buildings

Immediately after you enter the Tha Tien Market is a tea cart. I saw the lady make Thai tea by placing tea leaves into a pot then pour the tea in the pot back and forth through a strainer. She then pour the tea into a bag for a local Thai patron. When I order the same tea, we watch attentively as she performed the same task. It was a distraction. There was another lady behind her preparing OUR tea. The Thai tea was diluted without any tea flavor.

OK, everyone, do not hail a taxi and go out to this market. It is not worth it and not what you are looking for. If you take the boat up to The Grand Palace or Wat Po, you will get off at Tha Tien Pier and walk right thru this market, which consist of lots of cooked and uncooked food, most of which is for locals. Unless you feel like sitting in 100F degree heat to chow down on a bowl of noodles that you can get in thousands of places all over the city. So have a look see as you pass thru on your way to The Grand Palace and write it off your bucket list.

I happened upon this market today when I took the riverboat crossing (4 baht) from Wat Arun to Wat Pho.

The market is on the Tha Tien Pier and you have to walk through it to get out of the pier and to the Grand Palace/Wat Pho (temple of the reclining Buddha) etc.

It really is a nice little market which has shops selling all sorts of weird and wonderful things. When you get to the concrete stairs at the end, look to your right and you’ll see a stall tucked into the corner which does the most amazing smoothies!

Good for a brief walk through and a decent smoothie!

We are 8 cruise ship passengers on our 1st day of our tour with “Bangkok Metropolis Tours by Thanaporn “Jean” Sungnoi”. Having just experienced Wat Pho we are walking through the local market to find a reasonable businessman lunch the wives will accept at a price that pleases mature husbands wallets. Also I enjoy seeing the faces of the hawkers hoping we will buy their wares and the wives faces of wonder as to who would buy such things. Yes there is the danger the wives will find some distinctive gift she has to buy. But the prices here are reasonable even for tourists. The beheaded fish, squid on a stick, fish balls, and meat balls watered our mouth as the wives looked at the Spring Rolls 20 Baht ($0.57) and Fried Shrimp on a stick 30 Baht ($0.86). We all agreed on a restaurant on the water front of the Chao Phraya River at less than 200 Baht each. I asked for the business card of the restaurant and was told they don’t do such things so I cannot report on this exact restaurant. This is an excellent stop before catching the local ferry.

This market is directly on the right hand side after you disembark the Chao Praya ferry. A warren of covered stalls selling mostly to the local populace. It was through this market I preferred to walk to my hotel since it was covered and out of the glaring sun. Very charming little Chinese temple in the far left corner.
