It is true that Day Tours Bangkok is not going to be the cheapest tour possible but that is what you will get when booking through outside agencies - that is just normal commercial activities. Unless you are willing (and able) to book everything directly and access all of the locations on your own without Thai assistance, expect to pay a fee. I My husband and I booked a private tour of the Erawan Falls, Death Railway, JEATH War Museum, and POW Cemetary the evening before the actual tour. We communicated via whatsapp with the Day Tours representative who was very responsive and helpful. We asked tons of questions and the representative was very patient and answered each question without any indication of impatience. While the price was indeed more expensive than other group tour offers, the price for the private tour was reasonable and in fact lower than a number of other companies that we looked into. We paid THB 8,000 for a private driver and guide and while it was double the price of what a group tour would have been, the fact that we were able to manage our own schedules and have a say in where we wanted to spend how much time where was worth it. Most day trips of this kind have a pick-up time of 6:30am and you are back at your hotel by 7pm. We were able to have a pick-up time of 7:30am and returned back to our hotel by 9pm. The extra hour in the morning allowed us to have breakfast at the hotel and have a good start to the day. Our driver was very sweet and came into breakfast to find us. We then had our own air conditioned mini-van where we spent the next 2.5 hours to get to the Cemetery. Upon arrival, our tour guide Ricky greeted us and gave us a tour of the Cemetery and then let us wander. Thereafter, he came and got us and we drove to the start of the Death Railway. We were extremely happy that we had a tour guide who had purchased tickets with advanced seating (choosing ideal seats for the best view) and who directed us to where to wait for the train, get on, and then get off at the right stop. Everything is quite confusing with the number of tourists and locals scrambling for seats and getting off from the previous destination. At the end of the train ride (approximately 1 hour), we stopped at a restaurant for a "local lunch". The lunch was not the best but quite honestly, nothing to be surprised of given these types of tour. It was a typical buffet catered to mass groups and the "local" food was sub par and drinks were not included. The meal, however, was not the purpose of the trip so it was fine. There were plenty of vendors at the Death Railway and Erawan Falls selling local street food for anyone who was still hungry or wanted authentic local cuisine. After lunch we went on to the Erawan Falls, which is beautiful and a delight. There are 7 different levels in the waterfalls but unfortunately we only made it to the 3rd level (mainly given the heat and my being ridiculously out of shape). The falls at each level that we saw were gorgeous and there were so many fish in the clear, green waters that would nibble on you when you entered the water (like the fish massages). After a couple of hours, it was time to head back to Thanburi (sp?) where we visited the JEATH Death Museum. The museum was underwhelming at best but quite honestly, the real experience was the Death Railway and the Waterfalls. Overall, one of the best day trips I have been on. Ricky and our driver were very attentive and without their assistance, we would have been a bit lost and it would have taken far too much time for us to navigate around the area and ensure we were able to truly enjoy the sights. The additional costs of this private tour was completely worthwhile.

Complain no.1 : Tour bus is late Complain no.2 : Tour guide’s communication skill is bad, i could have come on my own instead and cheaper. There were no guide on the Area of interest that were visited, it was self exploration. No proper instructions on when/ what the bus is leaving for next destination. No introduction of her name even. Complain no.3 : change of itinerary on the very day of tour, without notifying me at all, only to find out on the day itself. Very disappointed.

Some have said the tour is basically an accompanied taxi ride and to be honest myself and my son was happy with this, it’s a long trip with some stops but if traveling with youngsters some entertainment might be required. The minibus had aircon and was in good condition and although the driver had a TV playing on his dash I/we did not feel the drive was unsafe, it’s not unusual to see !! However the benefit of this type of trip is that you were not shuffled from one location to the other, as an example at the falls you are shown where to go and where to meet afterwards and that was fine. The falls are beautiful, first and foremost I suggest trainers to hike to the upper falls but it’s worth the walk as you get hot and sweaty then you can plunge into the water and the falls so swim gear and towels. Post falls there was a nice lunch included then we went to the Elephants, this is a hot topic at the moment and I did hours of searching to find an ethical tour. I won't say I hit it right with this tour as my first impression was the elephants were chained in the paddock but I then thought horses/bridles etc. Once on board (Mannie) we set off, the rider jumped off and moved my son to where he sat, behind Mannie's head and as we rode around the area we came across a very large enclosure and it became apparent that this is where the elephants are let out to pasture. Seeing this I felt a bit better as they could roam free and there was plenty of food about but I felt even better when Mannie decided he had had enough for the day and wanted to stay in the area, off he strolled with us on board, some waving and shouting by the trainer persuaded him back but it struck me the elephant was not ruled by fear. That's said I appreciate there are conflicting views on riding elephant, the ones we saw seemed to be well treated but there is a part of me that feels maybe just seeing them in the wild is better. Please don’t get me wrong we thoroughly enjoyed the experience, the ride and the swim and being close to these wonderful animals was truly memorable but not all Elephant camps are the same hence my dilemma if I would do it again. In summary its personal choice, the tour company met and exceeded my requirements, if you are of the same mind set as myself and my 13 year old son then it will suit you, it was well priced, they were efficient, courteous and very helpful, I aim to return to Bangkok and I’ll certainly use this company for other tours.

We booked the erawan waterfall and elephant ride day tour. I was quite apprehensive after reading the horrible reviews (after we had already booked). But overall we had a fantastic time. We knew it was a long trek out there (3 hours drive) so we were prepared for that. We were picked up from our hotel (driver was 20 min late) and driven to khaosan road where we picked up a few more people. The minivan was serviceable and had aircon so i was pretty happy. We werent full which was good because there really wasnt enough room when you took into account our bags. The falls were gorgeous and very cooling which was good because it was a hot day. We only went to the level 5 falls because we wanted a fair bit of time relaxing in the water. Its a fair trek up to 7 and they are serious when they say its about a 2 hour round trip. The fish do nibble at you if you stay too still in the water and they are much bigger than those in a fish spa so not as pleasant. Its worth going up a bit as most people swam in the level 1-3 falls and they were quite crowded. Lunch was a simple thai meal, tasty and filling and cold water and fruit provided. (There was a limited menu to choose from). The elephant ride was fun and they were very accommodating for picture taking. My favourite part all day was bathing with the elephants, where you get to sit on them in the water and they spray you over and over with water. Soooo fun! A quick stop at the river kwai bridge for some pictures and a walk across on the way home. The tour guide/driver were polite but their involvement was limited, and sometimes communication was not there so there was confusion as to what was happening. This was not a tour where we followed a talking guide who spouted information for 3 hours straight. They left us to explore on our own at the waterfalls. But i was quite happy with that structure which allowed us to choose what to do and our own pace. Considering the price we paid, definitely worth it, and we had a great time!
